I would also think that is Holland had a target that would potentially cost him more than Datsyuk or Zetterberg per year, he would probably be up front with the both of them with his intentions and I am sure if they felt that they were informed of this, they wouldn't have any issues with it, especially if it betters the team.... besides, last off season Holland offered Suter a contract that would have been more than Dats or Z's anyhow, so its not like they have to be the highest paid, but I have a feeling Holland informed them that he was going after Suter with a contract that would pay him that much. Again, if they felt part of the process and I think they would have no issues with making less than someone on the team...

Yes to this! ^ Buy out Bert and Sammy, let Fil and Cleary walk....
-
...and still only 6 points in the playoffs...in 14 games AND a team low -7... I don't what I am thinking....
-
Ok...Franzen slappies will be just that. Keep on wanting him here. Every year I give him plenty of chances to win me over, every year he fails. This year more than others... that pathetic poof shot at the goal against Chicago defines his status in my book.... You will always love him, I will never. If he never played here again, I would be the happiest Wings fan in the world.
-
That may be, but I do remember Kovi being out with them as well, maybe on the PP, because that is what I pictured in my head when I typed that in the first place...
-
One day you will realize that Franzen is declining rapidly and is pretty much useless in between the 5 game stretches he decides to play....
-
Whoops, I thought maybe they played together over in Russia prior to the NHL...I guess other than the Olympics and some other International play, they haven't really played too much more together. I do remember watching the last Olympics with a line of Kovalchuk - Datsyuk - Malkin. That was pretty amazing to watch, but I guess I was off base a bit there...
-
That would be a nice thread subject too....What would you give up for Kovalchuk? You mentioned the impending retirement of Broduer, they could bite at Mrazek too... (not straight up of course...) edit: in all honesty, they do need some cap relief...they only have 6 forwards and 6 defensemen signed with $26M in Capspace....$26M sounds like a lot, but it could disappear quickly when you have to sign 8 forwards and a D...that is an average $2.8M per player, and it todays market, that is a lot of average to below average players or tons of prospects!
-
I also would like to know what is the MOST a player can make under this CBA? It's my opinion that Dastyuk will get $7.5M...and if Holland was able to land a superstar upcoming UFA, both Dats and Z should have no problem with him getting $10M if he is going to net 50 goals and at the same time, allowing Z and Dats to top 100 points...plus make our chances of a Cup that much better...
-
You aren't an idiot...
-
He will sign the extension ONLY if he feels he never wants to leave Pit. There are plenty of GM's out there that are more than willing to give him the most a player can make under the CBA. If that is $10M, he could EASILY get $10M from a contender too. With the right moves and trades, Holland could give him $10M. He'd have to be happy in Pit, so happy that he makes less than most players he is better than around the league for the rest of his career... I am not so sure Malkin will be happy making less than Crosby, considering he is better than him and isn't one hit away from a noodle brain...

I wish we had the 36th pick overall....if I am doing my math correctly, I belive we had the 48th in the 2nd. There are 30 picks in the 1st round, then add 18 more...I realize you just added 18 and 18, but I do believe we have the 48th. Unless we made a trade that I am unaware of!

Speaking of Talented Young D Prospects: Not even mentioning the guys who will be in the NHL next season, just look at this list! Ryan Sproul: 6'4" 200lbs. Right Handed 20 Mattias Backman: 6'2" 176lbs. Left Handed 20 Xavier Ouellet: 6'1" 190lbs. Left Handed 19 Nick Jensen: 6'1" 193lbs. Right Handed 22 Alexi Marchenko: 6'2" 183lbs. Right Handed 21 Adam Almquist: 5'11" 174lbs. Left Handed 22 Max Nicastro: 6'3" 225lbs. Right Handed 23 (This guy could see some NHL time soon! He is huge too!) Richard Nedomial: 6'5" 231lbs. Left Handed 19 (Geez! at 19 he is a beast!) Ben Marshall: 5'9" 179lbs. Left Handed 20 (smallest of all the D prospects, but has already broke into the top 25 despite being drafted in 2010) James De Haas: 6'4" 205lbs. Left Handed 19 (Already in the top 25 and climbing fast, draft just last year! He is growing like a weed!) Mike McKee: 6'4" 245lbs. Left Handed 19 (This guy everyone is excited to see! Huge, HUGE man and only 19!) If Holland could add Steve Santini to this mix we could possibly have THE BEST group of D prospects in the NHL. Steve Santini: 6'3" 205lbs. Right Handed 18 (tons of room to grow! Will probably be 225lbs. before he would see the NHL) I know the thread says circa 2018, but this group of D is going to take us into the 2020's! I am excited! ....and Canadian...

STEVE SANTINI D 6'2 207 R Mar. 7/95 USA U-18 USNTDP FREDERIK GAUTHIER C 6'5 210 L Apr. 26/95 Rimouski QMJHL VALENTIN ZYKOV RW 6'0 210 R Apr. 15/95 Baie-Comeau QMJHL KERBY RYCHEL LW 6'1 200 L Oct. 7/94 Windsor OHL JOSHUA MORRISSEY D 6'0 182 L Mar. 28/95 Prince Albert WHL MADISON BOWEY D 6'1 200 R Apr. 22/95 Kelowna WHL ANTHONY MANTHA F 6'4 190 L Sept. 16/94 Val-d'Or QMJHL 1st round, if ANY of these are available I would love it if Holland took one of them! It's funny how we are all about size, and all over Mantha, but he is one of the lightest of all these guys! For some reason, I a gravitated towards Zykov. I just think he is the type of player Holland is going to take. If Santini falls to the second round I would love to add him to our impressive list of prospect D. I love the local kid McCarron, but I think his stock is rising and even if he went in the 2nd, he probably won't be around for us to draft. NOT UNLESS Holland trades Filppula for a 2nd rounder (maybe to Dallas.) That would give us the #40 and #48 in the 2nd round. McCarron and Santini would be a HIGHLY successful 2nd round! In the 3rd, Fasching would be a steal I think... if Holland was able to deal Fil for that extra 2nd and our first three rounds looked like this: 1st: Mantha (or Zykov)(or the other guys I listed) 2nd: McCarron, Santini 3rd: Fasching I would roll around all day in my kibbles and bits praising Hollands name!

Nope.....I think is just a tweet by Dreger mentioning that if they lost in 4 or 5 games moving Malkin may be an option due to his pending UFA after next season. So, this fun little thread was created for us to ponder what if? And what you would think would get Malkin in a Detroit Uniform... Hey, it seems far fetched that Malkin would be traded, but its not like its out of the realm of possibility. I never thought they would trade Staal either. I thought for sure that he would be a Penguin longer than Malkin if the choice had to be made... I would love Malkin in a Wings uni, I just have no clue on what it would cost...if we were staying in the West the cost would be less I am sure, but since we are moving East (albeit not in the same division as Pit) they price would be steeper...

I sure wish Shero was interested in Franzen...throw him into my trade proposal and the deal gets done....again IF Shero wanted Franzen, but who the Hell wants Franzen? Nill? For Shirts and Goggles: to PIT : Johan Franzen, Kyle Quincey, Petr Mrazek, Tomas Tatar, 2014 1st round Pick to DET : Evgeni Malkin, Tomas Vokoun, 2014 1st round Pick Calling Mr. Holland, Mr. Shero, Get R Dun!!!! (honestly, I think that is a bit overpayment....but hey, its all for what if's anyhow!)

Nothing guarantee's anyone a Cup. If having the best superstar team meant winning the Cup all the time, we would have won in in 2003 as well as 2004. BUT acquiring this superstar would most definitely increase our scoring ability and thus bring us that much closer to glory again.

I would replace Tatar with Nyquist if had to be, but not Dekeyser. I would most definitely replace Q with Ericsson. I chose those two because of the obvious Cap relief on our end. Signing then trading Nyquist would be more cap relief (which we would need the following year) than trading Tatar. While we would miss Nyquist initially, our prospect pool is very deep with Frk, Jarnkrok, Athanasiou, Jurco and whoever we take with the 18th pick this year. I would even part with some other prospects like Sheahan or Ferraro or Pulkkinen...as long as the 8 year deal was done for Malkin. I would not do a trade for him if it meant having to deal with UFA next July....I would rather stay status quo and try to sign him then....
-
He played 42 out of 48 games...and like I said, once they got a role, Babcock didn't want to change to mojo...

! Me too! I though for a moment Eva returned after turning into a Flames fan when Hudler singed there....

*DISCLAIMER* This capgeek mockup is purely fantasy and made to go along with the "What Would You Give Up For Malkin" thread. I will do my best to make things a realistic as possible. I am not going to make everyone happy with this post, nor do I intend to. Some of you may fall out of your chairs laughing, but as long as you keep in mind that I am acknowledging that I know that this will NEVER happen, it is just a mock up for entertainment purposes and to intrigue debate and creative chatting back and forth. That being said, here I go. First I will start with the subtractions from the Red Wings via UFA, buyouts, trade, waivers... Val Filppula - Walk via UFA Dan Cleary - Walk via UFA Drew Miller - Walk via UFA Todd Bertuzzi - Compliance Buyout Mikel Samuelsson - Complinace Buyout Jonas Gustavsson - Waived to GR ($525,000 Caphit, unless someone claims him) Kyle Quincey - Traded to Pit in Malkin deal Tomas Tatar - Traded to Pit in Malkin deal 2014 1st round pick - Trade to Pit in Malkin Deal Petr Mrazek - Traded to Pit in Malkin Deal Corey Emmerton - Traded for low draft pick or Future Considerations Acquired: Malkin - For Quincey, Mrazek, Tatar, 2014 1st round pick Vokoun - For Quincey, Mrazek, Tatar, 2014 1st round pick Ryder - Via UFA Re-signed: Joakim Andersson Jakub Kindl Damien Brunner Brenden Smith Gustav Nyquist Pavel Datsyuk - 4 years ($7.5M Cap hit) Evgeni Malkin - 8 years ($10M cap hit)(not sure what the ceiling is for what a player can make against the Cap) CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER My Custom Lineup FORWARDS Michael Ryder ($4.000m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Gustav Nyquist ($1.110m) Justin Abdelkader ($1.800m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m) / Damien Brunner ($2.250m) Calle Jarnkrok ($0.900m) / Joakim Andersson ($1.110m) / Jordin Tootoo ($1.900m) Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) / DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) Danny DeKeyser ($1.350m) / Jakub Kindl ($1.250m) Carlo Colaiacovo ($2.500m) / Brendan Smith ($1.110m) Brian Lashoff ($0.725m) / GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($5.292m) Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m) OTHER Buyout: Mikael Samuelsson ($0.000m) Buyout: Todd Bertuzzi ($0.000m) Claimed off Waivers: Jonas Gustavsson ($0.000m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,059,545; BONUSES: $1,010,000 CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,250,455 Now this shows a 22 man roster, if Emmerton ($533,333) needed to be retained, that would work to considering the $1.25M available cap space. Also, for the 2014-2015 season reflecting Malkin and Datsyuk new cap hit, some things will have to be done to create more space, hopefully the Cap would go up a bit too because we are adding $2.1M in salary with those two. We would be losing Cola's salary ($2.5M) but you also have to re-sign Vokoun & Dekeyser and bring up another defender to be the #6/7 guy. You could also replace Eaves $1.2M by not re-signing him and using one of the "kids" in GR as the 13th guy and most of those guys are sub $1M... I am confident that it would all work out. I sure wish Holland had the guts to do something this radical, but damn that would be a lot of moves...and a miracle!

I agree, its all fun and games. That being said, I never thought of the Mrazek angle. They definitely need a direction to go with their goaltending. Fleury s*** the bed, and Vokoun is not really someone who is going to be their starter for years to come. I am good with giving up Q, and the 2014 pick. I do think though it would take more than Sheahan to sweeten the deal. I wouldn't mind giving up Tatar or Jurko and I still think that if they could do some buyouts along with this trade, it would open up more money to get a legit 2nd line scorer too. I would also want Vokoun in return to be Jimmy's backup. I would then just waive the Monster. If that involved dealing a player or two more then so be it. Of course it would be much more settling to have a deal in place to re-sign him as soon as the deal was done (just like when the traded for Hasek.) Getting Pav inked, making to trade and getting Malkin inked would have to be to way it is done. We cannot chance losing him after one season to a higher bidder. Shero could either sign him to the 8 year $80M deal and then trade him, or he could trade him to us and we could. Either way, this guy has to be paid that much. So, in my Scenario: to Pittsburgh : Kyle Quincey, Petr Mrazek, Tomas Tatar, 2014 1st round Pick to Detroit : Evgeni Malkin, Tomas Vokoun (I am going to make up a capgeek with my new roster and post it in the capgeek thread if it all works out money-wise.) I agree Holland probably wouldn't have the nutso's to pull this off. BTW, Holland was not the GM when Shanahan was acquired, but he did do the Hasek deal, so he has done a big deal before....Malkin would for sure solve our Offense problem....
-
Well, they also got on a roll and Babcock didn't make any or very few lineup changes since then also.... Tootoo is an important part of this team. He has a roll and he plays it well. He will get lots of games the upcoming season...
-
The entire Pengwhines team struggled in this series, but they had a respectable playoffs... Malkin scored 16 points in 15 games, not too shabby.

HEY! Trade Franzen for Hossa! Seriously though, I think the trade option is similar to us trading Franzen....it's just too long of a contract that he probably won't be finishing before he retires, and nobody would want to take on that contract considering the penalty they will incur with him retiring early. So much like Franzen, the only two options are to buy him out, or just keep him. The buyout is a possibility for both, but I doubt it happens... But since the OP was posing just a hypothetical question asking "IF" Hossa got bought out, he never said it was going to happen, which is why I laugh at the people who made comments like "get real" "have some sense" "are you dumb?" It was just a hypothetical scenario...my answer is yes, IF Hossa got bought out, I would love to see him back in a Wings uniform. But he is hardly the complete answer to our issues. He would help offensively for sure, but we would need another top 6 scorer IMO to put us in that Stanley Cup Stratosphere and since Hossa wouldn't cost too much money, couples together with some strategic buyouts and a trade or two, we would still have way enough cash to get another $7M player. That being said, I would be very surprised it they do buy him out...but I would love it!
