There was talk that the Wings would have to move the Prospect Tournament and Training Camp somewhere else if the remodel wasn't completed. That would be a shame as having it there in such a small, quaint atmosphere, getting that close to the players, just wouldn't be the same if it was held at LCA. It is a truly a unique experience. Imagine the Wings playing a scrimmage game at your local indoor ice rink, and bumping into and taking pictures with guys like Kris Draper, Chris Chelios, and Ken Daniels walking around. That's what it's like there. Even the worst seats are only feet from the ice surface, and you not only get to see all of the roster players (no healthy scratches) you also get to see all of the prospects. Luckily, it appears that arena is moving forward with the renovations, which would make sense considering the city generates far more than $200K each year from the Wings being there. And the Wings have agreed to stay there for at least the next 5 years if the renovations are made. This is good news as I plan on attending both the Prospect Tournament and Training Camp this year, and maybe take in some Upper Peninsula while I'm up there. As of right now our D going into next year is: DD, Daley, Ericsson, Kronwall, Jensen, XO, Hicketts Cholowski and Hronek are absolute long shots. I'm looking at 19-20 for them. That leaves potentially one spot open if you play Wit at F, and carry 8 D. We'll know before free agency starts if we have Dahlin. If so, he's your 8th D. No more additions. If we don't get Dahlin, but draft another D, you're looking at 1-2 years before they make the roster. This is where I consider signing Mike Green to a 2 year deal. 2018-19 D Roster: DD-Green, TD-E, Kronner-Hicketts, XO-Jensen Kronwall, Jensen and XO are gone after next season. Bring up Hronek and Cholowski. Ericsson, Daley, and Green would be up after 19-20. I agree 100%. Tkachuk is also listed as a slash too. He won't be a center at the NHL level. The highest ranked "true" Center is Veleno. Whenever I See C/LW or C/RW I always see that as the equivalent of "padding a resume". Svech Sr. was listed as a C/LW when he was drafted IIRC, but i don't think there's much argument about him being a winger at the NHL level. I think if it Dahlin and Svech are gone, I draft one of the D, then I look to trade up into the teens and draft Veleno if I can get him. The problem with that scenario is they'll probably want an early second back in the trade. I guess my point is, unless it's Svechnikov, there are too many good young D to draft a winger with the first pick.

Hopefully Rass playing wing in Tri City isn't anything to be concerned about.

In the case of this team/roster it is. Hicketts is not, and probably never will be, a top 4D. Throwing him into a role that he isn't suited for (top 4) IS "throwing him into the deep end". Which is why, as has already been said, he is being blocked by other bottom pair D (XO and Jensen), not Daley. If we get Dahlin, we put him on the top pair and don't re-sign Green. Trade/waive XO to bring in Hicketts or go with 8 D. Simple. The rest of these guys won't be ready for the NHL next year. If any of them are going to be future top pair defensemen, than they need minutes, lots of them. The best way to do that is by playing them 20 minutes a game in GR. Just because a guy is "NHL ready", doesn't make him ready for the role he will play there. Again, throwing any one of them into big defensive responsibilities right away in the NHL would be a mistake. Bringing them up to play sparingly won't really help either. You keep guys like that developing in GR until they are absolutely ready..than you bring them up onto your 2nd pair and play them with say...IDK...someone like...DALEY! And by the time ALL of the kids are ready, all of those horrible geriatric contracts will be off the roster anyway. The idea that this team will suddenly have all Hronek, Cholowski, Saarajarvi, 2018 D pick, all up at once is not realistic. You can't change out your D corp that drastically. As guys like E, Kronner, Green, and Daley leave, you replace them with newer blood. This happens over multiple seasons, not all at once. It's how the NHL works. We aren't reinventing the wheel here.

Are you sure? I have seen him listed mostly as a RW, occasionally as a C/RW. If he isn't a full time C at the lower levels, I don't think he'll play C at the NHL level. Which is why I'm not high on him. I'm only looking at Svech, Zadina, Tkachuk if I am looking at a forward in the top 10. If I need a Center, I trade down and pick Veleno.
