I agree with Kip - we're very much middle of the pack right now, even if that's the low end of the middle pack, we're still in that group. It'll be hard to sink much farther. I guess it will sorta depend how this TDL goes. Like if we ditch Stecher, Staal, and Leddy at the deadline, our already bad defense will look like this: Dekeyser - Seider Oesterle - Hronek Renouf - Lindstrom That's a recipe for Ned and Greiss to get torched every night. If SY does something crazy like trade Bertuzzi that would be a big blow as well too IMO. My honest prediction though is he trades Namestnikov and Leddy, and that's it. Maybe Stecher too if someone likes him for a low cost depth option.

D are trash after Seider. Ned is way different than prime Howard/Bernier/Greiss. More acrobatic and aggressive playing the puck. But not actually any better than those guys in their days. He's average, and will get shattered and exposed if the D allows it. But he's still very new to this league and should get better over the next few years. This group needs Edvinsson soon.

Rasmussen was and is by far the most ready of the group when he joined. I just don't think more time down there would've hurt. If Zadina wouldn't be dominating the AHL right now then he definitely shouldn't be in the NHL.

The Winnipeg fans all seem to really like Svech.

Everyone constantly kvetched about over ripening when the team was good, but we should have practiced that more in these waning years. That's on Holland, and Yzerman a bit. Svech is having himself a nice little season in Winnipeg. Doesn't look like he'll ever be a scorer, and the Jets are okay with that. He's mostly skating on bottom 6 checking lines and shuffling into the top 6 when needed to be a puck getter for their better players. He's doing that on the 2nd line right now. Injury didn't help us with him, but his usage by Blash and Yzerman both towards the end are head scratching... playing only a few games here and there. Never being sent the AHL. Like he was being written off. Should have been kept in the AHL as long as humanly possible. Zadina and Ras should have both been kept in the AHL longer. Full seasons at least. So they have the chance to develop further without so much pressure and gain the confidence that comes with that. Veleno should stay in GR. Don't even toy with brining him up yet. Let him dominate down there a while.

Swapping Greiss (50% retained) for Koskinen gives Holland a better goalie and saves him $2.7 in cap to make other moves. He should gift us a 2nd for this service.

Texier, 22, Center, but ask seems way too high. They want a roster player and a 1st. His stats are meh and he he hasn't played much... I'm assuming bc of injury. But he's doing well this year and entered the league at 19/20. That's impressive. But all of this makes you wonder why CBJ are trying to sell him...

Yeah B Schenn is a good comparable I'd say Interesting. They're losing Statsny this year, and his entire salary will go to PLD's raise and other RFA's. They have no money to give Copp and will probably sell him at this deadline. I'm really not into picking up pending UFA's. A 50-60 point, soon to be 28 year old centermen, will cost us an arm and a leg too. But he's from Ann Arbor, seems to be really loyal to the Jets taking bridge deals and being a good soldier on the 3rd line, and has played at UofM with Larkin in the past. We also have a whole at 2C where he wants to be, and all the pizza riches to pay him with. If there's anyone we could convince to extend here it's probably him. This is the exact type balls to the wall swing I could see Yzerman taking too. I assume Jets will want cost controlled, ready to play, prospects since they're in win now (next year) mode. Copp for Zadina/Veleno + whatever gets it done

Copp was hot out the gate this year. Slowed down after Christmas. IDK why. Copp is Sheahans former ceiling realized IMO. Thick strong centerman who skates decent and plays both ends of the ice well. I'm not like all about him. But Larks and Mich connection have me interested.

Copp plays C and is a capable C IMO. Last year in particular he played a ton of wing. But before that he was their 3C and he's back to playing C a lot this year. Copps time in Winnipeg has been weird. They've had x2 top 6 centers on top of him his entire career, even though he probably could easily be a 2C. So they used him as a 3C way longer than they probably should have. Eventually he made it too obvious that he's too good for the bottom 6 so they found him a spot at top 6 wing last year. I think the Jets really messed up not trading him sooner. They should have tried to address a different roster need with him in a trade instead of holding him back and forcing him to play wing. Now they'll lose him for nothing.

I think Erne v Names is a bad comparison for an entirely different reason, but you're missing the point here. Nobody is comparing Erne and Names AS PLAYERS. We're comparing them because of their roles on the team. They are both middle-6 ancillary pieces. In our situation you sell middle-6 ancillary pieces. I think Erne v Names is a bad comparison for this because Erne was 25 and still under RFA control when he re-signed. Names is a 29 year old pending UFA. I'm not gonna split hairs about which player is better. Namestnikov just isn't very important to this team going forward. There will be plenty of 3rd line PK guys on the market this summer.

Yeah I see this as exactly another Erne situation. Namesnikov is an up and down player already too. This year he's great. Last year he was awful. He's been traded for 4ths in his career twice now. If we can get a 3rd - absolutely get that. Good point. We have Vrana coming back too, so it's time to start cutting forwards.

I actually hope Seider loses the calder. It would be insane because he should already be getting Norris votes IMO. But if they snub him he will come back hungrier and more violent then ever before. They snubbed Z and look how that turned out... Seider and I are keeping our eyes on the norris. Give lil Trevor his baby trophy.

I was advocating for Gustafsson last year a bit until we signed my other boy the OOOOOOOOST My impression is he would be like another Eric Gelinas for Seider. Sucks defensively but can run a powerplay. If that's what we think we need then that's a good low cost option. I'm not interested in Lindholm at all for all the reasons stated. Unfortunately there are not a lot of sexy options for LHD this year. I do think it would be smart to put up a little more money on fair term this year and get someone better than Gustafsson. And that man is named Nikita Zadorov. Imagine Zadorov paired with Seider. Now go change your underwear. We can probably have him for like 4-4.5 mil for 3-4 years.

I've been back n forth all year on Names - but I've made up my mind. Absolutely trade. He's 29 and a career 35-40 pt player who PKs. Totally replaceable ancillary player. He's having an up year right now fersure, but that's exactly why you should trade him. He's at his most valuable at the end of his contract and twenties. Perfect scenario for us. Most years all you can get is a 4th for a player like him. Last year we may not have even been able to get a 5th. But now I think we might even be able to squeeze out a 3rd.... logic says trade trade trade. The counter - the decision to keep him - I think is = He's a Detroit boy. He's happy here and playing well. Maybe this is a longterm role player for us like Maltby or Glendening. But that's just emotion talking. Committing to ancillary players like this is a luxury you can achieve when you're really good and they want to stay. But look, even Glendening walked out us when we got bad... And we didn't even trade Glendog last year. Who know's why. Maybe there wasn't a good market for him, maybe SY really wanted to try to keep him still. Whatever the reason, we can all in hindsight agree that we absolutely should have traded him if we could have. Good feels vs logic should be an easy win for logic everytime. And he hasn't been re-signed yet which tells me he's probably on the block at this point. Sucks because I do really like him this year. We just ain't winning the cup this year and need to think about future assets now.

I hope we've buried the excuse "He's too young" at this point. We watched KR march up and down this board beating the Smith and Jurco drum under the guise "They're still young". Folks called @mackel and I trolls for saying Zadina sucks because "He's still young". And on the flipside, the Seider pick was doubted at the time even though you could watch his youth play and see that he was destined to be a phenom. The point being = you can evaluate talent at any age. Youth =/= potential. Play = potential. I was happy as anyone when we drafted Zadina. His play in the Q was great. But after watching him in the AHL my attitudes changed. I think it's ridiculous that we can supposedly excuse bad play in the AHL and NHL because "He young". It's honestly r-slurred.
