I don't disagree. It's just unfortunate that it's happening during Datsyuk and Zetterberg's remaining good years. And as I said before, I still have to question Holland's rebuild plan. Because he says they're trying to rebuild and reload, but if you don't make any deals and you don't let rookies play, how exactly are you doing either of those? Injuries are what gave the kids a shot, not Holland. And guys like Sammy and Cola aren't rebuild moves. Maybe he's finally acknowledging the team needs rebuilding and spare parts like Sammy aren't going to cut it.
-
Are we really on a rebuild though? I think the Wings have some good young players in the lineup but keep in mind that if not for injuries most of them would not be playing. It's not like it was Holland's plan all along to bring up this many of the kids and give them a shot. If the team were healthy this season the defensive corps would've been some combination of: Kronwall-Ericsson White-Quincey Cola/Smith/Kindl And if Bert, Sammy, and Helm were all healthy, how much of a chance would any of the new forwards been given? I don't disagree that the Wings should be in rebuild mode. Short of guys getting a chance due to injury, I don't really see what's being rebuilt. Maybe this summer? Caps trade: Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 45s F. Forsberg to Nash for M. Erat and M. Latta Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 53s As per @Real_ESPNLeBrun, NSH trades Michael Latta and Martin Erat to WSH for Filip Forsberg.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 2m Bizarre levels of secrecy/intrigue over imminent WSH announcement. #tradecentre Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 2m Caps sources incredibly mum
-
I would think so. Otherwise he definitely should've traded him in some deal before he lost Flip for nothing.

Same ol' song and dance. Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive 23s Wings were in on 2 or 3 players, felt they made competitive offers, but it wasn't good enough. As I've said, I didn't really want Holland to make a deal for a playoff rental, but it is kind of comical that he says the same things year after year.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 19s Mathew Lombardi to Anaheim for Brandon McMillan Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 4m Wade Redden traded to Boston by St. Louis Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 1m Steve Sullivan traded to NJ for a 7th rounder

Sounds like the Canucks and Leafs did some more heavy flirting regarding Luongo but still couldn't seal the deal.
-
that's the part I didn't get about Lebrun's tweet.
-
To be clear, I really didn't want Holland giving up assets for someone who would be a UFA this summer and likely re-sign somewhere else. But I don't agree with the logic of the bolded section. Whether he was on the phone for hours and made thousands of calls or whether he made one doesn't really matter. Either way he didn't get a deal done. It's no consolation to me if he were repeatedly trying and failing.

Raffi dirtbag Torres to San Jose for a 3rd round pick. I wonder if there's any conditions on it, like him getting suspended for headhunting.

This thread is here and it's staying. So from here on out let's discuss the trades and not worthiness of the thread.
-
They didn't even really stand pat though. The Blackhawks acquired Handzus, the Kings acquired Regehr, as you mentioned, the Canucks acquired Roy. So even some of the top teams made moves to fulfill their needs.
-
Seriously. When a former Wing is on the trading block, don't even joke about him coming here.
-
Do you have a source for that? He certainly looks physically frail but isn't he still giving interviews? You've been awfully quick to call him senile and a drunk, but I haven't heard anything about dementia or whatever it is you're implying. Wondering if I've missed something as I don't live in Detroit anymore so I don't follow the local news there.
-
While it's disappointing he likely won't make any moves again that part of the quote I don't have a problem with. Holland is exactly right. the last thing the Wings need is to give up assets for yet another depth guy. They need top end talent. There's little point in a rental either. It's disappointing, but honestly I was more disappointed when Holland didn't do anything the last couple seasons of Lidstrom's career. That's when it would've been worth giving up some assets for a deep playoff run before Nick retired. This season with the cap going down and Wings changing conferences, it's no surprise he's more conservative than ever.

Holland: "We don't need depth...Need a top guy"

After watching the Wings get knocked around by Colorado, who isn't particularly big, it'd be nice to add toughness. And I could probably get over having the dumbest hockey player in the league on the roster, I just don't know it'll be worth renting Clowe for what the Wings would have to give up. -
Sorry. My bad. It's easy to miss with some of the crazy things people say here. Even the most outrageous sarcastic statements can end up looking serious. Honestly I wasn't necessarily arguing that either should absolutely sit. Someone asked if the Wings were going to sit one of the two of them after their awful performance, who would it be. Ultimately I pick Kindl. Not by a landslide or anything. It was just a hypothetical question I answered that I dont feel particularly strongly about. In the end I think Smith will provide a lot of what Kindl does, only better. He's just inexperienced. Smith is making mental mistakes out there but he's not flailing to avoid getting crushed (and not doing a very good job of it) like Kindl. But ultimately neither one should probably sit. You've got to hope they'll rebound. But if I'm going to pick one, I go with the rookie who has more potential and can hopefully learn and turn it around instead of punishing him by demoting him. Not as much as Kindl, but yes, he does.
-
I strongly disagree Kronwall has struggled in taking on the #1 spot, but there's no way Kindl is better than him defensively. Kronwall is asked to do a ton more than Kindl on a nightly basis facing the top competition. The last couple games notwithstanding, Kindl has looked good as a bottom pairing guy. If Kindl played Kronwalls' shifts night after a night, it would be a disaster.
-
playing well in transition? were you watching tonight? Smith plays the PP, PK, and plays more minutes than Kindl. Kindl gets the easy minutes as a #6 guy and has been good on the PP. so yes, my suggestion was that if you are going to sit someone, don't stunt the rookie's development just let him play fewer minutes. Smith has higher potential than Kindl, even though Kindl is finally looking like he's capable of holding a #6 spot.
-
They're delayed 2nd round picks. 2014 and 15.
-
you're kind of right, at least about the soft part. I'd probably be more forgiving of Kindl's screwups if he were knocking guys around out there instead of bailing out of hits. He and Franzen are about the smallest playing 6'3" 215+ lb guys you'll find in the NHL. the replay they showed during the game you could see him smiling as he popped back up from the bench after going in headfirst.
-
I'd sit Kindl and reduce Smith minutes down to what Kindl has been playing.
-
Ah. I missed that he was the #1 star. I wouldn't have given him that. Jimmy deserved it more than Franzen for those big saves at the end.
-
But those are the kinds of mistakes rookies make. I think they get rattled and tired from the pace of the game and are prone to brainfarts. was he was paired with White a lot too tonight? That's not gonna help. As much as I criticize the guy, I thought he had a good game tonight. He was a major factor in two of the goals.
