    Mike Modano signs with Detroit

Capgeek has him at $1.75M with the $500,000 bonus. Does anyone know what the bonus incentive is? Anyhow, I am totally excited to have him here! Note: Capgeek also shows Ritola back on the non-roster players. Hmmmmm, he was on the roster for most of the summer, wnder what that means.... Well, they now have their 13 forwards, they can sign Abby and start him in Rapids, they have $1.6M avail in cap space. Are they happy with the 7 defensmen that are here or are they gonna throw a million at a veteran? I think we burned ourselves out in the Wings persuing Modano thread, we had how many replies and how many pages in that one? This one is going kinda slow considering he has officially signed. BTW, you can update the title to include the details. 1 year, 1.25M with a $500,000 bonus (for what I still dont know.)

    Willie Mitchell

This would be awesome, but he'd have to take a big paycut.... When the season ended I was hoping Holland would persue mitchell, but that was before hudler came back and took away some of the salary cap we had available...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Hey guys, sorry to bring this thread back up from page three, but I feel what I am about to say doesn't warrant it's own thread. My buddy at work (I know here we go with he said she said stuff, thats why I didn't start a new thread) anyhow, his brother is very good friends with Lanny Wadkins the professional golfer, who he said lives in Dallas and is very good friends with Modano (you know where this is going.) Anyway, yes, according to his brother, Wadkins told him that Modano said he is indeed signing with Detroit, they are just ironing out the details. I have no reason to not believe my buddy, he's been right on several occasions. That being said, take this as you may, but he hasnt been wrong before (not that he is psychic) but knows some folks, who know folks. (He knew Chelios was being traded here, and Hatcher signing here to name a couple.) But, as this is all just he said, that he said, that he said, so.... Just thought maybe if there is substance to this, I should mention it... (sorry again to drum up this older thread.)

Watch what you eat at Detroit Area Pro Sporting Events

was at a Tigers games early this month and it was VERRRRRY hot, anyway, someone was ordering a hot dog from the guy in the stands and while he was bending over preparing the dog, well, yea, sweat was dripping off his nose onto the dog.... (not just one drip, but a number of them) :puke:
  6. Wow! Just WOW! I love being able to show stats and debunk everything about someone's post. talk about homerism... Lets Compare, last season... Zetterberg & Toews: Zetterberg 74 games, 70 points, Toews 76 games 68 points, pretty even, yet has Toews ever been considered a Selke candidate or been talk about as one of if not the best two-way player in the NHL? No.... Edge Zetterberg Datsyuk & Kane: Not even a comparison. Kane is dynamic, but Datsyuk is magical. Plus, how many Selke's? Thanks again Patty, see you in a few years. Edge: Datsyuk Franzen & Sharp: Since Franzen only played 27 games, this is a hard comparison, but prorate his 21 points in 20 games and he could've finish leading this team in scoring with at least 30 goals. Sharp is good, 66 points in 82 games is impressive, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Franzen turns into a monster in the playoffs. Edge: Franzen Hudler & Hossa: With my well known hatred for Hudler, I am gonna give the edge to Hossa, but knowing what Hudler did the year prior and was only 2 points behing Hossa in that same playoff year, I am not sure which one I'd rather have. Sure I would love to have Hossa back, but it is kind of comforting that the Hawks were his second choice behind Detroit to sign long term. (damn you cap!) Edge : Hossa Filppula & Bolland: These guys are pretty even, both missed a portion of the season, Flip played a few more games and outscored Bolland, but I will call this a draw. Cleary & Brouwer: Again, stat wise pretty even. Again, the playoffs is where he tends to step it up. Brouwer is only 2 seasons in, so who knows if he'll develope more or stay the same. Edge: Brouwer (simply because of age and potential) ...you actually want to compare defense? Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart and Kronwall are perhaps the best top 4 defensmen in the league. Sure, hawks top 4 are younger, but more skilled? MAYBE faster, but guarantee when it comes to punishing hits and Hockey smarts, Detroit has the edge hands down. Dude, Campbell is a pylon and a waste, get over him... Neimi & Howard. Neimi, Stanley Cup. Howard 37 wins Calder runner up. Anyone can have a lucky Cup run (Cam Ward.) Was Neimi a Conn Smythe consideration? Nope... So if we are comparing just Stanley Cup wins, then throw in Chris Osgood, 3 cups, PLUS a Conn Smythe runner up to Zetterberg. Since Neimi and Howard basically played their first full seasons last year and Howard blew him away regular season, I will call it even because Neimi won the Cup... Sorry dude and since you've lost half of your Cup depth and Detroit gained (as much as I don't like him) Hudler, I will have to give the edge to Detroit for next year... The stats dont lie. We'll never know who would've prevailed since we didn't go head to head in the playoffs, but hopefully we will this season!
  7. This would all be so much better if they hadn't won the Cup... Hockey is a business, players are shipped from one team to another without even blinking, it's kinda like sacificing your bishop for their queen. It's all about money. Bottom Line, that's it. If they hadn't won, this wold sting them all that much more, but since they gambled, won and now are losing some key pieces, they aren't that worried. They do have a core signed to build around, if they get the Stanley Cup Neimi, then they're in good shape, but if they get the Neimi that has been throughout his career, they're in trouble. Neimi NOR Huet are Stanley Cup goalies, just played great at the right time. When Neimi returns to his normal form, the "fans" will be calling for his head. (Nah, they'll just be chanting Detroit Sucks, it's hard for them to memorize more than one phrase at a time...) They should run a promotion in Chicao with Toews' face in a golden ring, saying we won they cup, but thanks the the cap, sorry thee..thee.thee.th...thee....that's all folks!

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

I would'nt doubt if Helm and Abby are waiting to sign until after Modano. Holland knows how much they'll be paid, I am sure if they weren't happy they'd file for arbitration or be signing offers somewhere else (can they if they were given qualifying offers?) Anyhow, Helm & Abby will be in uniform next season, Abby will prolly start in a Griffins uni, but he'll be our injury call up. Last I read he would decide by the 1st, now it's the 5th? Sure is taking his time, but whatever... Camp, right around the corner!!!

He'll wait and wait then sign in Detroit for $1.5M...

Special Olympics? Domi always looks Cro-Magnon. Hey is that Captain Lou in the background playing with his rubber bands?

    Probert Pictures

Abso-freakin-lutely there are! Volume 1 and 2, I have both of them and as described above they look pretty much homemade, but man! They cover fights from Adirondack ( I remember the annoucer calling them Pro-Bear (like his name was french) and Ko-Kur.) all the way up to Proberts final fights in Detroit including the Domi "champioship belt" fights and the Troy Crowder saga! I remember when Crowder tagged Probie and pretty much beat everyone up in the NHL until he met a kid named Darin Kimble in Quebec, Kimble beat the crap out of Crowder, sensing that he may be what they need to counter Probert, St. Louis traded for Kimble, giving up Herb Raglan, Tony Twist and Andy Rymsha. Well his first game against Detroit, sure enough he was sent out there to "Counter" Probie, since Probie had gotten whooped by Crowder and Crowder got whooped by Kimble, St. Louis was rubbing their hands together in anticipation, well, Probert beat this guy so bad he finally switched to the left and looked over at the ref like are you gonna step in and stop this carnage, before I kill him?

Trade idea between Wings & Hawks

I agree, but unfortunately the odds of getting Sharp are worse than me winning the lottery... Especially since it seems like our odds of getting Mike are dwindling as well, but hey, they offered Maltby a contract, soya never know!

Picture in need of a caption.

Looks like the little girl is protecting her cup more than he is protecting his. The quotes are from the little girl... "He don't look too happy with his cup of juice, he sure the F$$K ain't sippin off mine!" OR "Keep your hands off MY cup Porky!"

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

this is getting absurd, of course more teams are going to contact him, nobody wants Detroit to win again, so as soon as they all found out that it was Detroit most likely going to get him, they all started calling...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

The only way he becomes a ****** in my mind, is if he signs somewhere else. Why? Because had he not said its Detroit or retirement then there wouldn't be that sentiment, but since he said that and if he winds up in Minnesota or San Jose, then most of the fans would feel stabbed. Not that he has to sign here, it is his life and decision, but then he shouldn't say what he said about this being the only place he'd play...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Well, I never expected the decision to take even this long of time (although its been only a few days,) I hope it doesn't drag on too much longer. Sure he has to decide if he wants to play another season, and I guess its a hard decision for him, but from my low income point of view it looks simple, either dont play and make nothing or play and make another million dollars and possibly win another Cup. I know Holland is gonna give him whatever time he wants, but Mike, just sign it, please, or come out and say you're retiring. Just make a decision so the entire Red Wings nation can exhale...
  17. This is good news. I have not seen Smith play, but I have seen Kindl play, it wasn't too impressive, but could have been jitters. I hope Smith does well, its about time one of our actual "KIDS" make this club, not spend 5 years in GR then come up when they have no options left. I hope he makes a great impression (along with Kindl.)

    Ritola, Miller or Eaves?

Yes, Abby has GR eligibility left, if we face cap or roster issues, he will be sent down, but I do believe Ritola will be the odd man out with Draper being the 13th forward...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Isn't Mike Modano the highest scoring American born player EVER? I think he has even more points than Brett Hull. My point is, Brett Hull came to us when he was 37 and played here until he was 39. He NEVER had the wheels Modano HAS. He was pretty one dimensional (until he came here, and he was still sub-par defensively.) How bad did that work out? Listen guys, like I said earlier, he is not here to be our savior, so that right there is lifting a lot of pressure off of him. Even last year everyone in Dallas looked to Modano to win games for them, he couldn't do that from the 4th line leftwing position! He will have a more important role here sure, but he has a hell of a lot better top 6 ahead of him than he did in Dallas, plus the prospective line-mates of Cleary and Hudler is gonna give him tons of assists and energy as well. He still has a great shot, it may be too much to expect from him, but given enough time on the PP and if he and those guys click, he may end up with 20-25 goals and 30-40 assists. Heck, Brett Hull scored 25 goals and had 43 assists in his last year here, and that was while he was 39 years old. Guarantee with all the line juggling Babcock does, Modano will find himself playing with Dats or Zetts a few times this season too. This is a win win situation for all involved (well except Dallas, when they eat crow watching Modo raise the Cup.) I seem to remember Larionov wasn't too shabby at 41 years old in 2002 either, especially in the playoffs. And who was that guy, what was his name? Oh yeah, Chelios, he was also 40 in 2002, and played very well for a few more years at least. Just cause the guy is 40, doesn't mean he cannot play, when Yzerman was 40, he played in 61 games, scored 14 goals and had 20 assists, all with a bum knee, a lot of times playing 3rd line center behind Dats and Lang, would you guys take those stats from Modano for $1.5M? SIGN HIM UP!

Well, if Ward comes back, he'll be back in #27, is it against the rules to give Modo #09?

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Draper will split time with Miller and Eaves (if Eaves signs) the odd men out are Meech and Ritola. Pav -Z - Homer Franz - Flip - Bert Hud - Modo - Cleary Miller - Helm - Eaves (Abby has GR eligibilty, so he can and prolly will be sent down) Draper I just hope after all are re-signed, there is enough for a $1.2M d-man or the #6 spot.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

I bet he signs tomorrow. Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Hudler-Filppula-Franzen Cleary-Modano-Bertuzzi Eaves-Helm-Abdelkader Miller/Draper I like it. I kinda figured he that he wouldn't play anywhere else. (as a matter of fact, I saifd that earlier, buit it was more of me talking and wishing at the same time! I am glad he feels the same!) Besides, the other "favorites" aren't interested and Detroit really doesn't have any big buck UFA aspirations so, Modano fits Hollands bill to a tee! He is exactly the type of UFA that Holland loves to sign! I am a bit surprised at the offer of two years, but I guess they feel Mike has it in him to play two more, then so be it. I like it. I know he is not the 6'4 230lb. guy I always clammer about, but I do like him here. Also, I do believe he will provide Hudler with a lot of awesome setups, possibly propelling HUdler over 30 goals. I also predict, if Modano takes the 2 years, he will be celebrating at least 1 more Cup and his 600th goal! edit: Could this be Filppula's last year to prove he deserves second line minutes? I am not bashing him, I like Filppula, but he makes $3M, time to start putting the numbers up...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Do you realize how hard it is to repeat in today's NHL? Especially when you have lost or have to had traded away a great deal of your depth. Detroit kept most of their team in 2009 and almost did it, but yet didn't. Pitt lost a few key ingrediants on the D and didn't get past the 2nd round. Chicago will be competitive all season, but will not come near repeating. So if Mike's idea is to play a couple more season in the hope of getting one more Cup, he should not sign with the Hawks. Not saying Detroit is the favorite, but of all the teams rumored to be interested, it actually is his best opportunity. Besides, who would rather be on a line with, Hudler and Cleary or Marcus Kruger and Ben Smith? If he doesn't sign with Detroit, he will retire...

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Ya, but if Eaves signs too, then we have all four. Draper will be the 13th/14th forward along with Miller and Eaves rotating, let Ritola go back down thru waivers. Abdelkader has GRR eligibility so he will be sent down without having to pass waivers.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Third Line Center to start, could play higher if he performs (injuries as well will shake the lines up) and at least 2 powerplay unit, I would say that is a pretty good role on this team...
