And he has a history of playoff heroics.

I believe it's the standard NTC where the player provides a list of "DO NOT WANT" teams. Maybe Nyquist likes being a Red Wing enough that he'd be willing to sign a really team-friendly new deal. But if I'm Nyquist, I'm probably looking to Get Paid. He deserves that bread and I'm sure he could get it on the open market. So, yeah. Unless he's really gung ho about staying in Detroit and is willing to sign a team-friendly deal, I'm looking to trade him and I'm not expecting him to come back. I think it's a different situation with Howard; I think he's more valuable to the Wings and I doubt any of the offers he'd get on the open market would be much bigger than what we'd be willing to offer him -- and goalies don't seem to get you much on the trade market these days. So I'm ok with not trading him. I trust Holland, for the most part. He knows what's up. Link that s***.

Nylander stuff: NHL Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs [My NHL Trade Rumors] Flyers looking at Nylander The Leafs likely won't get full value if they trade Nylander Nylander's last season in Toronto even if they re-sign him? Elliotte Friedman is arguably the hockey world's most credible rumormonger not named Bob McKenzie, so the fact that he firmly believes Nylander is on the way out of Toronto is pretty big. I doubt the Wings are in on Nylander. And maybe that's kind of a shame. Because, honestly, I think something like Mantha/Athanasiou + one or two of [insert long list of viable sweeteners, e.g. Nyquist, Glendening, Hronek] is pretty close to equal value.

Thanks for the insight, scout bro. I don't know much about him, but what you're saying makes sense.

For all we know, Zykov has an attitude problem or something. I mean, Carolina felt it was acceptable to give him up for nothing and they're a team that's always looking for scoring depth. *shrug*

HYPE! LGRW! -
Counterpoint: Refusing to move Nyquist doesn't necessarily guarantee that Nyquist will re-sign with the Wings.
-
Tatar had term on his deal tho. And Vegas had picks to burn. I think a 1st is a reasonable expectation.

Shut down LGW.com. Pack it in. This post will never be topped.

Depends on what exactly that compensation is, naturally. I guess I'd put it this way: The offer would have to really get my HYPE! juices flowing. Sort of an "I'll know the right offer when I see it" kind of thing. I'm assuming Holland's thinking the same thing, though I'm sure his definition of "too good to refuse" differs a bit from mine.

Fair enough. When I say lose confidence, I'm talking more of a long-term thing. As in, like, if we went into this season with Bernier and Sateri as our goalies, our record right now is probably godawful and everyone is probably miserable. Stretch that out over an entire season or two (or more) and it could seriously hamper the rebuild effort, even if it means passing on a promising young talent like Bokk. Holland has said he wants next season to be the true start of the turnaround. Devellano has said he and Holland are impatient people. All things considered, I don't think we move Howard unless the return is too good to pass up and/or Holland is confident that he can get Howard-level goaltending from another goalie for the next couple of years if Howard signs elsewhere in the summer.
-
I guess it largely depends on how confident I am that we could get Howard back in free agency, or how confident I am that Allen (or someone else) would be a solid replacement. Weak goaltending can crater a rebuilding team's confidence. Barring a really remarkable offer, I think you kind of have to stick with Howard for now.
-
Nah. I think Howard giving this team a chance to win every night is more valuable to the rebuild effort.
-
They were off limits in the O'Reilly trade negotiations, and Howard isn't O'Reilly. So, realistically, we're probably looking at, like, Allen + middling futures. (The Blues don't have a 2019 1st.)
