    4/7 GDT : Blues 1 at Red Wings 0

Mule is often too chicken to stay in front once the shot is off. Abby is pretty good at screening but I don't know that he's very good at redirecting things. Which pretty much leaves Cleary.

Kindl needs to teach Kronwall how to get a shot through from the point. He's one of the best at it on the team.

    Thinking on 2013/14 roster.

Though he re-signed Mac a few years later. I'd be surprised if Holland bought out Sammy one year after giving him a 35+ contract with a NTC, but I guess there's always a chance.

Anyone else liking the pre 2005 more?

My biggest complaint since 2005 would be the shootout, but I won't go into all that again. As for the cap, I don't know that parity necessary equals a healthier league. The NHL apparently thinks so and I'm sure it makes a lot of small markets happy, but people still talk about the Avs-Wings rivalry. That happened in great part because they were two great teams who had to get past the other one to win the Cup year after year. Plus when the teams become successful for years, they usually achieve popularity that transcends just their local market. I also think a soft cap/luxury tax might be better as well. At the very least in principal it would reward great owners like Ilitch who turned around a franchise and know how to run a business. I'm guessing he'd happily pay extra revenue sharing if he could spend above the cap. And with the cap and contract limits, we'll likely start to see more teams having a couple star players and a whole lot of scrubs on the bottom two lines. Owners will always pay top dollar for the star players, there's just not a lot to go around for everyone else. The more they ratchet down the cap and contract restrictions, it'll only get worse. But honestly a part of waining interest is also just getting older and having more things compete for my time. I love hockey, but I could never love it as much as I did when I was 12 years old, going to nearly every home game and watching as many games as I could, even though the team was pretty awful then except for this guy Yzerman.

    4/5 GDT: Red Wings 3 @ Avalanche 2 (OT)

I didn't catch the game so I didn't realize they moved Mule to center the second line. Maybe it will make the game enough "fun" for Franzen? http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/04/red_wings_coach_mike_babcock_s_4.html

Going forward with what we have

He's only played 40 games in the NHL, only 26 of which have been this season. And he's playing with a defensive corps that is very hit or miss from night to night. I think it's early to give up on his career as a defenseman.
  8. Ilitch has been vocal about his dislike for the NHL's salary cap and that he likes that baseball doesn't have one. That being said, I don't think the Wings not being up against the cap is some evidence of him spending money on the Tigers that he could've used on the Wings. The Wings have what $7 million in cap room? When you're talking about the amount of money Ilitch spends on these franchises, plus or minus 7 million is chump change. It's probably more a sign of Holland being even more conservative than usual the last couple seasons because of the new CBA and lower cap.

NHL.com names babs "top NHL coach"

He's a great coach for sure. People can complain about him and I don't always understand his moves, but there's not a coach out there I'd clearly want over him. I'm guessing it won't be a popular opinion here but on that list Bylsma seemed ranked a little low to me.

Concerned - we might not make it in to the playoffs

You have to factor in three point games though too. If the Wings lose a game, even if Edmonton and Columbus play each other that same night it's possible they can both gain ground on Detroit.

Looks like Hawks-Blues is going to OT. These 3 point games are annoying.

    4/4 GDT - STLvCHI - EDMvVAN - MINvLA

Kings up 2-0 in the 1st. They chased Backstrom with 2 goals in less than 4 minutes in.

    4/4 GDT : Red Wings 2 @ Coyotes 4

For those interested, Kings up 2-0 in 1st period against the Wild. (4 minutes in). Backstrom just got the hook. Blue Jackets beat the Preds 3-1.

    All about puck possession?

So the earth-shattering conclusion of all that math is that having the puck more and getting more shots on net than your opponent gives you a better chance of winning? This did little to change my already low opinion of "advanced" hockey statistics and their usefulness. I think it's also important to note that Fenwick is based on the assumption that directing more shots towards an opponents net equals being in possession of the puck more than your opponent. Also worth noting that it's "towards" the net, not necessarily even on net. So in this man's humble opinion, they've compiled a bunch of numbers built around a somewhat questionable assumption, in order to prove something that's pretty self evident to anyone who has eyeballs and has directed them "towards" a hockey game.

Crosby out for remainder of season AND playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun1m Contrary to rumors that are out there, Sidney Crosby does not have any concussion symptoms, his agent Pat Brisson says. Ray Shero says same Rumor not true. Let's all go back to ignoring He Who Shall Not Be Named.™

Some of the names we were after.....

As was mentioned, if you don't like the thread don't post in it. If you do post in it, stay on topic. (bolded so people are more likely to read the warning, but also realizing it makes me seem angry when i'm not).

Shocking, Wings aren't active as trade deadline expires

At this point we can move this conversation to one of the other 18 threads discussing Holland, the Wings future, etc. Just trying to consolidate a wee bit.

    Official NHL Trade Deadline thread

I don't think the fans knew it, but you'd hope someone in the Red Wings organization had a better sense of him. I don't think the Wings lost some stud D man (obviously since he's back). But I don't think it's a stretch to say they mishandled Quincey when you lose him for nothing and he goes on to play 20 minutes a night. Compounded by giving up a first to give him back. It's not like it's it's on the level of the Adam Oates trade. Just not one of Holland and managements best moments with prospects.
  21. haroldsnepsts

    Official NHL Trade Deadline thread

It isn't one of Holland's finer moments. He probably didn't want to trade Quincey today out of fear he'd make another mistake in a deal with him. Kept lesser players over him, lost him for nothing on waivers, watched him play big minutes in LA and Colorado, then gave up too much to get him back.

I can respect that. Play on through.

    Official NHL Trade Deadline thread

So are you saying 2 games is enough to tell what it's done to team chemistry? Even if they lose so many games they barely make the playoffs, the ultimate test of these trades will be what the Pens do in the postseason.
  24. haroldsnepsts

    Official NHL Trade Deadline thread

I think 4 hours after the trade deadline is a little premature to properly judge what the moves have done to a team.

Could Kenny be working on something HUGE?

The answer is no. Unless he ate a large meal yesterday and is currently in the bathroom.
