Yes, but if you are landing Franson for $3.5M - $4M for 2-3 years and then dumping E and K you are actually gaining a roster spot in the long run and saving over $2M in cap. E's contract is horrendous and is WAY too long. Call Nill up and see if he wants him for a low pick. Kronwall - Franson Dekeyser - Green Smith - Quincey Jensen

Johnny Oduya signs with Stars 2 yrs $3.75 AAV

Think this guy would've been better to have than Q or E....but Q is gone after this year anyhow so don't want to take up another roster spot that one of the kids deserves...I we could've traded E, now that would have been a nice upgrade and savings. E is hot garbage now, just wait 4 more years... -

There will be no s*** storm, not even a fart parade when it comes to Franzen. I do, unfortunately, understand the financial side of it and the possible ways he can hurt us more against the cap. If he Is going to be the 13th forward and bump Andersson/Ferraro/Callahan to waivers, I would rather Holland address this issue now and try to trade to odd kids out so at least you don't lose them for nothing. The NHL is a business and I understand having to make decisions based on money first. So, that being known, lets look at who will really be the odd men out with Franzen healthy enough to float around the ice: WITH Franzen, they have 13 forwards signed, Jurco and Pulk would make 15 and with Callahan it makes 16. You have to think that Jurco and Pulk (barring a trade) would be the choices over Ferraro, Callahan or Andersson. So with your 14 forwards set with Jurco and Pulk rounding themout you will have to waive/trade 2 of Ferraro, Callahan and Andersson, there will nZERO room on this team if Franzen starts the season healthy. Tatar-Datsyuk-Abby Nyquist-Richards-Zetterberg Jurco-SHeahan-Pulk Miller-Glendening-Helm Franzen/Ferraro Sure there is a chance they clear, and they wouldn't be a huge loss I guess, but I just hope that Holland has a trade up his sleeve or two of these guys because at least getting a pick would be fine. Also, there are a few players in GR WITH exemptions left that could be called up if Franzen goes LTIR, or if there are any other injuries, that wouldn't have to clear waivers to be sent back down. I am not even entirely sure that an injury call up has to clear waivers... Sure the loss would be minimal, so long as it gets us some kind of compensation in return, but to lose them for ZERO return for a roll of the dice with Franzen is not a good thing. -

....b-b-b-b-b-but then who do you lose next year? The year after? The year after? Eventually our prospects won't be named Ferraro and Callahan, it will be AA, Mantha & Larkin...is a decrepit Franzen still worth keeping then? -

For the record, I didn't turn on him...I have disliked him for a looooooooong time. And you all will see, give him the roster spot he will come in score 5 goals in 2 weeks, then take the rest of the year off on LTIR. Oh, and you will less some good prospects FOR FREE... he may even come in a score 10 goals in 6 games...but that will be it! Head case.... -
Don't really mean to bump this up, but don't know where else to ask....does anyone know what happened to Steve Santini? He was selected in the 2nd round by the Devils and I think he was well sought after in the draft. I remember hoping that the Wings could've gotten him. I look him up and see he played 2 years in the NCAA, but has yet to sign a contract with the Devils. Is he one of those UFA's now or has he just decided the NHL is not for him? Anyone know anything else about his situation?
-
I we get talking about next summer's UFA's, I can honestly say that will be the 1st summer we may not be in dire need for a D upgrade. Up front, now is a different story. If Richards comes in and does what he is asked to do, I can actually see him being re-signed. I would love to try to steal Backes to be a center to usher out the Datsyuk era and in the next era. Heck, maybe Datsyuk does the old 1 year at a time trick until he is 40 as well. Backes would redefine our top 6 for sure. We should have room for 1 or 2 additions after re-signing the guys we want to keep and letting others go. Maybe 3 spots if #93 is still out. I wouldn't mind seeing Okposo in Detroit as a UFA either.

Ya, the Gem of The District is going to be the Red Wings Cadillac Centre© Yes, that was my idea long ago and I am sticking with it! I am excited for the new place! Love the Joe, but its getting junky. (if some of you remember back in the "Name the New Arena" thread, I used the Cadillac name, not for the car, but the founder of Detroit, Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, but I am sure along with using the founders image, GM would love to have the Cadillac name and cars throughout the building. $$$$$$$) -

There is always the chance that Franzen is and stays healthy, and score 25-30 goals again for then next 5 years, I get it, but that's a big CHANCE. I understand Andersson and Ferraro and Callahan are bottom 6er's and wouldn't be a huge loss, but what if you lose all three and then Franzen goes LTIR again this season, then next season it all starts again? Sorry to yap about Franzen, but damn I hate to lose these kids we've groomed for free... ...ok, anyhow, I also got the feeling in the article that Jurco is not really loving it here in Detroit. Maybe he just wants to one year deal to see how Blash is going to untilize him. Maybe he just feels that this organization has not been for him thus far. I am hoping that a line of Jurco-Sheahan-Pulkkinen really lights it up. (although I would love to see Pulk with Dats) But if Jurco's heart isn't really here (ie Hudler) then maybe a trade is the best idea. IT would free up a spot for a healthy Franzen or for someone who wants to be in Detroit for a long time... -

Ya, jimmy, but it he says he is healthy to start the season, decisions HAVE to be made then to waive players, not when he decides that he needs LTIR in Novemeber, theres the chance that some of our kids will already be claimed. Do you want to sacrifice Pulk for Franzen's what ifs? That is all I am saying with the trade him now idea. In no way do I want to lose any more kids to washed up vets like we have done before. -

Franzen is a waist of a money and a roster spot. If he is in the lineup on opening day, we will be less some good prospects...and we would have wasted our time with our draft picks. To lose any one of these players to keep Franzen here for the next five years will be a waste. What are you going to do when Frk, AA, Mantha, and Larkin are due up, do you still keep Franzen? Franzen needs to go now or lose the likes of AA and Frk for sure. You need to get off this Franzen love, he is done, over, not worth keeping, especially when it comes to losing valuable prospects. He was the wrong choice and he continues to show that he is horrible. Sure, he had the concussion last January, but how do you expain the previous 5 years of floating around and s***ting on the ice? You cannot explain it any other way than he is done, over, washed up. Time to cut ties with him now, either LTIR or trade him. No way is losing ANYONE to cap issues worth keeping Franzen for. If Holland does this, then this franchise is doomed... f*** Franzen Anyhow, if the WIngs plan on moving forward and not losing young players for nothing or being forced to trade them, there has to be casualties at the NHL level. Q, E, K and Franzen, and maybe Smith are ALL great candidates to move in order to secure the kids arrival the next few seasons... -

On the contrary, it was rumored at the trade deadline that Toronto was willing to take on Franzen's contract in the Phanuef trade, but Holland still didn't want to trade Mantha or his #1 pick in that deal. So it is entirely possible you could see Franzen moved to clear cap space and roster space for our prized prospects running out of exemptions... -

Looking in the other thread where Jesusberg listed the kids with their exemption year, we are in for some decisions the next three seasons! Next season for sure with the D kids, but Frk snuck up on us, don't know much about Nedomlel or Tvrdon, but still...then the next year with Mantha and AA up, those are huge decisions there! will there be room here? How long do we string along with the likes of MIller and Helm and Abby with these kids coning along? You have to figure Larkin will be in the NHL before he is out of exemptions as well...Sheesh! Trades will most definitely have to be made! You almost HAVE to dump Franzen and Ericsson just so you aren't forced to trade you prospect or lose them. I think any one of Frk, AA, Mantha, Larkin deserves to be here over Franzen when the time comes. No way I'd trade or waive any of them to keep Franzen on the roster. No way. -

I agree. If someone would take Franzen's contract, like a team wanting to get to the cap floor, that would help out bigtime! Then if he gets healthy enough one day, he would be a bonus to them. Trade Fraznen and Ericsson, then lose Q next season, trade K, then you have room for most your kids! This season: Kronwall - Green Dekeyser - Quincey Smith - Kindl Marchenko/Jensen Next Season: Kronwall - Green Dekeyser - Marchenko Smith - XO Jensen/Sproul Still would be tight with the kids. Might have to deal one of them before they are out of exemptions...just not enough room. For sure though, dumping Franzen and E makes the most Cap sense, considering Q is UFA next summer. Jurco will score 10... -

Pulks will get signed, he has no significant NHL time to negotiate with, so it shouldn't be an issue. Aubry, not worried about. I don't think he will make here in Detroit anyhow, I think his time has passed, at least here in Detroit. Maybe he also can be a small piece in a package elsewhere. If they plan to trade K or Q to relieve cap, then Aubry and or Jurco especially can sweetin the deal a smidge to upgrade the draft pick or other prospect coming our way. -

Sounds like he only wants a year so he isn't stuck in a sub par contract and also so he can try to have that breakout year and get even better offers...perhaps from other teams. Other than the fact that he wants to sign here or 1 year, under a million to prove he is worth more, sounds like he would.ve loved to go to arbitration, and that he really doesn't care if he plays here or another team. I think Holland wants to give him a multi-year contract because he has other (more important) players to deal with next season and doesn't want to bother with Jurco for another straight year. I am all for keeping Jurco on this team, but only signing him to 1 year presents a problem or next off season. What if he has a breakout year and scorers 25 goals? Now we are forced to giving him something closer to market value, all with having to give DD, Mraz, Abby, Sheahan and Helm significant raises, Ferraro another contract as well a Callahan. And if those two see significant time in the NHL, they will probably get a raise. I understand that if Jurco signs for at least 2 season, and has a 25 goal season, we get him at a HUGE discount for the next season, but then, if he has another 25 goal season, he may get even a bigger raise, so he has to look at it that way. Almost like giving the Wings a extra season to help get the other guys re-signed even if he makes a bit less or that second season in order to help. I understand he wants to have that breakout season, but it could also backfire, he could sign the 1 year and only have stats like the last season...which of course would hurt his plan to get a big contract after this year. I think, if Holland cannot secure him to at least 2 years, then maybe Jurco should be in that trade package that helps free up salary. I like him, and I think he may be well under Blashill, but it is for the better of the team next offseason to have one less contract to negotiate and big raise to hand out. Come on Jurco, just take a 2 year deal to help bridge these contracts, then after 2 seasons on much improved play, you will get paid. It would actually work out or him more if he took a 2 year deal for less and scored 40-50 points each year, he'd get a bigger raise than if he just had one season of 40-50. He may have that one good season, sign a 4 year deal in the $2M-$3M range, then become a Nyquist type player and then be under paid. Just never know. -
thanks! Forgot Jensen wasn't out of exemptions.

what am I worried about, we'll have plenty of cap room when Howard gets traded and Coreau comes up to backup Mrazek...it will be funny when there's that one night where Petr just can't get in the grove and Coreau comes in relief and Kenny says, referring to Blashill "...he went to Jared!" re: Ericsson, hasn't it been said in the Patrick Sharp trade thread that Dallas now has a hole on D? Maybe Nill will take one of his boys from us, eh? Get it done, Kenny! -

For sure, Holland has had a stellar off season compared to the past few years for sure! I just hate losing guys for free. I am not a big Andersson fan and wouldn't lose any sleep if he wasn't on the WIngs, but at least get a 7th round pick for him, now you won't even get that because 29 other teams know you are cap strapped and won't offer you jack. Call me kooky, but I like Ferraro, he showed a lot of heart in his few games and playoffs, and that doesn't grow on trees, someone will get him and he will be great for them in a role that he should be with us. I just don't like developing a kid for 4-5 years and losing him for nothing...
