10/4 GDT : Red Wings 3 at Hurricanes 2 (OT)

Quincey will be our downfall....waste of space...worst Holland trade ever!

Who will be LGW's whipping boy this season?

So long as they are on this team, Cleary and Quincey will be my whipping boys...along wih the occasional jab at Franzen. Bertuzzi and Sammy won't be healthy enough, long enough to become a whipping boy... BTW, Helm is done. Just my opinion...

    Wings recall Mrazek

Mistake.... Mrazek needs playing time instead of riding the pine...Coreau is the prototypical backup at this juncture...

9/21 Pre-Season GDT : Boston Bruins at Red Wings, 7:00 EST

I was looking forward to watching Ouellet, Sproul and Jarnkrok....DAMN! ...was at work for last game, it was on the TV there, but only got a chance to see about 5 mins. I did see my boy Danny Diesel's goal though! Awesome! This guy will be here 20 years, mark my words! No way he leaves on his own or the Ilitch family trades him...

    Canadian Olympic Jerseys Leaked?

So, it's obvious the same company is designing these things...they should be fired...actually the person or committee that selected the ones to be used should be fired...Detroit City Council could have made a better decision than these! Both the US and Canada jersey's are atrocious...epic, epic fail.

Flames hire Brian Burke as president of hockey operations.

...because Burkie did such a bang up job in Toronto...maybe ol' Dion will be a Flame again soon...

What forward is the Red Wings X Factor?

Flip wasn't all that bad... he was good enough to keep in 08' when Columbus wanted him for Fedorov's return, who, in my mind, would have been the X-Factor in 2009 for us to repeat instead of losing in 7 games... I picked Alfie, I think when Babcock assembles to line of Alfie, Z and Franzen that it is going to be great. Franzen just may top 30 goals this season playing with Z and Alfie...
  9. I remember back on the day my mother asked me what name I wanted on my jersey.....are you ready for this???? #14 - Miroslav Frycer..... WTF was I thinking!!!! A whole 23 games played for Detroit....ugh!
  10. Great Deal! Now....do my trade Kenny! Get Sammy off the books, then trade Emmerton, Quincey and Monster to the Island for Visnovsky and a pick. Bring up Coreau. Leaves $2.6M (roughly) in cap space, plus the roster is down to 14 FWDs. sorry, I know this isn't a line thread, but here is my October healthy roster after my trade... FORWARDS Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($5.500m) Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) / Stephen Weiss ($4.900m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Gustav Nyquist ($0.950m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m) / Tomas Tatar ($0.840m) Drew Miller ($1.350m) / Joakim Andersson ($0.733m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.800m) Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) / Jordin Tootoo ($1.900m) / DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Lubomir Visnovsky ($4.750m) Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) / Danny DeKeyser ($1.350m) Jakub Kindl ($2.400m) / Brendan Smith ($1.263m) Brian Lashoff ($0.725m) / \ GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($5.292m) Jared Coreau ($0.925m) ------ (these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,814,545; BONUSES: $3,192,500 CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $2,677,955

Who do we Unload, reload on before the season starts?

You most definitely re-sign Nyquist.... Now, without Brunner and Cleary you still have 16 forwards and are at least $1.5M over the cap... The clear choice is dump Samuelsson somehow (that would solve the cap issue but not the roster one.) You would still have 15 forwards, you would still need to trade someone. With the thinking that Helm will be healthy and ready to go, this is what I do: Choice #1: Get rid of Sammy (either LTIR or waive or buyout....something) then trade Emmerton for a pick... Choice #2: (if Sammy cannot be moved) You trade Eaves for a pick or future's (He and Miller are the same player.) Then (here is where it's gets creative for me!) Trade Emmerton, Quincey and Monster to the Island for Visnovsky and a pick. You call up Coreau to back up Howard. You dump your two forwards, an overpaid defenseman (who is not worth his contract) and a useless backup to dump $7.0M roughly in salary, then you acquire that legit 2nd pairing defenseman and bring up a solid, YOUNGER, backup who will have to split time with Mrazek and probably Patterson down there anyhow...thus adding roughly $5.7M in salary, giving you $1.3M in cap space... ...of course, even if you could dump Sammy on LTIR, I still like the trade. Hell, I'd make that trade even if Sammy and Bert were LTIR! Quincey is not worth his salary, he is a UFA next summer, he won't take a paycut and no way will Holland pay him more than $4M! Trade him now and get something in return for him! Monster did nothing to prove he was a good backup last season and Emmerton is expendable with Helm healthy. edit: ugh....after re-reading my post, I forgot about the -$1.5M in cap space I started with, so even with the trade, I am still $200,000 in the hole....come on Kenny, get that brain working! I am spent.
  12. Yep, get Nyquist under contract, shed ourselves of Sammy and we'll have plenty of cap space...now roster space is a whole other subject! Even if we dumped Sammy, there will still be 15 forwards...

Shawn Burr has passed away per Bill Roose

Sad...very sad. Shawn was one of three Red Wings who I wished were still around for the 1997 Cup win...Him, Bob Probert and Dino Ciccarelli. Two of those guys have left this world now. Both FAR too soon! RIP Shawn Burr. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOVJF5SYO4c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEN6_QOkVTw Shawn had Leukemia, Acute Leukemia more specifically. He had a bone marrow donor match ready and was awaiting the procedure. Acute Leukemia is no joke, back in 1994, my Aunt was diagnosed with it and was admitted to the hospital on April 1st, she was dead on April 30th. She was 30 years old. Below is a video talking about his battle with the disease and the efforts he made to our community to bring awareness to us and to ask us to become donors. It's as easy as getting a swab at the dentist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrcODuZMCUo again, RIP Shawn, you were a helluva guy!

    Brunner Contract Talks

The team already has 7 NHL ready defensemen. Quincey is more than replaceable with Lashoff and the emergence of Kindl as made Q expendable. I know he won't get bought out, but I certainly hope he does not get re-signed next season, unless for some odd reason he grows leaps and bounds and has a career year...if he is here this season, I hope he improves to become that guy we hoped for when we traded for him.

    Shootouts

2 for a win, 0 for a loss, 1 for a tie...hey, there a concept! Lets get back to tradition, stop rewarding a team for getting beat...the NHL has to be the only sport that has two sets of regulations for regular season and playoffs.

    Red Wings popularity in Detroit/Michigan

First of all, listening to 97.1 is the first problem, especially Valenti and Foster. Sencond, the NFL and MLB will always be #1 and #2 in the country and any state, because more kids pay it growing up, not because it is better, but it is easier to assemble a neighborhood cast of players and run around a field than it is to rent ice, gather enough players to offset the ungodly ice fee PLUS find ONE, let alone TWO goalies that actually know how to pay the position good enough to make shooting at him/her fun, PLUS hope that everyone has all the required equipment. That doesn't make playing baseball or football more fun, just easier to do as a kid growing up. That is why the NHL is what it is in Canada, they have backyard rinks and most kids have the hand me down equipment from big brother or dad. It's just easier to play football and baseball as a kid here. Now that being said, those of us who were fortunate enough to grow up playing hockey, for one reason or another, will ALWAYS rank the NHL #1 over the NFL or MLB, but don't get me wrong, I was very, VERY ecstatic in 1984 and for the Tigers the last two times they went to the Series. I was the same way in 1989 and 1990 and 2004 for the Pistons and I am very excited every year to see if the Lions can actually become something. I will never hold ANY of those Championships or future ones higher than ANY of our Cups, or future Cups, but for that one moment in time, when the Tigers/Pistons/Lions ever win a championship again, I will take my attention away from the Wings to celebrate and enjoy. I feel the same about College sports as well. Hockey #1, then the rest on a winning basis. But the majority of the population, same with professional sports, would take Football, then basketball in the NCAA before College Hockey or even College Baseball. That is what makes us NHL fans special. We don't follow the crowd and do what everyone else does. Sure, we all grew up playing Football and Baseball as well, but it was something about Hockey that we fell in love with and it shows to this day. I love the NHL more than anything, I would chose the Winter Classic of ANY bowl game on January 1st. Being honest though, if it came down to watching the Red Wings play a regular season game on Superbowl Sunday if the Lions were there, I'd have to watch the Lions...Same would go with the Tigers in the World Series...now the Pistons in a game 7 of the Finals would probably lose out to the Wings, but I would switch back and forth...

    Shootouts

I never understood rewarding a team for losing...it would probably never happen, but a team could lose all 82 games in OT or shootout, have 82 points and squeak into the playoffs as a 8th seed...a winless team in the playoffs...nice. Just get rid of the shootout and the 1 loser point.

NHL Participation at Sochi cleared by IIHF

I didn't read all the pages, but am I in the minority when I say, I cannot stand NHL players in the Olympics? (same for NBA) This is an amateur tournament and there are TONS of U18 kids out there from EVERY country participating that would make this an exciting tournament. Even a more fair tournament. Just look at all the World Juniors Tourneys every year these are great exhibitions of amateur talent. We do not need a 40 year old Alfredsson playing for Sweden when the Olympics were set up to be Amatuer. Sure, back in the day when Russia would send their professionals to the games, there was an argument for Canada and US doing the same, but now, the U18 kids all around the world are on par wit each other and I think would be more entertaining to watch than a bunch of all-star games in two weeks...just my opinion, Yet he is an American citizen...hmmm....

    Brunner Contract Talks

I like how the Brunner Contract Talks thread got turned into a Tootoo debate! Is Tootoo the next Fedorov? You know how it always seems that Fedorov got brought up in every thread for a long time? Anyhow, regarding Brunner, do we know if he has even gotten any interest from teams out there? I heard the New Jersey rumor, but has anything else come up? I really hope he comes to his senses and just takes another contract from Detroit. I know that would require losing a couple of players (and that is where the Tootoo debate came from I am sure) but if losing Sammy or Emmerton and keeping Brunner is the option, then I will take that. When it comes down to Tootoo, I definitely believe he has a place on this team. Again, if losing Emmy where the option, then I am all for it. Plus, when it comes to value around the NHL and what type of draft pick or future consideration each one would bring, Emmy has more value. On this team, after Andersson is signed, Emmy is redundant. I just looked on capgeek and Holland has his work cut out for him. Our updated cap space is ONLY just a tick over $1M...Nyquist and Andersson MUST be signed and I would still like to see Brunner come back. But at the very least Nyquist and Andersson are going to cost us around $3M combined. So, that means another buyout and a trade or waiver for a couple of players. My choices would be Sammy (if possible,) Quincey, Emmerton. Bottom line for me, I would love to have Brunner back here (for the right price) and wouldn't mind sacrificing the above mentioned to do so...

List of Lidstrom's defence partners over the years

99-00 Was probably still Murphy. Lids average 28 mins and Murph was 21 minutes. Chelios (25 mins) and Duchesne (21 mins) were up there too, but I don't think neither of them played too much even strength with Lids.

    Alfredsson and the #11

...forgot that Sheahan wore it, but even so, until him, it's been since Jason Woolley that anyone has worn it? It's a great number, not like it's an odd ball one...I remember Holmstrom wearing it and IMO, he should have kept it. Looked and still looks much better than 96...maybe 15 is reserved for the call-up position and only used until the player chooses another number... anyhow, Alfie in #11 is a given, Weiss should take #29 (if #15 is Sheahan's...)
  25. Nyquist and Andersson ARE the priorities... I think even Brendan Morrow is ahead of Dan Cleary on the to do list. Dan Cleary is about as high on that list as walking into a room 20 minutes after someone farts and billowing through the waft of stench...
