    Eaves Cleared to Play

    Should we pursue Petr Sykora?

I'll agree that he's a "proven" 20 goal scorer, but I don't think that guarantees he will score 20 goals. Have to remember he's played one NHL season since being waived and released mid-season by Minnesota and then not being able to find work in the NHL... Regardless, I'd pass. We can't exactly just let go of Samuelsson as easily as you insinuate, plus we already have a log jam up front especially after Helm comes off IR. We also have Nyquist, Tatar and Andersson (and possibly Sheahan) who can all take shifts at the NHL level. If we add anything, it needs to be depth on defense.

Teams Must Comply with 23man Roster Limit by Tomorrow

Yep. Clock's ticking for Emmerton or Mursak.

Because he can still go to GR without waived. Emmerton can't be demoted without being waived and he would most likely be claimed which would subtract some of the depth we have up front. I'm guessing Holland and company think Nyquist is better served logging 1st line minutes in GR than playing on the 3rd line for the big club. Hmmm. Acording to Mlive it's going to Helm on IR now instead of Eaves. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/team/1358517705-963-616/red-wings-patrick-eaves-cleared.html

    Lilja Placed on Waivers

Maybe he's the next Islander. Garth Snow has been having a field day claiming players from waivers the past few days.

Kindl "Day to Day" with sore groin

At some point Babcock stated that Lashoff is pretty much #8 on the defense depth chart and then Almquist comes in at #9. I'm sure at some point we'll good a good look at Lashoff this season. He's the next candidate to fill the seat in the pressbox that is currently reserved for Kindl, which was also once Meech's seat.

Sounds like he's looked good in GR this year too. However, I would rather he pile up time in the AHL net than have to ride the pine in the NHL if Howard or Gustavsson go down. Joey Mac is certainly no stranger to pine sitting.

McDonald IS on the roster, and will start the season on IR. Unless Holland can work a trade to get him on another team, he'll be waived and sent to GR if he clears. However, if Howard or Gustavsson are injured when MacDonald is healthy, Mac will stay on the big club until the injured goalie is healthy. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/01/red_wings_goalie_joey_macdonal_2.html I actually hope he gets healthy and sticks around. Even though he doesn't want to play 3rd fiddle and go to GR, he'll give the team solid depth in goal down the stretch and into the playoffs.

They changed it back for the new CBA. Burke bitched about it at every trade deadline.

Here's an article from the Free Press that mentions MacDonald's back issue. http://www.freep.com/article/20130112/SPORTS05/130112038/detroit-red-wings-Physicals-done-but-schedule-camp-start-still-not-official?odyssey=nav%7Chead I'm not saying it's complicated, just curious that's all.

He must already be on IR or there's something we don't know about, because his is still under contract to the Red Wings for this season.

McDonald hasn't been in GR... Mrazek and McCollum have been playing in goal for GR. MacDonald is still part of the Red Wings on a 1-way deal for $550k and will either need to be waived, traded or placed on IR depending on his status. As far as who gets waived, my money is on Emmerton. Mursak has far more to offer the 3rd/4th lines that he and Emmerton will be fighting for playing time on.

Just to be sure: Forwards 1. Datsyuk 2. Zetterberg 3. Filppula 4. Franzen 5. Brunner 6. Samuelsson 7. Bertuzzi 8. Cleary 9. Helm 10. Tootoo 11. Abdelkader 12. Miller 13. Mursak 14. Emmerton LTIR - Eaves Defense 1. Kronwall 2. Ericsson 3. Smith 4. White 5. Colaiacovo 6. Quincey 7. Kindl Goaltenders 1. Howard 2. Gustavsson ??- MacDonald Looks like it's at 24. Colaiacovo just has a nagging shoulder strain, shouldn't be out long term. The only person that needs to be waived is McDonald, but from what I've heard he is still having back problems from last year and will probably start on IR.

    Wade Redden

I wouldn't call him a bust or a blown 1st rounder just yet. He's been a serviceable NHL dman and D-men don't usually enter their prime until they hit the late 20's anyway. And on paper he did improve over his first season. He still has some time to prove himself, although the clock is ticking in Detroit I'm sure. I'm betting if he got some more consistent playing time on a rebuilding team, he'd have a season like Quincey did in LA. If you want to talk about busts or blown first rounders, make a thread about Thomas McCollum...

    Wade Redden

It was 07 that Quincey logged a chunk of playoff time for us. In my opinion, I think it was good for Quincey to leave anyway. If we would've waived Meech instead, he would've spent half of the season in the pressbox keeping Chelios company instead of making an imediate impact like he did with the Kings.

The way teams were vastly overpaying for dmen this past summer, I'm sure Kindl wouldn't even last 1 second unclaimed on the waiver wire. Same thing happened with Ritola and Quincey, and they had barely proved they were NHL calibre players.

    Bouwmeester

I wouldn't pay too much for him. His name has been tossed around as a possible amnesty buyout candidate for the Flames. If his play doesn't get better this season for Calgary, Holland might be able to just sign him this summer. It's also risky considering he would add a $6.7mil cap hit to a team that is going to need cap space to re-sign or replace potential UFA's Filppula, Howard, White, Brunner, Miller and Cleary and potential RFA's Nyquist, Smith, Kindl and Andersson (who can't go back to GR next year without being waived).
  19. Who really knows though. Nabokov pulled the same crap before he decided to bite the bullet and play for the Islanders. He had a decent year and ended up resigning too.

I agree with the shortened season part 100%, not as much with the salary cap part. We could actually see more reclamation projects with the new CBA. Lets take Redden for an example. Lets imagine tt's a full season and Holland signs him up on a 1 year 2-way deal for $750k/$200k a year. Lets say he comes to camp and looks decent but not enough to unseat the seven other dmen. He can be waived, and if he passes go to GR. The difference now, is that the new CBA got rid of re-entry waivers, so we don't have to bury him in GR knowing that if we recall him and he gets claimed we lose him and have to add a $375k cap hit. Basically eliminating what happened to Meech in his last year with the organization. We had to send him to GR and leave him there since we would lose him on waivers and cough up half his salary against the cap if we tried to recall him. Even though these reclaimation projects might not work out, they'll give teams more useable experienced depth for the farm.

    Wade Redden

I also doubt Redden would sign with the Red Wings. He probably wants to go to a team where he knows he'll have the best shot at being on their NHL roster. I don't think Holland would risk having to waive someone on the team already to make room for a 35YO gamble. I will however bet that Holland wouldn't hesitate to take this gamble had we not signed Colaiacovo. Redden perfectly fits Hollands favored soft one dimensional veteran dman mold. What we really need is some experienced depth on D for GR. We're missing someone like Doug Janik that can come up if injuries pile up. Brian Lashoff is our #8 guy right now, and after that it's looking pretty thin.

    Knuble Good Fit For Wings?

Yes, the max is 23. We technically have 23 on the roster at the moment, Eaves in on long-term IR. The chances of Knuble signing are slim. I read somewhere that he asked if he could join as a tryout and Holland obliged. It's probably just to put himself on the map for when teams may come looking for some forward depth when injuries pile up. Worked for Dan LaCouture when we invited him to camp in 2005(I think).

I think you can do a lot worse in the cheapshot artist department... He's no Matt Cooke or Raffi Torres. I think we'll see a lot of similarities between himself and Dallas Drake.

^We haven't even see Tootoo play yet and he's already trash? I wouldn't go as far as calling Redden another teams trash. He was being paid to be a top pair guy but was playing more like a 3rd pair guy. He got put in a sticky situation and had to be barried in the minors so NYR could pay someone else that cap space. He'll probably make it as a #6/7 dman on another team. Red Wings however, don't have the space. Pass.

    Brunnstrom on waivers

I may be wrong, but I don't think he has to for 2 reasons: -He has a 2-way deal that pays him $105k at the AHL level. Anything over that number constitutes re-entry. -He hasn't played more than 80 combined NHL games in the past 2 seasons, or more than 40 in the past season.
