His legs always keep moving.  Thats a great trait of his.

Good hands. Prefers the off wing. People are comparing him to Holmstrom with better hands, but Groot is a perimeter player, not a net front guy. Needs to develop more of a mean streak.

I suspect he will play 3rd line RW.

yah, i have ZERO idea what #7 thru #16 are actually worth.  #2 i have an idea = young impact player + 1st rnd pick + 2nd rnd pick.

It would probably require a multiple team deal with a team between us and them. MTL and NJ wont move down to #8. They could trade down to 3-5 range, but it would require a team in that range to be willing to trade down to 8.

New Jersey is open to trading second overall.  What would it take on top of bertuzzi and Zadina to get it?

    #8

Extend Bert for like 3 years then Bert for 2OA straight up. Devils wanna compete now. Give them Bert's prime years for the pick. If they don't like it, fine. They can just suck again.

    Never ever gonna happen.

    imagine:

    Bert to NJD for #2

    Suter + 2023 2nd + 2024 1st for #7.

    Juolevi + Walman + 2022 2nd + 2024 2nd for #9.

    2,7,8,9.

Yzerman could do some serious damage.

Not with those offers. He would get hung up on.

Since when do we care about the Devils?

New Jersey will be in cap hell in a few years. Arent the top 3 ineligible for another top 3 pick for the next few years now? No matter where they finish?

Yzerman will get a stud at 8, or if his guy is more of a 12-15 pick, he'll trade back. Either way he's going to pick one of the best players in the draft.

Also, we didn't drop, can't be mad at the NHL. Be mad at the Red Wings for picking up useless unneeded points when it was clear the playoffs were out of the picture.

    Next up, new coaching staff!

Wings weren't going to get in the top 2 or 3 even without those "useless, unneeded points".

  5. 1 hour ago, LeftWinger said:

Ya, but within 3-5 years they won't be able to afford to pay all the higher end talent.

Yzerman should call Montreal right now. Offer Bertuzzi, Hronek, the 8th and next years 1st unprotected for the #1 OA and take Weber's salary off their hands.

Montreal is not trading that pick.

Even when Lidstrom did play with Rafalski, which wasn't all the time. It was because we had a killer 2nd pairing in Kronwall and Stuart. That was arguably the best 2nd pairing in the league at that time.

Exactly. Which is why you could pair Lids and Rafalski. You don't play Seider and Edvinsson together unless you have that kind of 2nd pair behind it. We don't.

Your way to hung up on Chelios not playing with Lidstrom and dismissing all the other greats that he played with throughout his career. Maybe Lids and Cheli just didnt click. Who knows. As good as Cheli was here its not like he was the elite 60-70pt d that played in Montreal and Chicago. His best season in Detroit he didnt top 40pts.

What does before Lidstrom had been fully developed have to do with anything? Seider and Edvinsson arent fully developed either. Lidstrom and Coffey def were the top 2 d on those teams. Same with Lidstrom and Murphy and Lidstrom and Schneider and Lidstrom and Rafalski.

There arent even 3rd pair d on this team its Seider and a bunch of replacement level AHL d. Im not against splitting up Ed-Mo but no one should be against at least trying them together. Seider is the youngest rhd on the team but theres no one else Id rather Edvinsson learn from and lean on to start his NHL career.

What greats? Dandenault? Bykov? Markov? Olausson? Lidstrom played most of his career with good, but not elite defenseman. That's my point. There is no need to play 2 D of that caliber together.

    1 hour ago, bIueadams said:

But if Eddog is Hedman and Seider is Pronger you don't play them together. You split them to cover 50 minutes of ice time instead of 25.

    Exactly.

Only reason I bring back Stephens is because I feel bad we spent a pick on him. He can go unqualified or waived and I wouldn't care. Same goes for Zadina.

Juolevi is probably done in the NHL. Walman has an insanely good slap shot which is dope. But again, I won't care much if he departs from us. His spot can be filled with better choices.

Mitchell is a poor mans Glendening. He isnt anything special but gives the team a decent 4th line and RH center option.

I'll be pretty disappointed if more than one of Staal, Walman or Juolevi is brought back

Walman will probably be back. He is fine as a 3rd pair option IMO.

Staal wasnt as bad as people seem to think he was this past season. If SY cant find any better vet options, I could see him back as LD for Seider.

I think Juolevi gets re-signed and waived to GR to serve as an emergency call-up.

    Lets talk RFA.

    Juolevi

    Walman

    Stephens

    Zadina

I would re-sign all of them.  1.5 mil / 2 years each for Juolvevi and Walman.  1 mil per for Stephens / 3 years.  2.5 per / 4 years for Zadina.

Unless we are going into the season with Oesterle, Juolevi, and Walman as our LD (I hope not), I suspect that at least one of Juolevi or Walman are let go or re-signed, waived, and sent down to GR. Probably Juolevi.

Stephens and Zadina will both be re-signed and given full time spots on the roster.

Bad example. The last time we won the cup in 2008 Zetterberg and Datsyuk played together. Z and D played together more often then not especially in the early years along Holmstrom and later Cleary Big Bert and Abdelkader. The Euro twins never should have been split and only were because of big brain Babcock.

Another bad example. Lidstrom didnt play much with Chelios but played alot with Coffey and Murphy 2 hof and Schneider and Rafalski not hof but great d.

On this current Red Wings team it might be smart to split up 2 best d but if were as deep as we expect to be on d I can see Ed-Mo playing alot together to form the best d pair in the league like the 90s/00 Red Wings.

Its not a bad example. Early in his career, Lidstrom did play with Coffey. But that was also before Lids had fully developed into one of the best dmen of all time. And when you look at the other defenseman on those rosters, Coffey was the only D partner that made sense at the time. Ramsey, Bergevin, Pushor, Rouse, Eriksson: all were 3rd pair D. The other 2 were Fetisov and Konstantinov. Lidstrom and Coffey werent paired together because they were the 2 best D on the team. It's arguable that they weren't the 2 best D on those teams anyway.

After the trade to Detroit, Chelios rarely played with Lids. At the time, Lidstrom was paired with Larry Murphy. Who although being only a year older than Chelios, had obviously had significantly more age related decline than Chelios. After Murphy retired, and before Chelios left the team, Lidstrom played with Mathieu Dandenault, Frederick Olausson, Dmitri Bykov, Mathieu Schneider, Danny Markov, and Brian Rafalski. Even Andreas Lilja played more with Lids than Chelios.

My point: Lidstrom was rarely paired as a "dynamic duo" throughout most of his career. Chelios was, at times, a better player than whoever Lids D partner was. And vice versa. Lids and Chelios are arguably among the best NHL defenseman of all time. And yet they were rarely paired together despite playing on the same team.

Seider and Edvinsson may not be the next Lidstrom and Chelios. But they will both presumably be elite, dynamic defenseman as well. I suspect, and would hope, that whoever the new coach is, plays them on separate pairs in order to maximize the defense corp.

  11. Chelios and Lidstrom, 2 future HOF, didnt play together, except for some PK. Seider and Edvinsson will most likely be split up as neither needs an elite partner. And having them on separate pairs allows for one or the other to be in the ice for most of the game.

I really dont have a problem with Yzerman going wing or D. Draft the best player like with Raymond. F position.

At that pick, you could go with position without settling for a lesser player.

  13. 12 hours ago, Jonas Mahonas said:

And Bert isnt a replacement for any of them

Exactly. Bert is a completely different player.

11 hours ago, Jonas Mahonas said:

I like him, but he's definitely benefitted from Larkin and good minutes.  I do think that he's earned his ice time, tho.  I just dont think the Wings need to overpay him.  He's worth about 5 mil per in my books.

You arent getting a 30 goal scorer for 5 mil a season.

  14. 15 hours ago, bIueadams said:

I guess he was injured twice this year. Not sure how he was used, but he was supposed to be behind Veleno and Raymond on the depth chart and then both made the Wings.

Stalled progression. It happens. See: Ryan Sproul.

    What happened?

Last season 22 pts in 28 games and a call up. This year 18 pts in 50 games and -17.

Can someone who watched GR explain this?

Sure. He is not very good.
