    ESPN's NHL Team-Prospect Rankings...more bad news

They at least give a decent explanation of their ranking, even if it does seem low. The guy who ranks them third on hockey prospectus doesn't really give a good indication as to why. He makes broad statements but doesn't name any of the current prospects.

    ESPN's NHL Team-Prospect Rankings...more bad news

The funny part is that the guy who ranked them 3rd on Hockey Prospectus is also a prospects writer for ESPN. Admittedly I'm not super familiar with Detroit's prospects, but third?? Seems unlikely compared to the high drafts other teams have had year after year.

Rating the NHL Franchises and Predictions

What does Burrows have to do with toughness? I may not like some things about Tootoo, but he legitimately a tough little dude. Burrows is a finger biting, diving, whining agitator. He makes Ott look classy. No thank you. There's very few players I can honestly say I'd be embarrassed to have on the Wings, but Burrows is one of them.

Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

If Philly gets Weber and Doan, they will have ALMOST replaced the nastiness that Pronger plays with.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Cool thanks for doing that homework. Though the player in that article is stating that concessions and parking are already not a part of HRR. That's not to say he's correct, but it's what he claims.

    2012 Lockout Watch

It is a pretty interesting read. I wonder who the player is? To me the best point he makes is: His proposed soft-cap/luxury tax system I think is an interesting one as well, though I agree that it'll likely never happen. And touches on another big point that doesn't get talked about a lot, but is starting to with the new CBA negotiations. Hockey Related Revenue. Not only do owners want to reduce the percentage of HRR that the players get, they want to change what constitutes HRR. And it's safe to say they're not going to end up with a larger number when they change the definition. I'd be curious to know what currently does and does not constitute HRR.

    Patrick Kane at it again

Besides, didn't he say basically the same thing after the limo photos surfaced? you know, the one he had on his t-shirt when he went and got hammered this last time on cinco de mayo? or maybe it was the cab driver incident, I can't remember. Either way, the words ring hollow until he actually stops showing up in pictures pass out drunk looking like a d-bag.
  8. According to Dreger, the Wings signed Quincey. No details yet. https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger

With cap space to clear, do Flyers become a Wings trade partner?

Is he really that dirty still? I don't get to see him play much but I had the same impression that he'd gotten a little better. My perspective may be skewed by seeing him mostly in playoff games. Honestly I think Briere is dirtier than Hartnell. The Flyers are a fun team to watch though. If they ever find a stable goaltender they could do some serious damage.
  10. Oh, now we're just using salary as a measure? The original phrase was a "big free agent splash". I don't think I need to go over Jagr's resume, but his return to the NHL was a pretty big free agent signing. There were multiple teams trying to sign him, and there was also pretty significant risk given his age and the question mark of transitioning from the KHL. Both those factors kept his salary down. But $3.3 million for a 40 year old who's been away from the NHL for 3 years isn't exactly chump change. In terms of a big free agent splash that could've gone bad but didn't, I'd say Jagr definitely qualifies, which was the original point of the post that started all this.

He moved to the Eastern conference?

Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

Tootoo has never really played on the PK. That's not to say maybe he couldn't become one, but it would require a pretty major development in his game.
  13. This one? Obviously it wasn't like Suter and Parise, but don't you remember all the giddy speculation last year about who would sign him? There were something like 5 Cup contending teams that were in the mix for him. To me, a superstar of Jagr's caliber returning from the KHL is a pretty big free agent splash, even at his age.

Simmonds? Yes please. I was bummed when LA traded him, and it wasn't to Detroit.

We can still win it all THIS season, but...

Honestly I don't consider that a very bold move, as right now he doesn't really have a choice. Unless he makes some big free agent splash or trade, the kids are gonna get plenty of ice time. A bolder move would've been giving Smith ice time last year to get him some time with Lidstrom. Even with his mistakes, Smith clearly had more to offer than Kindl, but was his contract status determined his fate not his performance on the ice.

That's what I don't get. Pronger has a 35+ contract so it should count against the cap hit if he were to retire, right? But he can stay "active" as a player and the Flyers get LTIR cap relief? Is that right?
  17. Dreger pointing out how the Preds botched this last year.

We can still win it all THIS season, but...

I'm not sure the Kings are the best example for the point you're making. I's overlooking that the Kings traded two promising young players and a pick to bring in Richards before the season started, fired their coach halfway through the season, and traded away a talented young defenseman they had signed long term to bring in Carter. They also called up two kids from the minors and gave them a lot of playing time in spite of their lack of experience. Those are all very bold moves and un-Holland like. It's not like the Kings made minor tweaks, got into the playoffs then suddenly everything fell into place. They were a good team for a couple seasons, especially defensively, that made very bold moves to get them to the Cup.

Is Pronger even fit to play? I honestly don't know but last I heard he may be done for his career due to post concussion symptoms.
  20. And Dreger may have overestimated the picks. How does it work again? He's revising his totals saying it may be a couple firsts and a couple 2nds.
  21. Flyers putting the screw to the Predators, and hoping for salary rollback and buyouts? wow. If the Preds don't match, what's left of their franchise, other than a whole lotta good draft picks?

    Could trade rumors spark Franzen?

Has he been mentioned in serious trade rumors other than on this site? Like Bobby Ryan has been legitimately shopped by the Ducks, but I haven't really heard anything like that with Mule. Just speculation. As for what will inspire Franzen to play to his potential on a more regular basis, who the hell knows.

    Red Wings re-sign Quincey: 2-years, $7.55m total, $3.775/yr

I still wonder if he'll pick up a 6/7 d-man. With Janik gone, does anyone know who the Wings would call up if a defenseman got injured?
