We have to draft Defensemen the next 2 drafts. Our talent pool in Detroit looks pretty decent with Edvinsson, Seider, ASP, Johansson, Wallinder, and Tuomisto, but we are going to need to start stocking up Toledo and Grand Rapids, as it gets pretty damn thin after these guys pop up to the show.

They're because we have to ice the puck or have our goalie stop it a lot more frequently when those 2 are on the ice.

I'm all about these guys remaining in our bottom 3 (5,6,7) positions for defenders going forward. Gost, while weak 5 on 5 during the first 40 games, has received the message loud an clear for the last 40 and responded beautifully. Somebody got in his ear and told him the floating has to stop and he needs to play defense. He's been an awesome 3rd pairing guy since that. Maatta has been our best defender other than Seider this year, imo. We should reup this guy for 5 years as soon as he can be re-upped. He's earned a longer contract. +16 on the year, and helped make Gost look like a 2-way defensemen and not a forward playing defense. I value Maata 3rd most on our back end, even before Walman. It's hard to find a stalwart defender at the payrate he's getting. The big question with these guys is "Will they play for 3 million a year each?" We can't have Gost chew up 5 mil per and Maatta take up 4 mil per. If their agents start getting aggressive, it's going to be time to pull up the Tuomistos and Wallinders of the farm system and get them the reps. Hoping we don't need to break those guys in so fast though. They are not NHL ready, and probably won't be for a good 3-4 more seasons. If I'm Yzerman, I'm looking to lock up Maatta and Gost at 3 mil per for the next 5 years and let them know the 3rd pairing is theirs to man. One thing Lalonde actually does well, in my eyes, is spread the minutes for our defensemen. Maatta and Gost will probably be able to get more $ from other teams, but I don't think they'll get the same minutes OR play with a team as good as the Wings will be over the next few seasons once the handcuffs (Chiarot, Petry, Perron, Husso) are removed.

The strangest thing about Chia is that he's gifted below the dots in the offensive zones. He's an absolute pylon on defense, but when he activates on offense, he looks exactly like what we need IF HE WOULD JUST HIT SOMEBODY. The Red Wings have a few issues right now. They have 2 guys they call defensemen not playing good defense. And the team is weak and soft as F. Converting Chiarot and Petry to banger 4th liners with as much license required and telling Veleno to work his ass off on D to cover for them would solve a lot of issues, imo. We need guys that break body parts of our opponents before the other teams' guys do it to us. Both Chiarot and Petry have freight train type potential, but play like bunny rabbits.

You gotta think he's gonna get Florida 9 if he goes to Tampa or FLA (Panthers signing him would NOT surprise me at all). To make him pay an extra 1 mil in state tax and live 5 months in sub 40 degree weather, that's an extra 2 mil in my books. Hockey season in Florida is pretty much paradise. If the Wings want him, it's gonna cost them.

For me, next year isn't the year to go balls. Hear me out on this one, Colin. Would you be ok if YzerSCAM and LaDUMB moved Petry and Chiarot to our 4th line with Veleno and gave Edvinsson and Johansson 2nd pairing duties? That's the course of action I would take if I had to work with next year's roster as it stands now. Let Sprong, Perron, Gost, and Reimer go. Re-sign Kane 4 years, 6 mil per. Sign Stamkos 4 years x 12 mil per. Sign Fischer 1 year, 1.5 mil. Sign Veleno x years, 1.5 mil per. Sign Seider 8 years, 8 mil per. Trade Husso Trade Fabbri Berggren-Larkin-Raymond Debrincat-Stamkos-Kane Rasmussen-Compher-Copp Chiarot-Veleno-Petry Fischer/Kasper/Danielson Walman-Seider Edvinsson-Johansson Maatta-Holl Lyon Cossa Fabbri, Husso, Chiarot contracts cannot come off our books fast enough, imo. Getting rid of those at draft time has to be priority 1. We have close to 20 mil of tied up in TRASH right now. We have to convert it to something useful or take it out.

For some reason, I felt at peace with things last night. Watching Petry stay on the ice 45 seconds too long, then pylon, then Compher NOT clear an easy clear, then a goal. It all just validated everything for me and made me feel right. I am right. Petry and Chiarot suck. They shouldn't be on the team, and they've cost us a playoff birth. The mismanagement of a roster is the worst this year that I've seen from a Red Wings team. The Dave Lewis + Cujo days had better decision making.
