He's a pretty good player, just not a solid NHL defenseman. Given that he didn't even cost us a draft pick (undrafted), I'm perfectly satisfied with him being a Lashoff type, i.e. someone who plays an important role for the Griffins.

I have to assume Holland believed it was the best return he was gonna get and that he had good reason to believe so.

This is just the latest example of Holland being transparent about what he wants -- basically "calling his shot." I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, just that it's a thing. if Holland says he wants a 1st/2nd and a prospect who can step right in and help us right now, and if the local media people are repeating that point, then that's the return you can expect (more or less). Put simply: If Holland says [x], expect [x]. This applies to pretty much everything he does. He's a straight shooter. Something to keep in mind as we move forward.

I think his skating is the one thing that's really working against him. You can be a small defenseman in today's NHL, but it's nearly impossible to be a small defenseman with average-at-best skating, unless you're super-skilled. Could be a good veteran leader in GR for years to come, like Lashoff. Or we could try to trade him for a late pick. I'd be good with either path.

I think the writing's been on the wall for Hicketts for a while now, tbh. Hate to say it, but he's probably a career AHLer. Then again, the same could probably be said of Bowey. It'll be interesting to see how everything shakes out.

I like Bowey. But I should note that the realistic expectation is that he's never going to be more than a depth guy. Hopefully he finds new life in Detroit. Either way, we get a 2nd, which is good.
