    RFA Rules

Merged your post with the relevant thread. Scroll up. The only info I'm not sure of is when they can extend offer sheets. Not sure if that happens on July 1st as well, or some later date.

The Ever-Increasing Cap, Ridiculous Contracts, and Hitting

The trick will be to make sure the league is healthy without punishing smart owners like Illitch because of the owners and GM's out there who can't run a successful franchise. It should be an attempt to get a more level playing field, but the CBA will be too restrictive if it tries to save some of these idiots from themselves. Some franchises and markets should be allowed to fail rather than be propped up by the league.

Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

About a third of the clips in this video highlight what I don't like about Tootoo, some questionable hits where he leaves his feet and targets the head. And ditching his gloves and throwing punches before the other guy even knows he's in a fight. He's a tough fighter for his size, but Tootoo doesn't fare as well in fights when he actually squares up.

The Ever-Increasing Cap, Ridiculous Contracts, and Hitting

They should start by just limiting the term. If you can't sign guys for over 10 years, for younger players you're not going to be able to knock down the cap hit with the reduced salary at the end of their career. So hopefully the yearly salary would come down a bit as well. Otherwise I'm not terribly concerned with how much bank the players make as long as the league is healthy overall (which the owners are about to argue it is not, I'm sure). The significant parts to me are the proportion of the cap each player is taking up no matter the dollar amount, and that the cap is essentially being circumvented by GM's using the long term.

    Quincey files for arbitration

I'm trying to remember exactly how it works but that's a good point. By filing arbitration, doesn't that prohibit any other teams from extending offer sheets, essentially committing him to the Wings? (Short of running to the KHL after filing arbitration of course) EDIT: Just did a little homework and it's true, by filing for arbitration, Quincey cannot sign an offer sheet from another team.

Zach Parise agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

The thread is about the Parise signing. Let's stay on topic please.

    Jonathan Ericsson. Knock, knock...

Again, maybe with the exception of White, it didn't sound to me like he's calling anyone out. That implies that they have tried and failed and are getting taken to task for it. It sounded more like a statement of what will be required of the Wings defense this coming year to make up for the loss of Lidstrom and Stuart. Not any slam on any of the defensemen. Honestly I don't think his season being a complete success has anything to do with points. Sure it'd be great if he put up 30, but that's not going to make or break his season. He needs to continue to be a force on the PK, play solid even strength minutes, and knock the hell out of guys anytime they're around the net or in the corners. If he does that, I consider his season a success.

    Jonathan Ericsson. Knock, knock...

You're putting words in his mouth there. That's not what he said. He didn't say Kronwall didn't grasp the opportunity, just pointed out he just became the top pairing guy. And he didn't say none of them had stepped up before. Lidstrom and Stuart are gone. I took it more to mean everyone needs to raise their game to fill that void, since right now the Wings don't have anyone to fill those considerably large roles. It's not that they haven't done well in the past, but that they need to do even more this season.

Holland comments on Suter & Parise going to Wild

Mainly I just hope that Stevie figures out how to rebuild in Tampa and makes his mistakes and gains experiences there. Then comes back to Detroit as GM for a team that will likely be in need of a serious rebuild.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

As I said in the other thread, it's not my job to come up with options to satisfy you. I'm not going to continue this debate in multiple threads. I'm sorry you're unhappy with people criticizing Holland, but if it upsets you so much perhaps you should just not enter those threads.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

I've answered this already Crymson. It's not our job to make a list of all the potential trades Holland could've made over the last few seasons. Especially because you'd just shoot them down saying we dont' know they would go for that. As you've even said, a GM's job is to plan for the future. This future was a known thing for the Wings, and they don't exactly look prepared for it. When you look at our blueline right now, it's not an unreasonable complaint to say the Wings could've been better prepared for this transition. Holland giving up a first for Quincey was a desperation move. Holland having to compete so hard for Suter was a desperation move. Your obsession with people complaining right now is like the old joke "The food here is awful! And such small portions!" If you don't like how people are reacting, no one is making you come read every thread here.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

I'm hoping for the best, but the Yzerman comparison isn't really the same. Stevie was basically a third liner when he retired and we had Datsyuk and Zetterberg coming into their prime. Lidstrom was still the number one D-man on the team and still near the top of the league in terms of quality of play. We have no one that comes close to that on the blueline AND lost a middle pairing guy in Stuart as well. I absolutely don't blame holland for not landing Suter given what happened. But as I've said, he could've made moves earlier to ease the transition.

Zach Parise agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

I haven't really worked out all the math but the Wild have almost $36 million tied up in 5 players. Can they really put together a competitive team with what's left??

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

Right. But that's Holland's job. And it's been several years. Everyone could see this coming and he let it get to the point where Suter was practically make or break it for the Wings blueline. I can be upset about that without knowing all the details (to be clear, I don't blame Holland for not getting Suter given the deal he got). The next big hurdle is that Dats and Z are getting on and years. So the Wings have a weak blueline and an aging offense. He's still got time to help the offense, but there aren't a lot of defensive options out there.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

Holland is very good at making adjustments, but at times feels like he's too conservative, trying to milk yet another year out of the puck-possession skilled Wings. When Schneider leaves, he gets a very similar d-man in Rafalski and keeps things going. The Wings team have been like a very fast sportscar that is getting up in years and Holland has been trying to make little tweaks and patches to keep it running another year. The problem is that it's just not faster than other cars anymore and it just dropped the transmission this offseason. Holland has shown himself as a great GM when it comes to adjustments, but maybe not a great rebuilder.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

We as fans can be upset about Holland not accounting for this day without having to back it up with every single player that's been available over the last few years. It's called transition planning. All GM's have to do it. We don't even have full info on who's available and what it cost and you'll likely shoot down any suggestion as too expensive anyway. The fact is, Lidstrom retiring was an inevitability. Maybe he would've stayed another year, but Holland knew this day was coming for a long time now plus or minus a season. And Stuart leaving was a known for at least a couple seasons now. This is not like losing a Dman the way the Wings did Vladdy or Fischer. There were no surprises in this transition.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

That's the part I fault Holland for. Rafalski retiring was a little sooner than expected but overall not a surprise, Lidstrom was known to retire either this season or next, Stuart was known to head back to California. He didn't make any moves over the years to ease that transition. Quincey was a desperation stop-gap measure at the end of last season, but that's about it. Holland left the Wings in a position where they had to run hard at Suter. The Wings blueline needs serious help.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

Wild were doing well, then Koivu got injured and the wheels came off. But they just made a huge improvement to their offense (which was 30th in the league) and defense. They should make the playofffs, and hopefully play more exciting hockey with the offensive talent they have.

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

Agreed. I can't see how contract lengths that long are good for the league. It wouldn't surprise me if they limited length in the new CBA. 10 years would be a start. 7 or 8 seems reasonable.

Hush your mouth. The Wings are set for bottom pairing d-men. What they need is a top pairing or at least middle pairing guy.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

That's a good point. still, as anxious as I am to hear an answer, I can't really fault a guy for taking three whole days to decide on a deal that largely determines what the next decade of his life will be like.

    Jagr signs in Dallas

Pretty much agree with what's been said. It's an odd choice for a 40 yr old. I don't know if Philly made any offer for him to stay, but headed to Dallas it's pretty clear he's content to be just a hired gun somewhere.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

I'm guessing it's been mentioned in this thread already but in case it hasn't, according to a retweet by Dreger, the Wild also met with Suter today. It's incredibly frustrating waiting around like this as a fan, but I know if I was making a decision that involved millions and millions of dollars and affected the next decade or more of my life, I might want to sleep on it a bit. 20 plus teams interested, none of which are allowed to even hint at what the deal might be prior to July 1. How exactly can they be expected to research neighborhoods and schools on that many markets when they don't even know where the serious offers are coming from? Sure they have some idea, but all the offers were all going to be in the same ballpark. There's a ton of variables besides dollar amounts. Like I said, it's frustrating as a fan, but I've taken longer to decide on jobs that I've taken, and they involved a tiny fraction of the money and length that we're talking about here.
