    2019 Trade Deadline

I think it's posturing while technically being completely truthful. Would Holland like to re-sign these players? Yes. Does he intend to "step up discussions"? Yes. Does the fact that he intends to step up discussions mean he's going to fight tooth-and-nail to keep these guys in Detroit? Nah.

    Official 2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread

Duchene's a good player. A couple years ago I was in favor of kicking the tires on him, in a trade context. However, with Larkin showing that he can be at the very least a serviceable 1C, and with the addition of a projected top-six C in Veleno, and with Larkin and Veleno and Duchene all being pretty similar players, and with Duchene conveniently having a breakthrough season in a contract year...my interest isn't very strong, even though all it would cost to get him is money. The idea of committing to a 1-2 of Larkin-Duchene doesn't really get my HYPE! juices flowing. We do have a hole at 2C tho, and that's definitely one of the areas you can point to and say, "A modest improvement there would be huge for this team." I'd be content to wait for Veleno and, perhaps, our top pick in the upcoming draft -- but that's probably at least a couple years of waiting. Playing in the NHL as a 20-year-old is one thing. Being a solid 2C on a good playoff team as a 20-year-old is quite another. Do the Wings want to go another year or two or three with only one legitimate top-six centerman and, potentially, a surplus of scoring wingers? Suppose we get Kakko. And suppose Zadina breaks out next season. Add them to Mantha, Athanasiou, Bertuzzi, Rasmussen. That's a group of wingers that could carry a team into the playoffs through sheer force of talent alone, provided your center group isn't Larkin, Nielsen, Glendening, de la Rose. *shudder* So I can appreciate both sides of the Duchene argument.

    2019 Trade Deadline

Sorry. Was alluding to Sutergate and how that basically ushered in the era of "Detroit is in the mix...Detroit has rolled out the red carpet...I've gotta think Detroit has a real good shot here...Detroit has been informed that [player] will be signing with [literally any organization that isn't the Wings]." Don't you do this to me, krbro. Don't you build me up (build me up), buttercup baby, just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around. No but srsly, I agree that it looks like a good marriage on paper. I've just gotten used to thinking there's a good fit there and then watching the player sign elsewhere.

That makes sense re: the NTC. He's at the end of his career and he really likes being in Detroit, so if he's gonna be dumped somewhere for a measly 3rd-round pick, it makes sense that he'd want to have a say in the matter. That being said, I'm mostly expecting him to stay put. I feel like he's only producing this season because Blashill has gone out of his way to give him all the minutes and opportunities and leeway he can possibly handle despite the fact that he's basically playing beer league hockey at this point. I'm surprised we haven't seen him killing penalties. I dunno. Maybe he'd be a good fit on a team that's sorta playing with house money, e.g. Calgary, NYI.

Honestly, I hadn't even considered the college/rights/FA angle. Given our recent track record in the "wooing top college players who can pick where they want to play" department, I'm guessing he'd "NOPE!" the heck out of our gravitational pull and sign with the Wild because he grew up in Minnesota and played his college hockey there and his dad owns a farm there.
