Man, if Sammy had done it, LGWers would be throwing bricks through his house's windows and leaving bags of flaming s*** on his doorstep. Anyhow, here's to a speedy recovery.

Three words: El Oh El.
-
Sammy's one of the best bargains in the league, by the way. If we're going to point fingers at "overpaid"/"useless" Wings, there are better targets.
-
Leino is not going to supplant Sammy. In all likelihood, Leino won't even make the cut. I should just put that in my sig.

(Lilja?)

I'm liking Sawchuck. About Leino -- if he makes the team, he'll be playing on the fourth line. So it's reliastic. Kinda.
-
Conklin. Howard's not going to wilt away and die just because he has to spend another year on the farm -- quite the opposite, in all likelihood.
-
Think about it, though: absolute worst-case scenario is he misses the entire season (which isn't going to happen, but let's just say it does). Even then the Wings win because they wouldn't face him in the playoffs.

Who...are you?

I figured those would be the two names. Avery's a lame duck of a pest and the Wings handled Ott just fine this past postseason. I'm really happy to have Downey back in the fold, don't get me wrong. Just saying.

As does practically every relevant media outlet -- even the ones on the Brian Burke bandwagon: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writ...x.html#?eref=T1

Just out of curiosity, who on the Stars qualifies as a straight-up goon?
-
A 2nd-pairing guy can definitely be considered, but yeah, Kronwall would need a really dynamite season to get on the ballot. I'm not worried about Ozzie. The key is the backup; if he's got a good one who can handle a pretty considerable workload in the regular season, he'll be in good shape come the postseason.

Leino practices with Red Wings for first time

I suppose Leino might also count as an exception. But as someone already said, he's property of the Wings -- right? -

Not going to happen. Management likes taking time in developing its prospects so that, the hope is, they're fully prepared by the time they hit the ice. There's really no need for the Wings to rush any of their prospects, given the way the pipelines are set up. The only conceivable exceptions would be Howard (should Ozzie and/or Conklin falter) and basically any prospect who's at risk of wilting away on the farm -- which I don't really think is the case with any of our guys. -
Ouch.

I figured, but I've heard people raise that point without any sarcasm.
-
Is there room for all of the talent the Wings have and also sufficient playing time for young players in the system? Gee! I dunno, Scott! You tell me! Holmstrom - Datsyuk - Hossa Hudler - Zetterberg - Franzen Cleary - Filppula - Samuelsson Maltby - Draper- Kopecky Lidstrom - Rafalski Kronwall - Stuart Lebda - Chelios
-
He's produced everywhere he's played. He's a committed to two-way play. He came here for an unselfish amount so that he wouldn't handicap the team. He thinks and plays like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. He's laughing it up on the bench with Mac and praising Lidstrom and Chelios in that video. I can totally see why someone would be worried about chemistry. ...

The problem with this thread is that there are two strands of discussion going on -- one concerning the simple question of who should be taken if it were a straight-up question, and another taking all considerations into account.

Burke's eyes are on Toronto. And he's the kind of vindictive assninja who will drive an organization into the ground if he knows he's on the outs with it.

Leino's not going to bump Sammy from the team. There's a good chance Leino won't even make the cut. -
Hossa could conceivably be this team's #1 forward by the end of the season, possibly the league's most dangerous scorer. No joke. If he says he's willling to take, say, 7 flat to stay here and Mule says he wants close to what Hossa's making, Mule can take a walk.
