Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread
LeftWinger replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
That's too funny! I knew ducks needed a goalie, as a matter of fact I mentioned packaging Howard for Fowler a couple months ago. I guess Holland feels jimmy and his cap are far more valuable than a draft pick. All bitching aside about helm, Howard is the real waste of money. Damn I wish Holland wasn't so stupid when it comes to his players. Coreau has to go through waivers, I hope someone snags him just to spite. -

We could've done without him. If he left, we wouldn't miss him. That's why it was wasted money. But as long as he plays where he belongs, then do be it. Again, we're going to have to trade enough forwards though so legit top 9 guys aren't sitting around or in GR. -
Power(less)play WAS the issue. Having a better coach and better personnel (Vanek and Nielsen) should alliviate that issue. It may not be the best in the league, but it will be better.

Wings will trade for Fowler. I'll stop the Helm hate, until he proves, yet again where he belongs in the lineup. Which is nowhere near top 6. If they play him top 6 again all year, then the hammer needs to come down, or he needs to score 25 goals and prove he belongs there. I just hope that the trade for Fowler involves enough forwards so no desrving one is forced to sit or be in GR. -

He won't get 20 points. $1M is money wasted? No, $3.8M is money wasted on a bottom 6 guy. He is no better than a 4th line player, he's proven it over and over. Hands of cement, defensive lapses more than a few times. I'm not saying Miller/Ott are better, but Helm is far from worth the contract he got. And if when all the details come out and he has any kind of clause, Holland deserves to be fired...this is right up there with the constant signing of the clearys, sammys and berts. -

Bet he has a NMC, then he'll have to be protected. I'm absolutely positive he will. Worst signing ever. -

I like the combos, but ott will not be waived. He was brought here to play and play he will. Helm was the useless signing. -
signed Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV
LeftWinger replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Ya, look at the log jam caused by re-signing Helm. This guy will be the downfall of this all because he MUST play in the top 9. He is no better than a 4th liner, but no, he is now going to bump more deserving 3rd liners out of the organization... -
Trade jimmy....

Yes, but Helm is not top 9 material, but because of his contract he won't be 4th line. If he were on the 4th, I could agree with you, but he's not better than the 3 I listed on my 3rd line. Helm was not signed to be 4th line, but he isn't as good as players that should be 3rd line. Because of his deal, one or both AA and Mantha will be in GR.Plus disney.com isn't going anywhere. -
I think he'll be awarded vaisilovskiy money. So if Holland is offering $4M+ he best take it or he'll find himself south of $4M. He has no water to tread when comparing himself to vaisilovskiy.

IMO, we have a 4th line, Miller - disney.com - Ott There's no need to keep Jurco or Pulk if they're not going to get top 9 play. There is also no need to keep them in the press box. Trade them for something. You have very capable 13th/14th forwards tgat are in GR. Mantha and AA should be on the opening night roster. If, for tgat to happen, Nyquist needs to be dealt, so be it. Problem is, there is no room with the signing of Helm. He has taken up a very valuable roster spot. IMO this should be the lineup: Zetterberg - Larkin - Abby Tatar - Nielsen - Vanek Sheahan - AA - Mantha Miller - disney.com - Ott Frk ...but Helm screws the whole thing up. -

I agree, but then again, there has been very little room on this team with the wasting of money and roster spots for KFQ and BFE. KFQ should've never been resigned 4 years ago. E should be gone now. If these two weren't on the roster the last 4 years, then we could've maybe seen what XO or Sproul could do in the NHL. Jensen was the best puck moving dman last training camp, but didn't get to sniff NHL ice because of the jam up. There's only one spot open, I hope Holland loses the other two for free just because of his "loyalty" to overpaid, overrated defensemen. -
Sure, but I maintain 4 yrs should be something that's good for both sides. Just my opinion.

Well they have to make it now....I believe one of them will be dealt of lost to waivers. -
Both he and DD must realize we only have $9M available with Franzen and Vitale LTIR. 4 years $4.5M AAV for both. Doesn't sound like they're being screwed with that.

IMO there are 3 dmen in GR that will be on this team within the next 4 years. Russo, Hicketts and Saarijarvi. They will replace Kronwall, Ericsson and Smith respectively. If there is a deal made, it'll be for someone to lead this D into that era. Now, maybe Smith gets dealt in a fowler deal, but here is what I see in that time. (Assuming it's Fowler) Fowler - Saarijarvi DeKeyser - Hicketts Russo - Marchenko Not in that order, but for sure our top 6. Unfortunately Jensen, Sproul and XO have no future here and will probably be dealt or waived or spend their careers in GR. They could sign elsewhere if they choose to. We have roughly $9M available with our LTIR, give them both $4.5M deals for 4 years each. Then make the trade for our top guy. Going to have to trade Howard this season....to someone. -

Problem is, nobody's trading number one defenseman. We would have never had a shot at Weber or Subban. There are no top 5 defense men out there available. But he has to make a deal to make our defense better and Fowler would do that. Defense or not he has to deal some of these forward there's too many of them. -

Another local kid though, he will probably be proud to come home and play here. He'd most likely re-sign and end his career here. I like the kid, I think he's better than Shattenkirk, plus the home factor means whatever we give up would be worth it because he would more than likely stay for a long time. Shattenkirk has no reason to stay after this one season. I hear Winnipeg is not giving up Trouba, so that's why I didn't mention him. -
Signed Thomas Vanek signs 1 year, $2.6m deal with Detroit
LeftWinger replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
I dont. Vanek is only 32 years old. He is a much better option than we had last season. He is a PP specialist, scores dirty rebound goals and has the potential to score 30+ goals. No one is going to be surprised if he only scores 10, everyone already expects him to fail, but he could very well score 35 or more. He will get top PP time, he will top 6 if not top 3 minutes. He will return to form here. He Went To A PRESSURE HOTBED in Minnesota. He was supposed to join the Olsen twins and bring a Cup. They will not win a Cup anytime soon and the pressure is on because of the twins signings and he was supposed to be a missing piece. That's a ton of pressure. Here he can relax, help the PP and help get us back to the playoffs. This is not a Cup team, but with Nielsen here for the rest of his career and with the right move for a top defender, there's no reason why this team cannot win a Cup within 3-5 years. Vanek will want to be part of that and he will be out to prove he belongs. Again, he's only 32, he has a good 5-6 of quality hockey left. He can't be compared to Richards, he is 36, I never expected him to be re-signed, in expect Vanek to earn himself a 4 year $20M-ish extension. -

This thread has been high jacked by the world wide criminal syndicate known as the Corsi Bandits. It's actually making people not want to post or read here. I find myself just scrolling past the posts that have "short story" qualifications. Or name calling arguments. What I'd like to know is which would you rather do: Trade AA plus 1st for Shattenkirk OR Nyquist plus 2nd for Fowler For my money I'm going Fowler, I'd sweetin the deal a bit with a GR defenseman like Sproul or XO if I had to. But no way I give up AA.
