Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread
Neomaxizoomdweebie replied to LeftWinger's topic in General
If the Canucks are rebuilding and they have the 7th pick (especially they'll want Wahlstrom, Tkachuk, or Zadina with the Twins retiring) they wouldn't want to give up that pick without a serious return. It would take an overpayment. The Wings pick next year is an unknown. They could have picked 8th this year. I don't think they'll be worse next year. Larkin, Mantha, Svech, Bert, and Rass (if he's on the team) will all be better next year. Assuming Holland continues to roster 4 legit top 4 D, I don't think the D will be any worse. Same goaltending. The Hawks are picking 8th this year. Chances are they will finish higher next year and a lottery pick will be out of reach. They will want a good return for their pick this year. You would be giving up an unknown 1st round pick next year to move up and draft a player who would probably go top 4 or 5 in any other draft. You are basically just drafting next years pick this year and gambling that next years wouldn't be better. You are throwing in a 20 something pick for the cost of moving up, and a pending UFA roster player (who I think the Hawks would be interested in) as the "collateral" so to speak. It may be a steep price to pay, but I do think it would take that much. -

I believe he misses game 1 in the next round too. Not smart by any means, but he's just a kid, so not such a big deal IMO. I mean, its not like he was driving an SUV with a .30 blood alcohol level in a Teletubby costume! -

If it was the Hawks pick, it would take Vegas' pick this year, our first next year and Nyquist. If it was Vancouver replace Nyquist with Cholowski and add another pick. Vancouver's asking price would be too high, and although I would consider Chicagos, all of the F I would be interested on would be gone. -
Its a contact sport. There are always kids with past concussions being drafted (some diagnosed, some not). Its worthy of consideration, but I wouldn't call Boqvist "damaged goods".

Which is weird considering they were once known for it. Yzerman, Shanny, McCarty, Maltby, Verbeek, Kocur, LaPointe, Whitney, Lang Sheppard, Hull, and Jason Williams in addition to Samuelsson. Holland does seem to not like them tho. -

Good prospect news: Givani Smith has 18 points in 18 playoff games. Larsson named USHL goalie of the year. -
Tatar traded to Golden Knights for 2018 1st, 2019 2nd & 2021 3rd

I knew I read it somewhere. Here's the article: https://www.thoughtco.com/players-names-on-the-stanley-cup-2779441 Today, players appearing in 41 regular-season games for the championship team or in one Stanley Cup final game for that team have their names engraved on the Cup. The NHL makes exceptions for players who do not meet the standard because of injury or other extenuating circumstances. Besides eligible players, the names of the coaches, management, and staff of the winning team are also engraved on the Cup. Only one name has been added to the Cup against the rules over the years. When the Edmonton Oilers won their first championship in 1984, owner Peter Pocklington included his father's name, Basil Pocklington, among the names engraved. It was later scratched out with a series of Xs. I don't think that having a 5 million dollar salary would count as an extenuating circumstance. That said, if Vegas does make the Finals (which I don't think they will), I'm sure he would be used for at least one of those games, so its probably a moot point. -

Doesn't he have to play at least one game in the Finals to get his name on the Cup tho? -

In some ways, I almost wish that we did drop back to 8th. That way there would only be one of Dahlin,Svech,Zadina Tkachuk, Wahlstrom, Boqvist, Hughes and Bouchard left for Holland to take and I wouldn't have to listen to all of the "Holland took the wrong player" bickering for the next 10-15 years. -

That would be a mistake IMO. We should go D. But even if all of Boqvist, Bouchard, and Hughes are taken, that would mean Zadina is still available and would be a better choice. I have a feeling that Arizona takes Tkachuk anyway. My 1-10 Mock Draft: Buffalo: Dahlin Carolina: Svechikov Montreal: Zadina Ottawa: Boqvist Arizona: Tkachuk That leaves either Hughes or Bouchard for Detroit at 6. I would prefer Bouchard of the 2, but the Michigan connection may be too strong for Holland. Vancouver: Wahlstrom Chicago: Hughes/Bouchard Rangers: Dobson Oilers: Ty Smith -
No. They'll take him with the hopes that they have Karlsson's replacement so they can trade him before he hits free agency.

That's the problem with him tho. I know scoring forwards are streaky at times, but I want a guy who can be counted on when it matters if he's a permanent fixture in my top 6. Nyquist is the same way which made Tatar redundant. trading him was a good move. -
Watch what Ottawa does. If Montreal takes Zadina, I think they go with Boqvist hoping he's a Karlsson clone.

Wings Sign Free Agent Goalie Matej Machovsky

History repeating itself? Things just never seem to turn out well for Spartans. -
Maybe they'll turn into a decent NHL pairing and we can refer to them as the "Czech Mates".

For some reason there are some here who think that trading AA for anyone or for any reason is the opposite of a rebuild and even mentioning it means you live in 2008. He's a sort of a new Jurco in the sense that people see a few highlights and think he's the next Fedorov. He is not. He's a middle 6 winger with speed who seems unwilling or unable to develop into a 2 way player. Obviously trading him in a package for a young defenseman would be a good move as long as we don't sell short. I think that Vegas' pick and AA would fetch a good return and should be considered.

Yes. Which is why a lot of mock drafts have the Wings picking him. Its a thing. I would be happy with either. I prefer them over Hughes cuz they're both RH. Something lacking on our D at this time. If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one, I guess I would go Boqvist. I just don't think he'll be there unless Ottawa goes F with their pick. -

Yeah it's pretty easy to win Stanley Cups when you're the only team who's allowed to have 7 players on the ice. -

From all of the mock drafts I am seeing, it's wide open after #2. The most popular pick for us is Quinn Hughes, followed by Bouchard. I've posted more reputable ones here: https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2018/4/29/17298954/red-wings-pick-6th-overall-in-the-2018-nhl-draft-mock-draft-quinn-hughes-rasmus-dahlin-prospects Quinn Hughes https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2772305-nhl-mock-draft-2018-initial-post-lottery-predictions Oliver Walstrom https://www.tsn.ca/tsn-hockey-mock-draft-post-lottery-edition-1.1071168 Evan Bouchard -

#6 is basically #3. Dahlin and Svech will be gone. We are guaranteed one of Boqvist, Hughes, Bouchard, Zadina, or Tkachuk. Nothing to complain about here. Pretty sure we go D. -
