Restarting the rebuild - Fully wiping the Holland slate clean
bIueadams replied to bIueadams's topic in General
Larkin's on pace for 720 pts in 1000 games. You know who had similar numbers to that? All the greats = Jason Pominville, Mikko Koivu, Cory Stillman, Petr Sykora, Petr Nedvded, Martin Straka Some real names to remember. Won a lot of cups too. Toews already has 866 pts at about 1000 games. Guys at that party = Alex Tanguay, Slava Kozlov, Ted Lindsay, Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden You know guys who actually earn names for themselves Toews had already captained his team to THREE cups at Larkin's current age. Is the youngest captain to ever win a Conn Smythe. Youngest triple gold member of all time. Only 1 of 8 players to win a gold and a cup in the same season. Won a world cup. Two time NHL cover athlete. And has a Selke to his name to boot. Larkin's personal awards at the same age = Big ten freshmmen of the year 2015 But yes I'm sure Larkin will be remembered as "better than Toews", and this isn't just you being a fussy d-boss fanboy -
Walstedt would have been a good choice that we wouldn't have had to trade for...
-
Meh - I wouldn't have wanted SY to pick him up on waivers at this point - I'm just eternally pissed at how badly Blash used this player. Leaving him on the bench and calling up Smith/Hirose/Panik over him was objectively retarded. I mean what can you really expect from a player if you give them no chance to play? To Newsy's credit this year - SY gave him Soderblom and Berggren and he's actually used them. So that's nice.
-
Wanted to bump this thread because Dubas is getting fired this year and I''m jacked for it.
-
Oh would you look at that - Svech still has an NHL job - Even though Bobby Ryan, Filppula, Smith, Panik, Nielsen, and Hirose - all guys that Blash benched Svech in favor of - don't. Interesting.

Two interesting teams that are struggling this year: Caps and Blues (f*** you Nick Leddy) Yzerman loves to trade with the Blues... They have Kyrou and Thomas getting BIG raises next year and ROR and Tarasneko's contracts expiring. It would be interesting to add Blues C ROR to this group of former Blues. But probably costs the farm. I'd love to shore up the defense for next year and get Orlov out of Washington. Or maybe to a lesser extent get Nick Jensen back from them. Orlov - Seider Chiarot - Hronek Maata - Walman/Lindstrom ^^^ this would be pretty sick to start the year with If we can't prey Orlov out of Washington, I'd take a run at CBJ's Gavrikov. Basically a younger version of Orlov. -

Okay - say we do the opposite this year - we decide to buy at the deadline... what would we even try to acquire? I doubt patience plan Yzerman is ready to spend big on a major acquisition yet. Yet I also don't seem him throwing picks at rentals at this stage either. So maybe more cheapish role players like Walman and Sundqvist that he'll likely re-sign? I don't think we need anymore bottom 4 Dmen when the bottom 4 has been solid and there's a lot of depth there. Maybe a PK forward to take the PK burden off Larkin and Copp? But - even with our injuries at forward - we will have a glut of bottom 6 forwards again next year witth Ras/Veleno/Zadina/Sundqvist/Berggren/Soderblom/Fabbri/Kubalik. We really don't need anymore. I'm totally at a loss as to what this team would even add. Maybe that's why you sell? Or just sit on our thumbs? -

2022 - Mackinnon 2021 - Stamkos 2020 - Stamkos 2019 - ROR <------------ plz ignore 99% of cup teams. This is the norm. 2018 - Backstrom 2017 - Crosby 2016 - Crosby 2015 - Toews 2014 - Kopitar 2013 - Toews 2012 - Kopitar 2011 - Bergeron 2010 - Toews 2009 - Crosby 2008 - Datsyuk -

Larkin is a limited time asset. Eventually he won't be a mediocre 1C anymore. And Eventually he will retire. The question is, do you believe this team wins a cup with Larkin as our 1C? If you don't, then the futures are worth it regardless of the haul. But I do believe the haul would be very good. I realize that's a tough question to answer, but I personally don't think Larkin leads us to a cup. He's a great player - but he's no Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Mackinnon, Stamkos, Bergeron, Crosby, Kopitar, etc etc. He's a replaceable player. The Dale McCourt of the 2020s. Hell, the Leafs have Mattehews and Tavares down the middle and cant put a cup together - but Detroit fans expect Larkin and Copp to get it done... I'm more than a bit sick of the narrative in the Wings community that Larkin is somehow untouchable. For a fanbase that's fielded great centers like Yzerman, Fedorov, Zetterberg, Datsyuk for the last 20+ years the standards have significantly dropped. He's a great player - but not someone worthy of special treatment IMO. I like what Yzerman is doing, and I think clinging to Larkin and Bertuzzi is a mistake. After suffering for so long, what we should want to build is a dynastic core of as many future HOFers as we can muster. Larkin and Bertuzzi aren't HOFers - they're decent peripheral stars. Great teams aren't built on the backs of decent peripheral stars. They should be traded while we're still rebuilding for the future assets we need to build an all Yzerman core of elite players - Kasper, Raymond, Cossa, Seider, Edvinsson, etc. Out with the Holland players. In with the Yzerman players. -

Didnt have a 1D or a compentent top4 for a decade. But a 2C playing 1C is where we draw the line. -

110%. Not even Holland ever let this happen besides maybe Hossa? I trust SY will either sign or trade b4 the deadline. -

Straight up. Imagine if we get johnny hockeyed by Larkin... There is ZERO reason to wait until UFA to sign. @redw1ngs has no logic behind anything he's said and is a verifiable idiot. If re-signings are happening I expect they will be our Christmas presents, because after that its gonna get fukky -

I don't see any logic behind why Larkin would wait till JUST B4 UFA TO SIGN You're absolutely in the right here @marcaractac if we want to retain Larkin and/or bertuzzi they should be signed well b4 the deadline. When we start getting into Jan and Feb with no contract in place it's going to get very concerning. -
Joe Veleno is at least usable unlike Zadina. But god - another massive disappointment. I see nothing from him to suggest he has any future potential beyond being a bottom 6C who goes through the motions. I blame Holland and @krsmith17 for that draft.

Brennan Ali now at 12 pts in 15 games in the USHL. For a 7th round pick this is inspiring. For example Dylan James - our 2nd round pick at #40 overall - last year scored 61 in 62 games in the USHL. Ali is 4 months younger and is now doing the same/similar. Hopefully we can get this kid into the U of Denver next year and get him some time with Mazur and Buium.

Beggren playing less than 13 min a night and scoring consistently. Hot damn. inb4 he's a holland pick

Yes - in almost all major sports there are concepts called buyers and sellers at the trade deadline. Typically, sellers will unload their expiring contracts to the buyers. If our playoff outlook is grim come the trade deadline I would like us to follow this model and become sellers of our expiring contracts. If Bertuzzi isn't anything special then why would we get anything of value in return for him? Because SY is better than Holland. Do we need a refresher on the topic of the thread? Yes -

Well it's actually pretty easy you see. No math involved. First, you stop watching the head movies in your brain. Second - and this is the most daring part - you hypothesize this team will get rolled in the playoffs. Third, you look at our expiring contracts on capfriendly. And lastly you remember Larkin isnt special. And there you have it. How often does this actually happen though?
