  1. That's why they made the Finals. The rest of that team was unremarkable. I don't think I can even name one player from it. Same with the Canes. That Cup was all Cam Ward.

Holland and Blashill expected to return

There is only 1 NHL G on your list. Larsson and Truz may be one day, but Coreau and McCollum don't belong anywhere near an NHL ice surface. As for Machovsky, I've only ever seen him at Training Camp. Didn't really impress me at all. I don't see him ever being anything more than a mediocre AHL goalie. The smart course would be to sign a veteran backup this summer. And roll with Howard until the TDL.

Sedin Twins Calling it a Career After Season

Imagine what Z's numbers would look like if not for the multiple back injuries. I was basing him passing Daniel on the premise that he plays at least 2 more years. After the season is over, he needs 85 points to pass him. He's put up 50 so far this year. he could do 45 next season and 40 the following year and still pass Daniel Sedin even if he didn't play the last year of his contract. If he played his final year, he would only need 31 more points to pass Henrik. Definitely possible. Yep. What good are defensemen if they aren't playing offense?

Holland and Blashill expected to return

Yes. That would be wise. The WIngs will have a high enough pick, that unless KH goes off the reservation, they will get a really good player. Can't really mess that first one up. I disagree about stocking up on goalies. I wouldn't even use a pick on one until at least the 4th round. There are too many decent G available in free agency every year to waste a pick on drafting one.

    Should any of #91, #13, #40, #30 be retired? Poll/Discussion

Oops. My apologies. I know better. I meant Sergey Federov.

Gotta disagree with ya here. I agree with you on Feds. He does have the most NHL points of any other Russian player. Bure is 11th tho. I realize injuries cut his career short, but in 702 games his P/GP is 1.11 and his +/- is 42. In 782 games, Malkin's P/GP is 1.187 (the highest of any Russian including Federov) and his +/- is 90 (8th vs. Bure's 27th). Not that those are the best stats to determine offense or defense, but based on those numbers, Malkin is a better player IMO. My top 5 NHL Russians would be: 1. Federov 2. Datsyuk 3. Ovechkin 4. Malkin 5. Bure

Holland and Blashill expected to return

It would probably be Holland as Vice President at that point. And I don't think Yzerman would fail. Without the whole "streak" thing anymore, he could pretty much do what he did in Tampa.
  8. Admittedly, I did allow bias to affect my rankings a little bit. You definitely could rank the 01 Avs higher (not that I want to) and I suppose you could switch the 03 Devils and 07 Ducks (although they were really good too). I hate the Pens, but that 09 Wings team they beat was loaded. It was not an easy thing to do to make the Cup Finals 2 years in a row and beat that team. That's why I ranked them higher.

  10. Yes. What a dumb kid for choosing a team where he is going to get very limited minutes on the third pair, learning from a guy who may not even be there after next season, on a team who may not even make the playoffs. It's not like he could have gone almost anywhere and gotten more ice time/experience and made more money that way. Oh, wait....Yes he could!

Holland and Blashill expected to return

This. We've seen "No Cap" Holland be successful. We've seen "Hold on to the Streak" Holland fail. What we haven't seen yet is "Rebuild" Holland. Many seem to assume he will fail based on the second. It seems to me that replacing him with anyone else at this point wouldn't be anymore of a guarantee of success than giving "Rebuild" Holland a chance to see what he can do.

    Tatar traded to Golden Knights for 2018 1st, 2019 2nd & 2021 3rd

He is the 2nd winningest Coach in NHL history, but until he was handed a team full of tank job high end draft picks, he hadn't had much success in the playoffs. Although I would prefer him over Blashill, I think he would have a hard time living up to expectations.
  14. Not to speak for GMR, but those teams listed in order from best to worst would be: 1. 02 Wings 2.08 Wings 3. 09 Pens 4. 01 Avs 5. 00 Devils 6. 07 Ducks 7. 03 Devils 8. 04 Lightning 9. 06 Canes You could make an argument for swapping 3 and 4, and rearranging 5 thru 7, but the Lightning and Canes were by far the weakest winners of that decade IMO. There were much better teams in 04 and 06 who choked, and both of them beat overachieving teams who ran out of steam in the Finals.

    Tatar traded to Golden Knights for 2018 1st, 2019 2nd & 2021 3rd

Based on recent headlines, it's possible Q could be available sooner rather than later. Joel Quenneville more teacher than coach lately as he awaits his Blackhawks fate On The Beat: Is Joel Quenneville still the right coach for the Blackhawks? Blackhawks rumors 2018: Joel Quenneville ‘could be in trouble’ in Chicago?

GDT Detroit V. Ottawa; "Tank" Battle!

  19. Ok. If that is true, than 43rd highest means he's being paid like a #2, which he clearly isn't talent-wise. Although there are probably some guys below DD that are top pair guys who are being paid less because they are on entry level deals, so that kinda skews things a little bit. I tried comparing his salary to other D with similar experience, TOI and ages, but that's just too much work. If he is being paid top pair money, than he shouldn't be. But as ridiculous as some D contracts have been since DK signed his, I just don't think that 5 MIL is that much of an overpayment for a 2nd pair D anymore.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

While I preferred Howard over Mrazek, and I think he's a better goalie than people give him credit for, I am not opposed to trading him next year. I thought trading Mrazek first was the right thing to do. Sign a decent replacement this summer, and then trade Howard next season, assuming it's for a decent return. I think Holland has played this one well so far. In fact, I think the post-streak Holland has done pretty well, which is why I am not opposed to bringing him back.

And Blashill. Think of this team as a puzzle of suck. Holland and Blashill are just corner pieces.

    Goligoski Snipe Goal

Makes sense. I guess the rule is designed to keep players from scoring without using a stick.
  23. My bad. I meant to quote Leftwinger since he posted it. The kid is dumb tho. If you have a choice to go anywhere, you go to the team that gives you the most most ice time. Going to LA as a 3rd pairing means a lot less money come contract negotiation time than going to a team like the Wings and getting 2nd pair minutes. I get wanting to go to a winner, but you can do that later after you've earned a lot more money. LA isn't really even in the top 5 for Cup contenders anyway IMO. More Trevors to go with Daley. So after we trade for Trevor Lewis, Trevor Van Riemsdyk, and Trevor Smith, we're getting a cup for sure.

    Wings Recall Hicketts

First bold: 5th round pick was the rumor. 2nd Bold: He's not "valuable". He's just worth more than a 5th (If that is in fact what was offered.) Obviously a 2nd was reaching for the sky, but I would have traded him for a 3rd. As to your 2nd paragraph, I mostly agree. However, I would ask: Would you not agree that there are situations where having a RH takes faceoffs is a benefit. I am not saying that it has to be Glendening, but if you not him then who? Is that one reason alone enough to keep him? No. But its one more reason not to undersell. The next 2 years may be deep drafts, but I don't think they're that deep that a 5th rounder amounts to anything. Thanks. You kinda summed up in one paragraph what took me 2 long-winded posts to say.

This is exactly why I don't hate Bettman either. And why he still has a job.
