He has no upside, he's cleared waivers before. He's a fringe bottom pairing d-man.

Red Wings trade Vanek to FLA for (D) Dylan McIlrath and Conditional 3rd Round Pick
greenrebellion replied to FireCaptain's topic in General
Exactly, not sure why people don't get this. -
Can't really blame Holland for this. If a team would've paid more than a third than Holland would've traded him there. Not sure why someone wouldn't give up a second for Vanek.
-
Well there is this from hockey's future as well: McIlrath spent the 2015-16 season with the New York Rangers, seeing lower pairing minutes when in the lineup and appearing in 34 of 72 games in his first NHL season. Envisioned as a Scott Stevens-type shutdown defenseman when he was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, McIlrath is a liability at times against skilled, mobile forwards. He appears headed towards a career as more of physical intimidating third-pairing defenseman.

McIlrath is nothing to get excited about.
-
Probably because that's not all we got!

Given the dead weight contracts we have on the books through 2020 or so, whether or not Kronwall stays or goes is irrelevant as this team won't really be incredibly competitive until cap hits like Abdelkader, Helm, Zetterberg, Ericsson, Dekeyser and a well past his prime by 2020 Nielsen. Kronwall wouldn't bring back anything of value anyway.

If a serious injury occurs, this forum will meltdown.

Can't be true. Would be the dumbest move in the history of sports.
-
Or this is the first time they've been in last place at the deadline for 25+ years.

Seriously, whatever we get for him will be excellent asset management by Holland. Our GM certainly makes mistakes, but this could be a big win for him...
-
Keep kicking tires Kenny!

I'm sure that's what he's asking for, but that's how you negotiate, start super high and find some sort of middle ground.

Brendan Smith traded to Rangers for 2nd (2018) and 3rd (2017) Round Draft Picks
greenrebellion replied to ShanahanMan's topic in General
When they say its a "weak" draft, they are really only talking about the top handful of picks with no super star standouts. Its not like magically this entire draft class is way weaker than other years. -
In a way, it is too bad we aren't looking to move Green. He could get a pretty insane return given that he wouldn't even be a rental for a team, and we could hold salary back to make it easy for a team to take him on. You'd have to think you could get a VERY nice return for him. I get that Holland wants to try to ice a competitive team next season, but this is such a great opportunity to pick up some picks/prospects. I guess we can always move him at the deadline next season.

Indeed, definitely looks like prices are inflated at this deadline...even more so than usual. -
Now if he can pull a first rounder for Vanek, I think we can all be pretty pleased with Holland's first go around as a seller at the deadline.
-
Damn son, Kenny really is kicking some tires aggressively!

Ok, my bitching about Holland may have been premature. Nice move. We have too many middling D'men and this will give some younger guys a shot at increased roles. -
If they get a first for him, not really selling that low. But, I would agree with you, not worth getting rid of him if all we can get is a middle round pick.
-
Is Holland kicking tires today?
-
Holland is probably satisfied after trading Jurco. He'll come out later this week and say he kicked some tires but wasn't willing to part with Smith or Vanek for less than they are worth
-
What good is Smith to us for the next 3 seasons, is Kenny out of his god damn mind?
-
He's probably asking for a first born child in addition to a first round pick.
-
Smith was a no brainer move, can't believe they are trying to extend him...to what end? By the time this team is competitive again, Smith will be past his prime. Besides, how do we even have cap room for him. I guess I'll hold my judgement until the first, but Vanek and Smith should be moved. No brainers.
