Rating the NHL Franchises and Predictions

Okay, I guess I'll bite. Why are you so hellbent on the Wings signing these two? In my opinion, Burrows represents everything that Detroit does NOT stand for and is not the type of player that the Wings will be after. Perry would be a solid addition, but I can't imagine he doesn't resign with Anaheim or get snatched up by another team first.

    2012 Lockout Watch

With the way the owners are acting, I think you mean there's lunch with the booze.

With cap space to clear, do Flyers become a Wings trade partner?

That's the sad thing. He would absolutely make a trade like that (not that it would be a bad trade). It's almost as if he thinks that he has to blow up his team every time they don't win the Cup. I mean, what's the turnover rate for Flyers' players? 2-3 years at most?

    Does Babcock walk?

I think Babcock understands that Holland has tried to acquire Suter/Weber but with the Wings being a division rival, it likely was not going to happen. At least with Weber, anyway. I'm still of the opinion that Holland will wait until after a new CBA is reached to make any more moves. Babcock is a professional and I don't think he'll walk just because of an unfortunate offseason. He's got to like the addition of Tootoo, I would imagine.
  5. True, I forgot about the proposal from the owners for the new CBA. I guess from a player's perspective I was just thinking that I'd rather be paid what I'm worth (or more) for a shorter term than be stuck with a contract that will be undervalued in the future. The new cap limit and possible rollbacks next Summer could kill that idea anyway, though and I suppose he wanted the security.
  6. As someone pointed out already, Weber should have waited to become an UFA instead of signing this offer sheet. I can only assume he would get more money as a free agent and with the length of this offer sheet he'll be playing for less than he's worth for the majority of his career. For everyone worried that the Wings now never have a shot at Weber: How many players have stayed in Philly over the last 5 years, let alone 14?

    Holland Content with Current Roster

In reality, no one knows what will happen. We can't say for certain that there will or won't be a lockout. Only the owners and players can decide what happens in the next few months. Would a lockout be a terrible thing for the league? Yes. Is it still possible that it could happen? Yes. Either way, those other teams made major trades and they worked out well for one team, not so well for another. That's not to say that making a major trade at the deadline would have helped the Wings. Every team is different and I'm comfortable with the situation that Holland is in at the moment.

Nashville also was exposed against a better Phoenix team and lost their #2 defenseman this offseason, losing their one shot at a Cup for the next decade. L.A. relied upon goaltending through the first couple of rounds in the playoffs and by having Richards there was little chance that Carter was going to any other team. My feeling is that Holland isn't doing anything trade-wise at this point because: A) There may be another lockout. B) Other teams are asking for roster players that the Wings need and a major trade would jeopardize this team's depth. I would be surprised if any moves are made before a new CBA is reached. Patience.

Six teams on Nash's trade "list", none Canadian

You also get to hear Jeff Rimer clip the volume on his mic every time Nash does something positive.

    Ryan Sproul

This kid has a cannon of a shot and looks like he isn't afraid to hit. Good mobility and likes to join the rush. Sounds like he'll fit right in with the Wings' system!

Six teams on Nash's trade "list", none Canadian

That's all assuming that Howson would accept that offer. I think Franzen is the only piece of that trade that CBJ would want from the Wings. One (arguably) bad contract for another. The rest is well... surely one of those 5 other teams can and will do better than Tatar and Mursak. Plus, Holland can't keep giving up these 1st round picks. I've never seen anything from Nash to make me believe that he's more than a one-dimensional, somewhat selfish forward.

Six teams on Nash's trade "list", none Canadian

At this point I would just assume that Nash is never coming to Detroit. The asking price is still too high and the team has other needs to address. He would add offense, but isn't a standout on defense and has too many years left on his contract.

    Holland Content with Current Roster

Ray Shero had the luxury of drafting very high for years and then finally built a team around that core of high draft picks that only managed to win one Cup before some of those key players started to degrade in ability or leave (Staal). Aside from taking advantage of high draft picks, I don't see anything in particular that he has done that makes him a better GM than Holland. If Holland thinks Semin will be a cancer in the locker room then a one-year deal is pointless, no matter how much cap space he has to work with. Let Brunner and the kids show what they can do instead of wasting roster space on an even less motivated Franzen-type.

Not spending all the cap space this season while other teams overspend for average players will give Holland an advantage next season when going after top talent. I trust that he knows what he's doing.

How bad are we if our roster is now finalized?

Holland has never said that he's done for the offseason. I know everyone is antsy so see some more moves but the man has all Summer to figure out what is best for the team. I'd rather he take his time and see how this new CBA is going to pan out before making any major trades or being forced into an FA overpayment (which is inevitable in today's FA market environment). Ken Holland is not going to let this team suffer while keeping all of that cap space.

    The Next Move

I haven't seen anyone mention Kurtis Foster as an option for D. Is he just way too injury prone and slow or what? He only made $1.8 mil last season and is a big body with a RH shot.

Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

My point is that the Wings will have to overpay for someone of Doan's caliber. It's just a fact of how things are in the league now. You think Ericsson's contract won't drive up the price of our D-men when they become FAs? In my opinion, it would help this team to have Doan for a few years, overpayment or not.

Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

Does it really matter? This team HAS to spend money just to hit the cap floor. Giving Doan over $5 mil/year would not hurt Detroit's chances at acquiring what they need on D or what may be needed next year. Plus, they can always shed salary via a trade. Unfortunately, this offseason you have to overpay to have a shot at anyone.

    Phoenix Coyotes "Folding" an Option?

I didn't say it would land us Yandle, but I'm sure there would be a D-man available in there somewhere. Also, would the league necessarily go by the 2012 Entry Draft order or just do a random drawing for all 29 remaining teams? The latter would be more fair as Edmonton would just automatically get the best player again. Either way, I agree with the other posters that the league won't allow the Coyotes to fold. Bettman is all about expansion and he'll try to save face as much as possible with this situation. Still, it would be nice to see the league contract a bit.

    Buck Wild?

My question is, will Suter and Parise have the patience to stick with this team if they go through 2 or 3 unsuccessful seasons? And by unsuccessful I mean anywhere from not making the playoffs to not making the Cup Finals. It's hard for me to imagine both of them staying with Minnesota for more than 5 seasons, let alone for the duration of their contracts.

    Phoenix Coyotes "Folding" an Option?

I would be more in favor of this plan than relocating or expanding. Could help address our D issue for free as well lol

    Changing our Image

Trading for Nash or (more likely) Ryan and acquiring a good, young D-man would go a long way in doing what you suggest. However, don't think that this whole Parise-Suter bromance represents the rest of the FA class this year or next.
  23. Wings_Toledo

Ryan Suter agrees to 13-year, $98-mil deal with Wild

http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=18 Just look at Minny's roster and explain to me how that looked more attractive than Detroit to either player. Other than Suter they have no one on D worth mentioning. Half of the forwards are guys who can hit but don't do much else. It's really telling how much these guys only cared about playing together and getting huge contracts from their "home" team. I, for one, care far more about trying to get Weber either this season or next and watching Smith develop into a top four defenseman. Sure, the Wings will probably struggle a bit this year without the same solid backend that we're used to, but in the end, the team will have a brighter future than the Wild.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

I know everyone is saying Suter to Minnesota, but until I see any kind of official statement it's all just speculation at this point. If Parise and Suter do, in fact, sign with the Wild it will only be a matter of time before one or both of them request a trade. That team is going nowhere, even with those two.
