I reckon Yzerman would like to avoid making a big splash in free agency this summer, if possible. Because, yeah, we're probably a few years from being An Actual NHL Team, and also because Yzerman's track record suggests he's not big on signing big UFAs. (Granted, he had Stamkos and Hedman right from the get-go.) At the same time tho, we can't continue this way. I feel Yzerman has to throw the team a bone on the back end. Nemeth hasn't impressed me at all; he's basically Ericsson. Cholowski is Kindl until he proves otherwise. Bowey...exists. If Seider's a Red Wing next season and we want him paired with a veteran, I'd like that veteran to be someone with some scoring chops. We've trained ourselves to reflexively say there are no quick and easy fixes. And for the most part it's probably true. But I'd rate Krug as one of the league's elite PP QBs and so I think it's possible he'd give our power play a big boost. Even if the power play goes from unmitigated disaster to merely middling, that would be huge for the team and the rebuild. It'd eliminate one of our biggest morale-killers. It'd allow us to be more competitive. It'd mean more key goals, which would boost confidence, which everyone on our team is seriously lacking. If we get Lafreniere or Byfield, I think Yzerman definitely makes a big move or two or three in the hopes of making the playoffs next season.

He's a one-dimensional power play specialist who I wouldn't necessarily trust to do much good in a top-pairing role at even-strength. Thing is, our power play is indescribably awful (consistently costing us games for the past three years) and our D group isn't much better. So maybe he'd actually be worth what many would consider an overpayment (in free agency, not in a trade). DeKeyser -- Hronek Krug -- Seider Who -- Cares

I'm hearing he's a good passer and good playmaker with a good shot. I'm guessing the serious knee problems probably put his mobility right around Nyquist 2016-to-present levels (no explosive speed but quick in short bursts). So it's possible.

I tuned out for a couple of years after The Devastation of '09. Granted, that was largely because of life stuff; I simply did not have enough free time to follow hockey obsessively. But there was also a burnout element to it. Even with the team being as dominant as it was, for whatever reason I'd gotten to the point where being a hardcore fan felt more like a stressful job than a source of entertainment and a form of release. Point being, I wouldn't fault you for going on indefinite hockey hiatus. But don't do it for football.

I am not emotionally prepared to contemplate a bottom-five finish in 2021. One terrible season at a time for me plz thx.

I do kinda wonder if Ottaw's treasure trove of 2020 picks isn't kinda harshin' Yzerman's vibe. Finishing below the Sens in the standings and watching them make 800 picks in the first two rounds would be absolute rock bottom for this organization, unless perhaps we get Lafreniere and the Sens don't even pick in the top three. Anyway, point is, I wouldn't be surprised if Yzerman is setting up to go hunting for 2020 1sts. Cornering the market on cheap, flippable 23-year-old RFAs could be part of that. I felt we all needed an injection of HYPE! after last night's game.
