    [Retired] Official Lockout Thread

I think there is some positives to take out of the current bargaining sessions. Why work over the weekend on lower issue items (i.e. non-economic issues) unless you really are feeling a sense of urgency? I was just watching Hockey Central where a comment was made that his source suggested communications were made to players that they should be getting ready as big things may be happening soon. To be fair, he suggested that's what he had heard....doesn't know how much truth there is to it. It is very hard for something like that to be true because you can't say something big will happen in this type of bargaining session unless you are speaking from a side that is planning on caving to the others demands...which won't happen. Other than that, it would only be the case if agreements had already been made and not publicized yet.....which doesn't make sense.

What's the point in saying something is unanimous if it wasn't. To show tha the owner's are united and will hold strong? Well, if there are some owners that don't agree, why would they agree to pretent they do?

I'm not overly optimistic, but if you wanted to get some optimism out of it, this could be a way of looking at it: - they are talking......which is better than not talking - potential (I use that word as it could go the other way too) to build momentum and goodwill - if they agree in principal to several smaller issues, it may be easier to negotiate economics and make concessions if they then tweak something they agreed on other issues. Without agreeing on other issues, its tough to consider where there might be give and take.

You do realize that's all public posturing right? The league suggesting they are willing to negotiate and any time whenever the PA is ready is no different than the PA saying they are willing to start the season under the existing CBA while a new one is negotiated. I'm not sure why either side is really all that interested in getting public support on their side though, I don't see it as having any real impact on resolving any differences they may have. I'm not one of those guys that are against the players from the view that they make too much money, etc. If an owner generates $100 million profit off a player, is it fair for that player to get $5 million and the owner get $95 million? Extreme case, but some would look at the player and say "hey, you are making $5 million, how much do you need...suck it up and play".....however, I think that's hardly fair. That said, I think it's a fine line trying to determine what is fair and what's not. I'm not sure what math is being used to demonstrate that. I am more on the player's side right now though as their proposals at least attempt to address the issues faced by the NHL. I'm not sure about the fairness of the NHLPA's numbers, but their approach at least attempts to address the issues. The NHL's proposal, whether the sharing is fair or not is plain dumb as it does not address their issues.....all it would do it make the richer teams richer and the poor teams be a little less poor in the first year or so. My solution would be as follows: Determine an appropriate fair profit margin to be earned by the league as a whole (based on appropriate risk weightings and market data, etc.). If overall league revenues are $3.4 billion, all other expenses before player salaries = X.....after deducting X, you can determine how much should be allocated to a player salaries while maintaining an overall profit margin of 10% for example (not sure what that appropriate number may be, but it should be easily calculated, shouldn't be a number out of the air). In terms of then moving down to the individual teams, that's an ownership issue. You are going to having some owners profess their lack of willingness to share profits with other teams who aren't running their businesses properly, etc, which is fine, but if the league really wants parity, they have to figure out a way for the owners to share the wealth with each other......that should not be a player's concern.

Jimmy D Speaks out on Lockout, fined $250k

In the NFL, you can get fined for wearing a long sleeve short that doesn't match your uniform. Believe me, the NFL is way, way, way more agressive when it comes to handing out fines. I think they are trying to figure out what to do about the reffing thing, not sure if they are fining anybody or not, but if they aren't, that's a complete exception to their general rule.

Greatest Red Wing Alum of all time

Yeah, I see that now, it originally looked like you would get a winner from the Yzerman bracket take on the winner from the Lidstrom bracket...the winner of which would be in the final against the winner between the Lindsay and Howe brackets. I'll be interested to see the results from Lidstrom vs. Howe as I assume that is what it will come to in the semis. My guess is the Lidstrom would win because of population likely to be voting on this.

Datsyuk scores a goal off his head

Interesting, looked to be a clear high stick to me (from one angle anyway). I wasn't aware the KHL had a rule that you can't score off your head (obviously that would be okay in the NHL).

No goal because of his stick on the puck correct? edit: high stick I meant to say

Any NHL'ers from your home town?

Complicated question really. Depends on how you look at it (where the players were born, or where they grew up?) Where I was born, or grew up? For me, all of my childhood was spent in Nova Scotia before moving to Toronto after university. I spent almost all of the 80s in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where I remember growing up thinking about Al MacInnis, Booby Smith and Mike McPhee as being the local guys that made it to the NHL. Thinking about the Halifax area where I spent the majority of my older school years and where most of my family still resides, I tend to think of the following guys: - Sidney Crosby - Colin White (we were actually born in the same hospital, same year) - Jon Sim (another guy, same hospital, same year as me.....although I know Colin's family better) - Brad Marchad (he's from just down the street from my parents) - Donald MacLean (went to high school and graduated in the same class) - Glen Murray - soon to be Nathan MacKinnon

Jimmy D Speaks out on Lockout, fined $250k

Loopholes and raising cap each year wasn't the problem. With player salaries linked to total revenues, the problem is when 10 teams contribute the most to signficantly growing revenues, while the bottom teams' revenues don't grow much, but their payrolls grow significantly. The is the biggest problem I have with the NHL's current solution. Asking for a rollback and a reduction in percentage to players will be a quick fix now, but what happens when the revenues increase again but only because the top teams are pushing the totals higher and not the lower teams? How does the NHL's solution fix that potential problem (or do they think they'll just get a one time fix again when the CBA expires again?)

    New League?

Biggest obstacle? Infrastructure or the money to create/obtain. Brand is a big one too.

Greatest Red Wing Alum of all time

Impossible for 2 reasons: 1) Lidas does not exist 2) Seriously though, typo aside, Yzerman and Lidstrom could only meet in the semis, not the finals. Shanny vs. Fedorov is a good second round matchup

Jimmy D Speaks out on Lockout, fined $250k

I don't know if being mad or angry at him is the correct way to put it. From my perspective, if I was one of those players heading over to Europe to play, I'd probably be a little upset about the comments, but I think the biggest problem is simply the fact that is was incredibly stupid of him to make the comments he made when both sides are trying to negotiate a labour agreement.

    The NHL's 50 Greatest Non-North American Players

Should be the best players not born in North America. I know it states it in the "rules" but... I see Stan Mikita as Canadian. He wasn't born here, but he moved here as an 8 year old child and knew nothing about hockey before coming to Canada. He's also played internationally on Team Canada.

Jimmy D Speaks out on Lockout, fined $250k

Freedom of speech is not absolute. I'm assuming you understand this, but if not, he's not speaking as an individual, he's speaking as the representative of an organization.....he got fined by the organization....he didn't get fined by any lawful body or something like that. Back on topic, I wonder what Datsyuk thinks...seems to me he took a bit of a shot at him indirectly when talking about players that went overseas to play....."we all know who they are"
  16. None of which makes a difference in answering the question...."who's the better player?"
  17. To me, it isn't even close and it's not a knock on Datsyuk, I just think Fedorov was that good. I can understand why this board has closer voting than I would have expected though. I wonder how much of Fedorov's career those who voted for Datsyuk saw. I have been able to see pretty much every game both of these guys have played in the NHL and a lot internationally as well and while Fedorov declined in the later stages of his career, he was unbelievable in his prime.

The best players YOU've ever seen...

I think you are a bit off here. I'm not ready to place Crosby too high on the heap....but if you want to start comparing him and what he has accomplished at the same age to other greats, he holds up very well. In terms of eras, I think the guys you mentioned played in higher scoring eras actually. Sure, they played in the clutch and grab era, but that didn't come until the late 90's and into the 2000's. Scoring in 2012 is back down to sad levels. I think Crosby would have done pretty well in clutch and grab era as one of his strengths is playing in traffic. I actually think risk of concussion then would have been lower, so I'm sure what angle you are coming from there.

Where Do You Rank Our Defense?

I think if you rate the Wings' defensemen, it might not be that glowing, but what about team defense? Have they thrived on having allstar defensemen in the past or has their defense been good because they play a great system and have great team defense? I guess we'll see, hopefully sooner rather than later (i.e. CBA related)

For the love of God, Holland

Well, there are 2-ways of looking at it. If you extend him to 40 years of age this time next year, you would think you'd get a pretty cap friendly hit because of term and age. If you sign him to a higher per year cap hit when only signing him to a 2 year deal, what happens after 2 years if he performs at a very high level and you then need to re-sign him again for another 2 years? You could end up paying more in that scenario. That said, the odds are the other way around and he likely get more on a 4-5 year deal than going shorter term because skills will likely keep diminishing (just going by norms here, not saying it is fact). I highly doubt they'd want to sign him to a contract that keeps him here until 40 anyway, since there is a good chance he'd retire before then and they'd still be stuck with the cap hit.

    The Ultimate Ranking List

All professional sporting teams (NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL) in all cities made it. It's not the top 100, it list them all. I think the list is pretty irrelevent and it really doesn't relate at all to how good any of the teams are. There seems to be a pretty high rating on how expensive tickets are (which is why you see Phoenix high on the list and Toronto low on the list). I've seen these lists before and I just find them very weird. Essentially, they are trying to show where the best bang for you buck can be found. Generally speaking, teams in major cities will be handicapped because their tickets will be more expensive (generally), but you would also need to consider that the disposable income of people in those cities would be higher (generally).....so it's tough to compare.

    2012 Lockout Watch

If the NHLPA is successful in blocking a lockout of the Montreal, Edmonton and Calgary players, that doesn't mean these teams would then be playing games. All it means is that those players would have to be paid and granted normal use of the teams' facilities to practice, etc.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Edmonton's situation is way off the norm. I'm assuming most of the bonuses were paid anyway. When you get into bonuses, it's really only on entry level contracts anyway. You can't not have potential bonsuses count because what if they hit the targets and get paid and then you are over? Point is, it is a pretty tough argument to suggest the floor isn't a problem because teams can simply get there by having bonsues count against the cap, which aren't actually paid. You are correct, contracts can be backloaded such that a team pays way less then the cap hit in the early years and then trades the player (i.e. never having to pay the higher amounts). However, in reality, very, very, very few contracts are backloaded, it's quite the opposite.

LIdstrom sells 2.9 Million dollar home

I'm assuming when they said they paid cash, they mean it wasn't financed with a mortgage. I don't think they meant actual physical cash.

    2012 Lockout Watch

I don't have any specific "evidence" that the floor is a problem to a lot of teams other than it being obvious....a lot of teams simply can't afford to pay to the floor. When you say the floor is based on cap hits, not actual salary, well.....the cap is based on actual salary, so it's the same thing. If you suggest Edmonton can end up paying almost $10 million less in salary than they have in cap hits, that just means they pay $10 million more in salary than in cap hits in the future, it's just a timing thing. In the end, total cap hit = total dollars spent, there is no difference.
