He can ask for it. No way he gets it tho.

Lowetide.ca is my go-to Oilers discussion place. Pretty good community over there. https://lowetide.ca/2019/05/06/a-time-to-reap-a-time-to-sow-2/#comments

Probably cold comfort tho. I don't trust any goalies, as a rule.

why do you kids love shea weber jacks when they don't even taste like apples

It's kinda nice to be on the other side of it. Clenching your butt for a quarter-century is exhausting and probably bad for your health.

Gimme your keys, you is drunk.

Weber may end up being a steal at 38 years old. But I'm ok with the Wings not being the team that has to count on him aging extraordinarily well. League is getting younger and faster. Cap hell is getting easier to slip into. Yzerman is starting with something close to a blank slate. I want another golden age where the Wings are a perennial contender for 20 years. ...All of which is to say: If you come knocking at my door with a used Shea Weber -- whose contract expires in 2026 -- and you want me to fork over a couple of prime assets for him, you had better be Stephanie Seymour wearing nothing but black stockings, or else this will be my reaction:

I feel like Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce are arguably two of the most underappreciated defensemen in the league. Slavin especially. Dude's put up 11 points through these first two rounds. If the Isles don't go out like chumps in four straight, he probably has more than 11 points. Madness. I also feel like Bean doesn't get much attention. Which is weird, because he definitely counts as a top prospect and I was kind of under the impression that every GM and his mother covets young defensemen just like him.

I think 3 years would be my limit. *Maybe* 4. 7 is nightmarish. But I do have to assume we're getting amnesty buyouts with the next CBA, so maybe the term on his deal is a non-issue. Contract expires in 2026. At whch point he'd be...40ish.

I mean, I don't know how you can consider him without considering the cap and the assets we'd have to give up. If you're asking if I'd want him as a UFA at, like, $7M x 3, I think I could go for that. But the reality is he's 33 and his contract runs for another 500 years. And if the Habs are trading him right now, it means they think he's become a problem. Amnesty buyouts could be a thing tho.

RIP Columbus Imagine sweeping the Bolts and then losing to the Bruins in 6. And you've got, like, three 2019 draft picks and two of your biggest stars are probably leaving. They really needed to at least reach the conference finals.

I think Holland will be fine. He has the best player in the league in McDavid and a franchise centerman in Draisaitl. He needs to assemble a competent supporting cast. That's about it. The Oilers have been so badly mismanaged that McDavid's somehow gone, like, two whole seasons without an actual high-end scoring winger flanking him (unless you count Draisaitl, who should be playing in the middle). It's mind-boggling.

Therrien is back. Good. Now I can go back to hating the Flyers again. -

I'm ok with a staff overhaul. I like some of the guys, but if we're operating with the "S***'s gone stale, we need to shake things up" mentality, might as well embrace it totally. What have you done for me lately, Hakan?

Holland is good people and he did incredible things for this franchise. I wish him the best.

2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?
Dabura replied to Dabura's topic in General
We're on the same page there. I'm not even all that high on Connolly, I just think he could be a good cheap(ish) plug-in. (We're always going on about how we need right-handed forwards.) I'm just saying if it's Callahan and a 3rd then maybe it's not worth it, because better trade options could present themselves or maybe you put the $5M towards a free agent. -

Sorry for being kind of short with you. Was a bit distracted and full of tequila. I'm still full of tequila, but I'm a bit less distracted now. Intra-division trades definitely happen and I think you're right to challenge me on the idea that BriseBois wouldn't give us a guy like Raddysh just because we're divisional rivals. And the whole Yzerman-leaving-and-then-bringing-front-office-guys-with-him thing probably doesn't create any bad blood or anything like that. So, all things considered, I do think this is realistic r0sterb8ion material. I was thinking along the lines of holding out for a better predatory situation or some unforeseen development that drops a golden trade opportunity in our laps. I'm with you re: middling free agents, though I think there are some decent players worth considering, e.g. Brett Connolly. That $5M in cap space that Callahan would be eating up could be huge at some point in the season and I'm not sure a 3rd or a mid-level prospect is worth hurting our flexibility like that. Callahan's actually a not-terrible fourth-liner at this point, so he does have sort some value as a player...but, yeah. I want a guy like Raddysh or a juicy pick. I'd be willing to throw in a piece or two if that'd help balance it out from Tampa's perspective. (Ehn? de la Rose? A 3rd of our own?) If we get Taylor Raddysh, sign Brett Connolly to a manageable deal, and grab one of the consensus top forwards in this year's draft...that would be f***ing glorious. -
2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?
Dabura replied to Dabura's topic in General
I'm not saying they don't happen. I'm just saying it can be an obstacle. Everything I understand about the Fox situation tells me he was always going to land in New York, because that's where he wants to be. If BriseBois gets essentially identical offers from the Wings and a Pacific Division team, I think he favors shipping the sweetener piece outside of the division. "Pound sand" was probably an overstatement on my part. There's probably potential for a deal getting done there. But I'm really not sure I'd expect the Wings to be BriseBois' prefered trade partner if he's dangling a piece that's good enough to get Yzerman interested in the first place, e.g. Raddysh, Foote. I'm in favor of making this kind of move, btw. It'd have to net us a pretty good pick and/or prospect tho, otherwise I think I'd rather see Yzerman sit on the cap space or put it towards something else. -

Teams being wary of trading within their own divisions is absolutely a thing. Maybe it would be a factor in this case, maybe it wouldn't. If we're talking about a meh sweetener, it probably isn't a consideration at all. If we're talking about one of the Bolts' better young players (someone roughly akin to Teravainen), I would expect BriseBois to try to find a non-Atlantic trade partner. -

Given that we're in the same division and we're in the process of raiding their front office, I'm guessing BriseBois would tell Yzerman to pound sand.
