Shawn Horcoff to join Red Wings in player development role
toby91_ca replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Yes, his wife is from Michigan. -
Yeah, 50 shots, 44 saves....the box score I was using wasn't refreshed....or it was updated long after the game ended.
-
Total shots were 46, he let 6 in....40 saves. Not a good stat line, .870 save percentage. However, he made a least a few unbelievable saves, score should have been much worse.

In 5 min of ice time, Crosby has 1 goal, 3 points, +4, 4 shots on goal and 80% on draws. In terms of US beating Canada, anything is possible, but I don't take much from their loss to the US last week....Price sucked, playing his first game in 9-10 months + until the games are for real, you can't really tell. I do think any team is capable of beating any other team.
-
Crosby's line is dominant so far.

Pretty good stats for team Canada: Career NHL games: 14,248 (Rank 1st of 8) Career NHL goals: 3,662 (1st) Career NHL assists: 6,262 (1st) Career NHL points: 9,924 (1st) Career NHL wins: 564 (1st) Average Age: 29.1 (5th) Average Height: 6’1 3/4” (T-1st) Average Weight: 207.2 lbs (2nd) Stanley Cups: 15 (1st)

Surprisingly for Detroit (since is has seemed so SWE heavy lately), Canadians have still made up the majority of the roster, even last year: 05/06 (Yzerman's last year) - only considered players who played 15 or more games: CAN - 11 SWE - 6 US - 4 CZK - 2 RUS - 1 15/16: CAN - 8 (2 more that played 10 games) SWE - 5 US - 5 RUS - 2 CZK - 2 SLK - 2 FIN - 1

Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

If this turns into reality, can't complain, increases for everyone over last year except for 2 (Nielsen...pretty much the same, but I'd ignore because he's a new player + Abdelkader...only small decrease and looks to be due to a few less games). -

I don't think 50 points is a stretch at all for Vanek. There have been far more bold predictions made around here than suggesting he could get 50 points. I'm not saying he will, but if he ends up scoring 50 pionts this year, it certainly won't come as a big surprise. He's certainly declined, but has still produced reasonably. See below for career stats (? for me may be whether he can maintain for long season....see big stats he put up in lockout shortened year (stats in brackets are pro-rated to 82 games): '06 - 25g, 48pts (25g, 49pts) '07 - 43g, 84pts (43g, 84pts) '08 - 36g, 64pts (36g, 64pts) '09 - 40g, 64pts (45g, 72pts) '10 - 28g, 53pts (32g, 61pts) '11 - 32g, 73pts (33g, 75pts) '12 - 26g, 61pts (27g, 64pts) '13 - 20g, 41pts (43g, 88pts) - lockout year '14 - 27g, 68pts (28g, 71pts) '15 - 21g, 52pts (22g, 53pts) '16 - 18g, 41pts (20g, 45pts) Career average over 82 games = 32g, 66pts -
Might be the most intense games for them...trying to show what they are made of...prove that they should be selected for the big team when it comes time.

Haven't been able to watch any of the NA vs. CZK game today due to work, but checking box score, McDavid is playing a ton....surprising, they clearly aren't taking the Canada approach which basically rolls the lines, with the top guys only getting around 16-17 min. Half-way through the game, McDavid is over 11 min.....by comparison, Larkin is just over 4 min. Edit....I also heard an interesting comment on the radio the other day as well regarding a discussion as to what chance this team had of doing damage in this tournament. I can't remember who it was, but it wasn't some nobody hack....he didn't think they'd win a game (in the real tournament). He thought Team Europe is clearly the worst team, so results against them haven't shown much I guess (they are in the other division once the games start for real.

Ha...good point
-
As opposed to Joe Louis the what?
-
Ahh....well, he was 2nd line centre last season and now Datsyuk is gone, so there shouldn't be any threat of falling out of top 6.
-
That's the first thing I thought when I saw this as well....looks nothing like Yzerman. The Howe drawing is okay.
-
Why is it a waste? I get it if we are talking about regular season type play, but with this tournament, for most teams, you aren't going to be getting 1st line playing 20 minutes....minutes are going to be more evenly distributed. Are you suggested he should play wing?

Signed Glendening signs 4-year, $1.8m AAV extension
toby91_ca replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
I have no problem with Glendening's contract. It's high for a 4th liner, but I think he's an above average 4th liner, so it's not bad. Citzikas, while better than Glendening in my opinion, is overpaid for sure. There was a lot of rumblings earlier this year when he signed. Fans love him in NY, but they didn't love the cap hit. FYI, based on my looking into salaries, the $1.455M for 4th liner centre probably hasn't moved much at all....average for 4th line is still below that, but I didn't look based on LW, C or RW. -
signed Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV
toby91_ca replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
So, I'll admit, when I saw Helm and $3.85 I thought, WOW, that's a lot, but it wasn't based on any real facts, just a gut reaction....perhaps it was out of date...guys are making more, etc. So I quickly checked the real numbers to see how your buckets match up. I think you've estimated pretty well, except the range you've given for 3rd liners seems way out of wack. Here's what I came up with purely based on the top earners (forwards) for each team (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, etc.). The numbers here are the averages of all 30 teams. So, there is some holes you can poke (when did they sign, UFA vs. RFA, etc.), but I think this is the closest to reality you can do without spending too much time on it, since it really isn't worth it. 4th - $0.81 - $1.2M 3rd - $1.46 - $2.6M 2nd - $3.18 - $4.44M 1st - $5.09 - $7.14M So, if everyone thinks Helm is a 3rd liner (which he is on DET based on ice time), then $3.85M looks like more than just a little overpaid. HOWEVER, some teams have better quality 3rd liners than others, warranting being paid more than the average....which I think is warranted for Helm, but I just think it's gone way further than what's warranted and then tack on the years and NTC that makes me go WOW! No big deal, but it doesn't make me go WOW! Edit: If I was really upset and felt strongly about it, which I'm not...no big deal to me, but if I was, I'd try to put in the time to come up with comparables....at his level of offsensive production + all the other intangibles, etc....try to see where he fits vs. other players in the league with similar attributes. Maybe you'd see that a $20M contract makes sense. -

Yes, I absolutely do think you need to score to get big dollars and yes, it comes down to two stats, goals and assists. This isn't necessarily my opinion though, I just think this is the way it is. Whether I agree with that is a different question, one I haven't spent much time thinking about. I think I'd tend to lean in that direction as well though. My guess is that teams have historically paid this way (to be clear, we are still only talking about forwards) because teams feel that all the other things forwards can do to bring value can be taught and gained through hard work. A lot of people feel that you really need god given talent to produce points in the league, no teaching or hard work is going to change that. Of course, teaching hard work, etc. may improve that and give you points you wouldn't have otherwise had, but you aren't going to go from 30pts a year to 90pts a year because of hard work and teaching. A lot of coaches feel they can mold a player on the other aspects of the game though. So, while a player is very valuable, if they don't score, they don't necessarily get paid too much because teams feel they can replace them and mold another player to do the same thing. Now Helm is a little different though, he's got top end speed, which is similar to scoring in that you can improve a little through hard work, but in reality, you either have it or you don't. Anyway, if anyone has me in a basket of Helm bashers, you shouldn't. I simply think he's overpaid, I still want him. I think he's getting too much per year, 5 years is too long and NTC on top of that is really strange to me. I think most teams are moving away from that and you'd think the guys that would get it would be limited to "superstars." - I know it hasn't always been that way and several people were getting these for a while, I just thought most moved away from it. -

I would hope everyone agrees that there is more than just scoring. You can't have a team simply filled with scorers. Team USA in the World Cup is a good example of that...there are certain players that would be on the team if that was the main focus (e.g. Kessel). There are a lot of really good forwards in the league, bring tons of value, but don't score a lot. However, to get paid the bigger dollars, you need to score. So from my perspective, I'd tend to look at stats when a forward is getting paid a lot, because to get paid a lot, you should have stats to back it up. I think you need to separate that from the thought process as to whether you think the player is good or not, or whether you want him on the team. Helm is a great recent example for me. I like him, think he's a good, valuable player to the team, but I do think he's overpaid. -
I don't think Simmons is the most respected guy in the business, but I also don't think he's an Eklund type either.

You're probably right, but a guy on a great team, that does all the little things right, etc., isn't paid as much as Helm is being paid....great teams probably can't afford that because they probably have much more expensive players at the top end and the players doing all the little things right are making $1-3M. 20 goals is a long, long way off for him too, he's never been in shouting distance of 20. I honestly think the interest was there because of his speed. Everyone places a very high premium on speed in this league, with good reason. There are so many players that have the skill, but just can't make it in the NHL because they lack the skating ability (these are the good AHL players). You have to think that teams are thinking that he's got great speed, so he'll develop the scoring tough....well, I think it's pretty clear that's not coming. There's nothing wrong with that, you can be valuable to a team without scoring 30 goals. I haven't done the research, but i doubt there are many comparables in the league to him and his salary + term. Maybe there is and maybe I'm way off. The NTC was the laugher for me on top of it all. -

Oh I know and I agree that Dreger is one of the best, I just think he was fed bogus info and Helm's agent must have made it seem he had good offers from others. It makes zero sense to me. He's a decent player, but is easily replaced....he's the type of player that should be making league average in my opinion. -

I'd like to understand what teams were offering him more than $20M + no trade clause.....that for a 12-15 goal and 25-30 pt guy does not add up to a discount to me. -
