5 reasons to Love/Hate the Red Wings

Nowhere near the truth... the challenge is still there, name me one...

5 reasons to Love/Hate the Red Wings

Dude, drafting the players, trading assets for players and signing players that every other team had a chance to sign doesn't define the term "BOUGHT A CHAMPIONSHIP!" If you can name me ONE player on that 2002 team that Detroit got into bidding war over or paid an unGodly amount of money to come here and play and I will agree with you. But you can't, so the answer is THEY DID NOT BUY ANYTHING...

5 reasons to Love/Hate the Red Wings

I was waiting for a reason to hate the Wings to be 'They got over a million fans at their parade, we only got 10,000... WAH!' I agree the Joe is old, but hate the team because we out-marketed Disney and copyrighted Hockeytown? Hate us because of 2002? I am sick of hearing that the Wings "bought" the Cup back then... Hasek we traded for, as a matter of fact a 30 goal scorer and a first round pick. Brett Hull, is it our fault he took less money to come here? Hell we didn't even sign him until August 22nd of 2001, nearly 2 months after UFA day... Robitaille, NOBODY wanted, NOT EVEN LA! (much like Modano this year!) Olausson, again NOBODY ELSE WAS INTERESTED IN HIM!!! Chelios we traded Anders Ericsson and a first round pick for WAAAAAAY back in 1999. Larionov was on this team for years... Lidstrom, Yzerman, Fedorov, ALL DRAFT PICKS! Shanahan was traded for in 1996 for Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey AND a first round pick! Jesus H! Now what part of that says we just pulled a New York Yankee's and threw a ton of money at a bunch of free agents and BOUGHT the Stanley Cup!!!?!?!?!? Pure Envy is all it is.... Hate the Wings because they are your rivals, simple. Forget all the other BS excuses and rationalizations!

    Rypien suspended 6 games

Ya, the lawsuit part I wrote would've probably been a bit much, considering I would been thrown in jail myself. The guy was 28 but it quite possibly still his son. I dont care if my son was 8, 28 or 48, he still my son and I would still die for him, so at the very least I would've leaped (fallen) over that rail and threw down (got my ass kicked probably) with him in defense of my son. Blood is Blood, I dont care where you live...

keep an eye on him at the trade deadline or the offseason after Osgood retires.

Players you've always wanted on the Wings

Actually Dave Hanson, the one furthest away did play 11 games for the Detroit Red Wings in 1978-79. http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/hansoda01.html

Kenneth Rucker, a.k.a. "Orange Hat Guy", passed away

...how did the orange hat guy afford all those games? RIP Buddy! Does anyone remember this Detroit Sports Fan Icon?

If this happened to MY son while we were attending? I'd either be in jail right now or the hospital! Let some adult lay his hands on my son! I'd take a bullet to save my kids and Heaven forbid a NHL player thinks just because he is mad he could grab my kid and shake him around? I'd of jumped right over that rail a tried my best to beat this guy down! Then he along with the team/owner/security/arena/city would be sued with the largest lawsuit they have ever seen! There isn't a jury in North America that would convict ME for defending my son from a cracked up, juiced up piece of s*** hockey player. As soon as that player crossed the imaginary line into MY or my sons personal space, I have the right to defend it. I probably would have gotten the worse beat down of my life, but I already said, nothing, not even death, is too much defending my sons... I hope this guy gets 10 games and gets sued.

Illitch "definitely committed" to new downtown arena

I agree as well, even though I know you are using numbers with the consideration of games not selling out every night, I hope that the arena seats at least 24,000. If they (pistons) ever return to the top of the heap and the economy turns up more, imagine the cash generating with 24,000 people 100 times a year? Nice!

Illitch "definitely committed" to new downtown arena

Ya I agree with you! I still like the idea of Delta Centre (I know it has been used in the NBA before, but not anymore.) With Delta Airlines being the major airline in Detroit now, it makes sense. But another one to consider, and this could have a little to do with Grand Rapids being associated with the Wings, how about Meijer Gardens? Here's a few more to chew on: Amway Place Better Made Arena Art Van 1/2 Off Centre () Bing Steel House Belle Tire Hub Deja Vu Centre You have other companies like: Delphi, Dow Chemical, Faygo, Gordon Foods, Guardian Industries (Ironic!), Jiffy Mix, Penske Automotive, Roush Performance, Whirlpool, Ally, Lear, Visteon, Spartan Stores. Then again, Comerica Bank is now headquartered in Dallas, so who knows! I say Illitch should dump Comerica as soon as the contract expires just for being yet another Michigan born company that turned its back on us!

Players you've always wanted on the Wings

I would like to say that these are guys that I would've loved to have on the Wings and along with many other teams, the Wings had a chance to draft them as well. Only because a lot of the names mentioned so far the Wings never had a chance to draft (Crosby, Ovechkin, etc...) and or sign in their prime, so here we go: (and yes I know, the draft is a crap shoot, but this is actually more of a reality than us getting Crosby or Stamkos) 1984: Shayne Corson, Kevin Hatcher, Stephane Richer, Gary Suter 1985: Joe Nieuwendyk 1986: Brian Leetch, Scott Young 1987: Joe Sakic (duh), John LeClair, Theo Fluery 1988: Mark Recchi, Tony Amonte, Rob Blake, Alex Mogilney 1989: You can't really argue with the results of our 1989 draft, but here are a couple I would have rather seen. Instead of Mike Sillenger I would've have like Adam Foote. Pavel Bure instead of Bob Boughner. 1990: A lot of guys from this draft rather than Primeau. Ricci, Jagr, Sydor, Tkachuk, Brodeur, Weight, Zubov. Even though Primeau got us Shanahan, but any of those guys in a Wings sweater would've been great! 1991: Rolston, Naslund, Glen Murray 1992: Peca 1993: Langenbrunner, Brenden Morrison, Demitra 1994: Elias, Drury, Hejduk, Alfredsson, Steve Sullivan 1995: Marc Savard 1996: Chara 1998: Erik Cole 1999: Ryan Miller, Erat 2000: Travis Moen 2001: Patrick Sharp, Tootoo (yes, so do you!) 2002: James Wisniewski 2003: Pavelski 2004: Versteeg 2005: Paul Stastny, Latendresse, Letang 2006: Clutterbuck 2007-2010 kids are way too young to see who turns out, although I would have liked to see Tinordi come here, but Sheahan could work out nicely! I know this is kinda off topic, but these are guys that could've been drafted by Detroit and been on this team. I realize a lot of other teams missed these guys too, and with 4 Cups since 1997, I believe the Wings have done well for themselves. Going back even further: 1971 you can't argue with picking Dionne, but in the 2nd round they passed on Larry Robinson. 1972 they could've had Bob Nystrom. 1973, Rick Middleton. 1974 Tremblay, Trottier. 1975 Doug Jarvis, Dave Taylor. 1976 Brian Sutter. 1977 Mike Bossy, Doug Wilson. 1978 Anton Stastny, McTavish, Al Secord. 1979 Mike Gartner, Rick Vaive, Ray Bourque, Michel Goulet, Mats Naslund, Dale Hunter, Neal Broten, Glen Anderson, Anton Stastny (again, he was drafted the year prior but never signed) I left out Mark Messier, I believe he was property of Edmonton in the WHL or something, if I am worng then, yeah, a ton of teams kicked themselves for that one! 1980 Kurri, Nicholls, Mullen, Larmer, Brent Sutter. 1981 they should've just drafted Chelios to begin with! 1982 Tony Granato, Doug Gilmour. 1983 Hmmmmmmm, this one is interesting, lets break it down by rounds: Round 1 Obviously Round 2 Claude Lemieux instead of Lane Lambert Round 3 Probert Round 4 Esa Tikkenen instead of David Korol Round 5 Klima and Kocur Round 6 Rick Tocchet instead of Chris Pusey Round 7 Christian Ruttu instead of Bob Pierson Round 8 Tommy Albelin instead of Craig Butz Round 9 Brian Noonan instead of Dave Sikorski Round 10 Hasek instead of Grimson Round 11 Blah, after the way Krupp played for us, Jeff Frank was a fine Choice! Round 12 Makarov instead of Charles (Chachi) Chiatto! ...ya ya, nobody is that perfect in drafting players, but this is all in fun, right?!?

Why the hell wont 97.1 ever discuss hockey?

Mike will always say, "we have an open phone, call and talk hockey and they will talk it with you" but you guys are right there are never any show topics that involve a few hours of hockey talk. Valenti is just clueless when it comes to hockey and foster is, well, foster. If I recall if was him back in 1994 saying that the Wings should trade Yzerman (or it was drew sharp, cant tell the difference anyway.) They always say nothing of too big of interest happens to warrant a topic, what about Pav's fight? Sure really not that big of story, but could you imagine if the two quarterbacks at michigan/state got into a fight? Holy hell, it would be a week long topic! Valenti is a loser, Foster is a puppet... This isnt called Football, Baseball, Basketball or even College-Town, its Hockeytown, unfortunately the local media doesn't know enough about the sport to even hold a 2 minute conversation and that is sad...

    Kindl looking good

wow.... didn't realize that the same year Kindl was taken 19th overall, Paul Stastny was taken 44th and Helm was a 5th rounder... anyhow, I have always thought that Kindl was a wasted first round pick, especially one that high, but hopefully he turns those rookie mistakes into something great. It's hard to live up to being a first round pick, its easy to be a 5th rounder... A bunch of folks missed out on Stastny, and the way Helm as been so far in his NHL career, he could've gone in the first round, he's doing much better than Sasha Pokulok...

10/14 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Stars 4

...maybe he is waiting for the "C" before he produces and plays to his contracts worth? With the amount of cash he is making he should be consistantly scoring 100 points AND staying HEALTHY.

Just an observation. How about, should've paid China Doll Franzen less money and gave Hossa the measly $5M he wanted? Just saying, Franzen get hurt way too much. Sure he shows up well rested in the playeoffs, but where did that get us last season? I am just tired of the same guys getting hurt consistantly every season, Franzen, next Kronwall then Zetterberg... Those guys ALWAYS seem to get sidelined for a period of time EVERY season. Lets NOT trade them, but damn, stay freakin healthy for a season...

10/14 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Stars 4

Also, considering all of his injuries, I know when he is in, he is really good, but remember the debate about whether we re-sign Franzen or Hossa? Well, since Franzen looks like a china doll every season, maybe we should've signed Hossa... BTW, another consistent china doll is Kronwall, look for his departure soon... Of course I hope not, but it would be par for course...

...seriously though, what exactly has Zetterberg done since signing his life-contract? Just an observation, but really... How embarrassing for Modo to return to Dallas with his NEW team, the one that wanted him, and nobody else show's up to play!

... both our goalies are bad. Osgood just old, Howard not that great. We sad it all summer, goaltending is gonna be the downfall... Defense needs to step up, but we gotta get that big save now and then, thankfully its only game 4, but I hope the goalies step it up SOON!

I've been wrong before, but one thing I wasn't wrong about last season is Kindl sucks... Totally NOT ready for the NHL, risk waivers? Dunno, isn't anyone down there that would help... Guess we miss Rafalski more than we thought...

Anyone else wonder if the NHL have special rules for the Wings? What happened to eliminating hits to the head with severe penalties? First Duncan Keith elbow against Salei last week, now today's hit to the head of Franzen, WTF is going on, are we allowing hits to the head or what are we stopping them?

Ritola will be traded or waived

look at what? Quincey isn't tearing up the league, but if you mean because Meech was waived this year then ya, but we wouldn't have been able to fit Quincey under the cap anyhow, so they will still both be gone...
  24. LeftWinger

Ritola will be traded or waived

people still bitching about the loss of Quincey and now Ritola? Exactly how many Cups does Quincey have since he was waived? ...and how many do the Wings have since he was waived? Because of the CBA and the Cap (thanks buttman) we cannot keep every last prospect we draft. The only have three years of protection and not all of them can make the club every three years... Will Ritola become a star? Maybe, but he wasn't gonna realize that here, even if he made the club or cleared waivers. Remember all the crying about Mattias being traded? or Fleishman?(SP) Well, again, how many Cups do they have in the time frame since they were dealt? If having Eaves over Ritola gives the Wings a better chance to win the Cup (obviously Holland thinks so) then I am all for it!

Greatest Glass Breaks and Bench hits

Great Vids! I was hoping to see the one where Gary Galley checked Keith Primeau over the boards into the penalty box at the Joe Louis Arena back in the early 90's (before they put glass on the penalty box) edit: Neverind, here it is!
