That's not entirely true, I don't think Russia played against any of the teams Sweden played against did they? Your point is still valid though.

No contest in CAN/SWE, 6-0 Canada.

Been watching most of game 3 and it's been absolute domination. 4-1 now, but could be 10 if TB goalie hasn't been spectacular. PIT is headed for 50+ shots and are outshooting TB so far in the series like 120 - 60. -
Finland beating Canada was a bit of a surprise. Not too much of a surprise though, I think those were the two powerhouse teams in their division at least. Canada losing 4-0 was surprising to me though....I think their GF - GA stat leading into that game was 34-4.

I saw bits and pieces of the game (most of the 1st, half of the 2nd and 3rd). I flipped back to the game about 30 seconds after the OT goal....that happens when the goal is scored in the first 40 seconds. The level of scrutiny Crosby has been under is pretty incredible though. So many people just can't get past goals and assists. I totally get it, that's what he's paid to produce, but he was a monster out there for a lot of the shifts I saw, only thing missing was getting the puck past the goalie (which is the most important I guess). Anyway, I did see the aftermath and they made a pretty big deal out of Crosby having 47 career playoff goals, but that was his 1st career playoff OT goal. Funny stat, Mario Lemieux didn't score a single playoff OT goal in his career. -

Interesting that Callahan didn't even have a hearing for his hit. I thought it was much worse and dangerous than the hit that Letang himself was suspended for against WSH. You have to imagine it's because Letang came back later in the game. The attention to whether someone was injured or not on a play and how that factors into a suspension is getting a bit overboard if you ask me. I get it, but the act itself has to carry far more weight. -

The hit was bad enough, but the worst part of it was that he got his forearm up behind Letang's head and drove the head down into the boards. Really dangerous, wonder if Letang will be back...huge blow if not. -

While most are probably picking PIT in this one, I think it might be a pretty tight series. While TB is not nearly as strong of a team as WSH, they may match up better against PIT. Their speed is going to be a factor. It's not always the best teams that win, I think I've mentioned it before, a team can really struggle against one team and a different team handles quite easily (e.g. team A can get blown out by team B, but easily beat Team C....that doesn't mean that team C couldn't blow out team B). Teams just match up better against certain teams than others. -

PIT was the best team in the league dating back before the All Star break. Whoever gets through the East will be in tough against STL if they get through though, they look pretty strong right now. -
I think we're back to pre lockout offense and penalty calling when it comes to obstruction though.

You can't always use points to judge. Last night for example, Crosby had dominant shifts at times and set up glorious scoring chances that didn't end up as goals. It wasn't necessarily because his teammates screwed up either, it was mostly due to Holtby, who I must say, was not given enough credit by me during the regular season. He was outstanding. Ovechkin picked up 2 points last night, but it's not like he did much to get the points, he simply happened to be one of the 2 guys that touched the puck before someone put it in. EDIT: I already mentioned it earlier as well, it really isn't a big shock that WSH was eliminated by PIT. Not because they are choke artists, but because PIT was that good. PIT had a better record than WSH from Dec or Jan on. It was pretty much 2 evenly matched teams, shouldn't really be considered an upset no matter who won. The media will keep bringing up Crosby and Ovechkin's head to head records though and it doesn't look good at all for Ovechkin. It's really not fair to keep doing that when we are dealing with a team sport, but I guess I understand it. -

Chicago is not built around Kane and he's certainly not the leader of the team. -

I heard a theory the other day on Washington and why they'll never win. Ovechkin hasn't been out of the 2nd round in his career. The thought is that you'll never win if your star player is a winger...they just aren't important enough. If you have a stud C, D or G, you have a better chance. I think the person had a bit of a point, but if the team still has great players at other positions (like Washington does) it shouldn't matter. I do think that you can't build your team around a winger though. If I think back throughout the history of the game, I can't think of any winning teams where that was the case. -

Not sure why there is a make up call on a penalty that was black and white (high sticking). The interference call was extremely weak, especially for playoffs and this series. I'd bet after it's over they'll go back to almost nothing called the rest of the way -

Hard to read Tampa. They had a very easy road to the conference finals, because of the schedule, they were lucky to avoid both WSH and PIT. You have to believe they'll be a huge underdog in the next round. That said, they'll be the fresher team and they have a very good goalie, so anything can happen. PIT still has a question mark in goal, we'll see how that goes, WSH can still come back if Holtby keeps playing like he did in game 5. -
Secondary scoring is actually extremely important. If you don't have it, teams will focus entirely on shutting down primary scoring and then you are toast. It is pretty easy beating teams in the playoffs who have very thin forward lines.

So, someone needs to explain this to me, I thought linesman were able to call major high sticking penalties. Oshie gets a stick near the stomach and he snaps his head back, falls to his knees and grabs his face...absolutely disgusting, I understand embellishment, but absolute faking like that drives me nuts....back on topic, neither ref called anything, but then the linesman convinced them there was a penalty....but only 2 minutes, can that happen? I'm guessing Oshie is getting fined tomorrow though, not that it will matter. -

To be fair, Pittsburgh was probably one of, if not the best, team in the league since December or January. Pittsburgh also owned them in the regular season I think (which usually doesn't mean much though) -

If you've proven yourself to be better than all the rookies (McDavid), I don't really have a problem with playing less games. It's not like an MVP award where you can say "how can he be MVP if he missed so many games" - I don't think he'll win, because of the games missed, but I'm sure that's the thought process for people that voted for him.

One really interesting fact if PIT manages to win it all this year, will be similar circumstances as their 2009 win...both years, they replaced their coach mid-season. -

Media has really pumped up this series as Crosby vs. Ovechkin, showing all the head to head stats, etc leading up to it and through. That was going to be obvious. But as I've watched the series, on CBC, they've spent a lot of time talking about Ovechkin's legacy and how he really needs to win this series. A loss against a different team wouldn't be as bad, but he can't lose to Pittsburgh....basically talking about if he loses, his legacy isn't going to be good, it's over. A bit of an exaggeration there, but that has been the gist of the discussion. So, I've been listening and thinking to myself...."really", a bit much don't you think? Ovechkin is simply trying to win, he's not going to be caring that much about legacy, etc. However, after having watched and after last night's game, I think he does care about that stuff, you could really see it on his face and in his actions on the ice. Ryan Whitney (former penguin) was on the radio this morning and they asked him, Crosby really hates Ovechkin doesn't he....what does he say in the room, etc....anyway, he said that if Crosby had anything crabby to say, it would be with a few guys over dinner, not in the room in front of the whole team. He said they have respect for each other, but they're definitely not friends. I found that interesting. -
