He traded Hronek for it and then stood pat until 17. when ASP fell in his lap. Fun fact: SY has traded down just as many times as he has traded up in the first round: once.
-
That would be foolish.
-
He didn't trade up to get ASP.
-
I still say you're too optimistic
-
Did you see his 1st round picks in Tampa? They were mostly garbage. The Asian girl in the apt downstairs he talks about banging but has no real shot.
-
To be honest, I never really put that much effort into examining your list. It just struck me as overly optimistic without much thought. Funny to see others put more effort into comparing us then I ever did from the beginning.

Series Thread: Edmonton Oilers Vs Florida Panthers

Exactly my temperance with him. Maltby was a scorer before the NHL, IIRC. But made his living as more of a grinder with a scoring touch in the NHL. It's certainly not a bad player to be, but I think Mazur is probably more that than a top 6 F in the NHL. I would say Lombardi is my dark horse.

Literally depends on the circumstances. Like Babcock, he needs to be given the right scenario to succeed. I do believe that the KH hate over the years was overblown. The streak was a mandate so I don't even blame him for stretching it out for as long as he did. And I don't think he is a BAD GM. He is just better as a tinkerer than as a builder/rebuilder.

Not unless Husso is purged. Do not want to carry 3 goalies again. agreed. Murray, Samsonov, Hart, and Swayman all UFAs.

No he isn't. In 13 NHL drafts where Yzerman had at least one 1st round pick, he has NEVER traded up with his first pick. He has stood pat 12 of those drafts and traded down once to acquire more picks. 15th overall is his first pick. 0% in past drafts is not a "good" chance he trades up with that pick this time around. In the 3 drafts where he had 2 1st rounders, he traded up once (Cossa) and stood pat twice. Even when he has a 2nd pick in the first round, it is still only a 33% chance he trades up with that 2nd pick. And the 1 time he did it, he had multiple picks in other rounds to use to do it, a luxury he does not have this year. Yzerman only has 1 pick in each of the first 6 rounds. Guess how many 1st round picks he has this draft? So out of 16 overall 1st round picks in 14 drafts, Yzerman has traded up only once. That is a whopping 93.5% of the time he stands pat or trades down. And he has NEVER EVER traded his 1st pick to move UP. So, how exactly is he known for doing this?

Selection bias? I listed literally the 1st 3 search results I found in my first post about it. All of them had him lower than 9. I didn't even have to try hard. Are you suggesting I search out every available mock draft/ranking? That's ludicrous. I even looked up Central Scouting, Button, and McKenzie after the fact, and they still backed up what I said. It's not selection bias if I am not intentionally leaving any out. Selection bias would be picking one guy to support your argument while ignoring 5 others of equal value that don't. I thought no one paid attention to draft rankings.

I was replying to a comment about how no one was surprised that Nate went 9th and listed multiple reputable sources that most certainly would have been surprised. Believe it or not, there are "surprises" at every draft. And those surprises are based on where players are drafted vs projections. Its not really that complicated. Why would any GM? And yet they do, right? They take the risk because they think they can get the most by doing so. Which is literally the point of any managerial gamble: trade, signing, or draft pick.
-
Not if both happen. Which they do. You arent paying attention. I never said to trade back if the guy you really want is available. I said if you think you can gamble and get a guy you like, or if there are a few guys you like and you know you can still get one by trading down and still acquiring other assets. That is literally what teams are doing when they trade down. Saying "they don't gamble and trade back"...yes, they do. By using your logic, Kotkaniemi and Hayton happen. Sure. So the NHL's Central Scouting is just a charity for unemployed scouts then.

Exactly. That still makes a lot of them NHLers based on that. Not happening. ASP and Berggren are both NHLers. ASP most likely 2RD behind Seider and Berggren a younger cheaper replacement for Fabbri. Edvinsson will be a 2/3 D. AJo is probably fringe and could easily be another Cholowski. Not convinced about Mazur. Probably makes the NHL, but middle six AT BEST. Danielson is still young, I predict 2C. Kasper is another Copp/Compher. May develop into 2nd liner, but I have had my doubts since he was drafted. No other skaters on Scott's list makes 100 games in the NHL. Except maybe as fringe guys.

No it's not. KH was a scout and AGM, but those 90s teams were more Bowman and JD. KH was given a team with Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Murphy, Holmstrom, Larionov, and Vernon when he took over as GM in 97. He won 2 Cups with that core. He didn't win another Cup until 2008 with Daysyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, and Hasek as his core. Dats and Z were Hakan. KH just threw them a bone as late round picks. And even then he won only one Cup with this core.
-
referring to the fact most players never hit their ceiling, and many still surpass their floor. Majority of players fall somewhere in between. If you apply that to this list, there are too many that are still reaching the NHL and too many that are long term NHLers.
-
ok. He was handed a Cup caliber team in Detroit. He didn't build it. Same as in EDM. He benefitted from playing behind Cup teams. He was never elite. He didn't helo the Islanders or Blues do much.
-
I would sign him to a one day contract just to troll the media.
-
way too optimistic. You may hit on a few, but most of the time, these lists are way overrating players. I would be surprised if half these guys play 100 games in the NHL.
-
Both times he started with generational talent. Yzerman/Lidstrom, Datsyuk/Zetterberg, McDavid/Draisaitl. Give him a team without that, and he sucks.
-
So they eliminated Fury. Good job guys.
