2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?
Dabura replied to Dabura's topic in General
I wouldn't rule it out, tbh. Holland says he expects us to have $15-20M in cap space this summer. New GM, potentially a ton of cap space...some would say that screams "big moves coming." Not sure I'd agree, but I don't think we can rule out the possibility. I kinda like the idea of Dzingel on a four- or five-year deal, if that's possible. Our projected top six is lacking, even if Helm and Abdelkader and Glendening are all in the bottom six. -
Knights did themselves no favors in this series, but that call will go down as one of the worst in the history of the league. Brutal.

In retrospect, maybe all the people who were saying the Leafs needed more gritty veteran guys were on to something. Babcock won his one Cup with an extremely deep team. Battle-tested veteran depth. Skill guys who, for the most part, could be trusted in all situations. This Leafs team...is not that team. Skill for days, but it's a paper tiger team. Not making excuses for Babcock. But I do kinda feel like this is more on Dubas. Team is fundamentally flawed.

Perhaps. Seems most people think he's gonna be traded, probably at the draft.
-
Should've traded for Glendening. I'm not even kidding. Losing their top shutdown guy in Kadri was a massive blow. Gauthier is meh.
-
Zadina with two goals and an assist in last night's win.
-
Is it autumn? Because I see the Leafs have fallen.

shut yo mouf

Is that compensation system even a thing anymore?

Quoted for truth. Also quoted for truth. Leafs ain't done s*** since before I was even born.

Cam Robinson/DobberProspects is one of my go-to resources. I think he puts it well: https://dobberprospects.com/cam-robinsons-2019-nhl-draft-rankings-april-2019/ That lines up pretty well with my own observations. (I actually have the same basic concern with Podkolzin, for what it's worth.) I've seen at least a couple other sources touch on it, but I can't remember off the top of my head who said it. Certainly it's fair to say the consensus opinion, at least among "amateur amateur scouts" (AKA the internet intelligentsia, i.e. blogger folk), is that his skating is fine. I do wonder what effect Gaudreau's disappearing act might have on size-related narratives and such. Possibly no effect, but I suppose it's something worth tracking.

The more time passes, the more I feel that team really stands out as an outlier. I don't mean that in a "Their Cup doesn't count!" way. If anything, it's a very serious compliment. Winning a Cup without overwhelming star power is almost unheard of, whether we're talking pre-2005 or post-2005. Hell, why not. Everyone's brackets are busted anyway.

Dude is lunatic-tier right now. Straight-up scoring goals at will. It's kinda crazy that the best goal-scorer in the draft doesn't crack most people's top 5 or even top 8. I mean, I get it. He's tiny. He's played on an absolutely loaded USNTDP team this season and has flanked Jack Hughes for most of the season. Some people aren't crazy about his skating. But the dude can score goals. Holy crap can he scores goals.

That too!

There's so much going against the Leafs in the likeability department. Canada Canadian Based in Canada Traitorous Tavares Canada Their fans are all insufferable Canadian hockey media, which is basically Leafs media, is insufferable The city of Toronto is a stupid place Bumbling Babcock Golfin' Kadri Prissy Nylander Overrated Auston Canada I could go on.

They must be stopped.

I'm way more emotionally invested in this than I should be. F*** both these teams, but f*** the Leafs more.

Show of hands: Who here thought this series would feature any bad blood? EDIT: Oops, I said "game," meant to say "series."

Doesn't seem like it's had any lingering impact, but I do think it's something you have to take into consideration. I would say the Avs' most pressing need is scoring depth at forward; they have a great top line and not much behind it. I figure they'll be focusing on centermen.

Fair enough. I'd forgotten he was that good at the time.
