Seattle Expansion Draft: Who you pick?

Ok, did some retooling so I have room to safely send some players down to the AHL: D Jacob Middleton for a 4th G in Josef Korenar from San Jose (giving me 2 G's for the AHL) D Robert Hagg for C German Rubtsov from Philly D Calvin De Haan for D Lucas Carlsson from Chicago D Kevin Shattenkirk for D Josh Mahura from Anaheim I am pretty happy with this team. Pretty competitive. Also, I am getting the 3rd pick of the draft (elite player) plus the 3rd pick in every round there-after.

Seattle Expansion Draft: Who you pick?

True because you never know who exactly will be protected, I just had capfriendly do a quick protect on who they felt would be protected and picked from there. But if those players are available, nothing is really stopping Seattle from taking them. Except, like I said, the fact that they'd have to waive 5 D and only one has exemptions. I do think that Seattle will take more D with waiver exemptions. Of course there is also the "trade" scenario's offered to NOT take a certain player. Again, when you are doing the draft, they don't indicate who is waiver exempt (or IR) until you click on the "View Team" tab. I can always go back and swap out some D with some younger D from the same team that will be on the farm. I just gotta figure out which ones I want to keep!

Seattle Expansion Draft: Who you pick?

I thought this was "who you pick?" as in if I was Seattle. Not who you protect! LOL! Here is my team if I were Seattle. I stayed away from pending UFA's except for one, I couldn't pass up on Adam Larsson., I just had capfriendly.com do a quick protect and chose from who was available. Obviously I had to choose some RFA's. I admit that I do not know a lot about some of the players I chose, but I went with an influx of vets and youth. I tried to stay away from huge contracts and too many players over 30. Go ahead do yours and lets see how close we are to the actual draft! (sorry for not having all the info, I tried to snip the entire page, but apparently it was too big to put on the post. I am under the cap by $19M. Also I didn't realize that Little and Girgensons were on the IR, it does not say it when you are drafting, but hopefully they aren't LTIR.) ..also I realized after the fact that I am going to have a lot of waiver issues when it comes to my D, only Foote is exempt. That is also some info that was not on the draft board. I am sure Seattle will select more players that don't have to clear waivers than I did...I am good up front and in G.

    BOLD Predictions for 2021 Season

Detroit will finish 10-13 from the bottom and win the draft lottery, drafting Owen Power. With their 2nd 1st rounder they draft Luke Hughes. With their 3rd 1st rounder they draft Aatu Raty. Yes, bold prediction they will have THREE 1st rounders ALL in the top 10! Wouldn't that be nice!

    2021 Season

Agree! But at some point, he will no longer be waiver free. As a matter of fact, this is his last season to be waiver exempt, according to capfriendly. Also, if he doesn't make the team, or hold a spot all year, do you protect him at the expansion draft? Right now we (I am assuming) protect Hronek and Stecher, will Cholowski be the 3rd D or will that be Lindstrom? I am pretty sure DD won't be protected. For me, that is who it boils down to, Cholowski and Lindstrom battling for the final protection. Related to that, I have Svech and Smith battling for the final FWD protection as well. Obviously Greiss will get the G protection. But, yes, bottom line is THIS is the season that Cholowski needs to make the leap to either the NHL club OR top D prospect playing in GR.

https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2017/5/12/15602822/2017-red-wings-draft-profile-michael-rasmussen-offers-size-and-skill-red-wings-covet https://www.tsn.ca/michael-rasmussen-centre-1.741814 ...again, I know there were other factors, need of a C, size, but it was eluded to many times, by Ken Holland himself too, that he is a PP specialist and huge net front presence. I do believe even Ken and Mickey mentioned it during that following the season, or on a draft wrap-up show. Maybe he's not a one trick pony, I hope he is not. Hopefully he makes the club and pushes Neilsen and Filppula out. FWIW, not that I matter, but when mocking up my protection list for Seattle, I always protect Ras. My debate is whether to protect Smith or Svech....but that is for another thread and another time!

...odd, that is what analysts talked about when he was drafted, NHL Network, TSN, Sportsnet, they all said Detroit was looking for a net front presence on the PP. I understand the things you pointed out and other reason's that made him a lottery pick, but there is no denying that he was drafted for his size, his PP points (which made up moist of his points) and the fact that (and it was referred to may times) Detroit hasn't had a PP specialist since Holmstrom retired.

and this is exactly why Holland drafted Rasmussen. I certainly hope he turns out to be a well rounded player, but if he is one dimensional (PP player) then I can live without him. re: Svechnikov, I say we trade the kid while he has "potential" value. But that is waning each season. I fear his time is short here as well. Maybe Yzerman can deal him to a Western Canada team, where is from, and maybe he can ignite some kind of career. I know drafts are crap shoots for the most part, but (I know Holland wanted to dump Pav's salary) most of us, if not all, wished that Holland would've just drafted Chychrun. Here's to hoping that we aren't saying the same thing about Zadina and Hughes 4-5 years from now.

    2021 Season

I am surprised that Hoffman hasn't gone somewhere for a year by now. Unless teams are just waiting for camps to thin out, you would think that some team that he would want to play for would have offered him something he could live with. Yzerman should say here is $4M for a year ad we'll deal you at the TDL to a Cup favorite team, if we cannot get a trade you can go back to UFA in the summer. I am sure many teams have offered him deals similar, I just don't get what his hold up is...

    2021 Season

so I am cleaning up the office and I stumble across an old recording (from tape that I put on a DVD) of an old Wings game from Nov. 26, 1999. It is vs. Edmonton, broadcast on UPN 50 (Ray Laine is on it!) and it features Yzerman's 600th goal! So in celebration of the season opening (finally) I am going to kick back and watch this classic for a couple of hours!) Draper, Fedorov and Osgood out with injury, Ken Wreggett in goal, Darryl LaPlante and Aren Miller called up. You can tell it came from a video tape, but I don't recall how I got it on the computer to make a dvd. But hey, it was 21 years ago, and I have forgotten a lot since then! 2021 Season

Here is a nice article describing a bunch of stuff this season when it comes to waivers and taxi squads: This is very interesting as well! Taxi squad DOES count against the cap if they are over a certain salary, just like the AHL: They are already back from Europe, if the AHL season does not start or is delayed by a lot, they'd be sitting around more if they weren't on the taxi squad. At least being on the squad, they can practice and travel with the NHL team, and at any moment be inserted in the lineup due to injury or sickness. Yzerman did say, if the AHL season gets going, he'd rather they be playing than being on the squad, so when/if that happens, then we will see how interesting it all gets and who comes to the taxi squad!

AND Ottawa bails another team out. At least they got a pick for their efforts! The guys Tampa got are both LTIR, so there is their relief! Along with Kucherov's $9.5M... Corey Perry signed in Montreal (previously over the cap by $365k) for $750k, putting MTL over by $1.1M. Still a few teams that should need to make a move or two to get under. Maybe Wings are still in the running to get some assets...

    2020 Offseason

Here's what doesn't help our cause, idiots like Ottawa taking on Derek Stepan's $6.5M, bailing out Arizona, and NOT getting anything for it! As a matter of fact they GAVE Arizona a 2nd round pick! I mean I know they had THREE 2nds, but come on Ottawa, don't bail these teams out for nothing! Idiots...

    2020 Offseason

I was just throwing stuff out there. In regards to Frolik, I was just looking at 30+ soon to be UFA's that would put them under. I don't think we will be getting anyone or any more picks actually, I was just thinking out loud.

    2020 Offseason

Of all the teams currently OVER the cap, here are the ones that (as of now) do not have anyone on IR or still need to find more cap relief: Vancouver Toronto Tampa Vegas Montreal ...the other teams that are over already have people on IR that will no doubt be turned into LTIR to get their needed relief. I am sure all these teams will find a way to get under, they are all $1.5M or less over, Montreal is only $366k over. With the exception of Tampa which is $2.1M over (with Kucherov expected to be on LTIR.) There is no rule that says you cannot go with less than 23 players on your roster, so I imagine if it comes down to it, theses teams would just "waive" a player that doesn't need to clear to the taxi squad, or even a player that they know not many teams would take. Vancouver probably couldn't do this because the only 2 players that don't have to clear waivers are on their D, which sits at only 6 players right now. So, with this in mind, what would you be looking for from these teams? Assume you are either getting a 1st round pick, or a higher end prospect in return if they won't part with a 1st. Vancouver : Eriksson and a 1st (or Podkolzin) Toronto: Hyman and 1st (or Liljegren (but I know they are trading him)) Tampa: Johnson (or Killoen) and 1st (or Alnefelt) (maybe the 1st AND Alnefelt to take on that much salary and term) Vegas: I'd take Nosek back, but it's have to be for their 1st and another asset. (maybe a 2022 2nd or Krebs) Montreal: I'd take Frolik and a 1st (or Caufeild) again, they aren't too far over, so they probably not that desperate. ...again, these are just ideas, suggestions, I bet none of these teams will be desperate enough to trade a 1st away, but you never know.

    2020 Offseason

True, I wouldn't be upset either way though. There aren't many UFA forwards left out there that I'd be interested in seeing here, unless you are signing a Hoffman to flip at the TDL. Other than AA there isn't anyone really. I wouldn't mind seeing Yzerman offer Dylan Strome a contract, but I don't want to lose any draft picks, so Chicago would match anything I would offer. Guess we go with a trade if we can, or just go with one of our own up front to total 14 forwards.

    2020 Offseason

So here is what I read today, from mLive: So, Tampa (and others) better find some more LTIR or make a deal or they may be exposing a player or two to waivers. I know they put Johnson on waivers before, so they could always do that again, but I wonder (as the article did not touch on this) if the salary works the same? Would a team only get a percentage of cap relief sending a player to the taxi squad? Or does the squad's cap not count towards the cap? Obviously the players that wouldn't normally count towards the cap (players under the salary limit) but it should all work like regular waivers IMO. Looking ahead to the following season, it is funny to see that Tampa is $3.5M over the cap already with only 16 players on their roster! I think the they still better look to shed some salary this year, it'll be even tougher next season when things are more normal, they will really need to give up some assets then! I have always been an AA fan, so I would be fine with giving him a 1 year "prove it" contract...as long as his linemates are NOT named Nielsen and Filppula... Who else is still left out there? I haven't looked in a few days.

    2020 Offseason

So now they have signed Cirelli for $4.8M, putting them $12M over the cap...Kucherov on LTIR brings them to $2.5M over, who will be the next guy having "surgery" this season....sheesh!

News From Around the NHL *Mod warning page 75*

I honestly don't see how they are going to do it without trading someone. They are $6.5M over the cap, IF Sergachev is "injured" then that only frees up $4.8M in LTIR. If the NHL somehow "allows" these teams to circumvent the cap issues, then this will be even more corrupt than the draft lottery! ...of course with the whole taxi squad thing, which I am assuming will NOT count against the cap, they could just move $2M off their roster to the taxi squad and replace them with a sub-million dollar call-up...reeks I tell you, it reeks! I am thinking if this were announced during the buyout period, then Yzerman probably would've opted to place Abby there instead of buying him out at 6 years and just waited until next season to buy him out...ugh, Gary Bettman is so ******* shady!!!!
