Red Wings to Officially Retire #5 on March 6th

They shouldn't put Lidstrom on the banner, they should put "Legend". He deserves to be forever honored among the greats, i'll never forget him and it was such a thrill to have such a player spend his entire career on this team and remain a part of it's brilliant history. Thanks for everything Nick and welcome to this new page of history.

ESPN/Sportscenter gives the NHL 2.7% of its time

This is why TSN needs to broaden itself and be made available in american cable and satellite packages. ESPN sucks and I get 4 versions of it that I don't watch unless there's a baseball game being aired that I must watch.

It's time - to predict 2014 Team Canada

I like this lineup better except for one spot which is Letang. He's godawful defensively, and I think that will inevitably damage his starting lineup chances. I think the goaltending order is right on also. I'll toss the hail mary and put Hamonic as a top 6 defender, you heard it here first. Underrated because of where he plays imo but valuable defensively. St. Louis will be on the roster also, there's no reason why he wouldn't make the squad.

It's time - to predict 2014 Team USA

I agree completely with Crym here, no chance Gibson makes the squad even as the 3rd option. I also think Byfuglien and Carle crack that top 8 over Martin and Faulk, but that's just my opinion.

    Each NHL Team's Mount Rushmore

This was an entertaining read, I lived in Atlanta during the early years of the Thrashers so this is the only reason why I would substitute one guy on that list. Ray Ferraro was a big part of the leadership and development during the early years, was part of the pretty dominant line of Ferraro Kovalchuk and Brunette and I think he has earned his spot in the great Atlanta Mount Rushmore monument. I'd likely slot him in for Pavelec. Other than that very awesome list, really well thought out and shows a pretty vast knowledge of NHL history. There's even a few I didn't necessarily recognize like Goldsworthy that I had to look into. Props for your extensive NHL non-Wings brains.

    Stars for Cup Wins

Even though I don't like Soccer, there's not much of an argument to be made about it's worldwide popularity. It is hands down the number one sport on the planet, nothing even comes close to comparison. I don't like the idea of any logo alteration but maybe "ticks" on the jersey sleeve or something would be cool. In the military you get a small stripe on the lower left sleeve for every 3 years of service, so maybe something along those lines for each cup won in franchise history. It doesn't have to be all that noticeable or large but something to permanently represent that team's history integrated on the jersey would be interesting.

Rule 48: not working as planned.

Maybe it's time to revisit the design of the protective helmets in general, not look at how to adjust the rules further.

Um, OK, not really sure this'll have the desired effect

Predators colors are yellow and blue. So the people higher up are stewing on this and they decide the "yellow ice" was the better decision here? You would think logic would point to making it blue, but maybe that's just me.

Yep, that's what I thought (NHL Team "luck")

Sorry, but we did NOT benefit from losing DeKeyser in the playoffs. I think with his defensive presence on the ice more often a couple of those mental lapse goals scored against us during the Hawks series don't happen and we advance to the third round. It's a lot of the kids that made those damaging mistakes, no disrespect to rookies playing like rookies but that's how it went.

    Henrik and Pavel

I think what it comes down to is looking at accomplishments overall. Yzerman was the youngest named captain, brought the team a championship for the first time in too long, remained the captain of this team for 20 seasons. He's in the record books amongst the greatest scoring players in NHL history. The cups, the awards, etc. Lidstrom won the Norris 7 times, won 4 championships, and will go down in history as arguably the greatest defender who ever played in the NHL. His career numbers as a defender are stuff of legend. Similar arguments may be made for the rest of the players hanging from the rafters, Howe and Sawchuk go without saying, and the list goes on. You can present the argument for just about any team and their players right now, should the Sedins numbers be retired? Should Chara's number be retired? Should Iginlas number be retired in Calgary? Just a few of many examples. I think it's more like a perfect game pitched in baseball, it's a rarity set aside for the distinguished and legendary, if you begin to hand out retired numbers to the best players of the current generation then those rafters will fill up fast and you start to run out of numbers to hand out to new players. For that reason, I don't believe anyone on the current roster will receive a retired number. I have a love affair for these two, I truly do have an emotional attachment to both and it will break my heart the day they decide to retire, but in light of the honor of getting your number retired from a franchise, I think they will go out solely as phenomenal players within the Red Wings team but nothing past that. If Pav and Zett get their numbers retired, so should Osgood and the flurry of other names start falling in of who should have been and who hasn't. It must be considered how few have been retired in the long history of the sport and how many players have come and gone during that time, especially for an original 6 team like Detroit.

    Captain vacancies

I would have said Whitney for Edmonton before this last season of getting benched and being the root of trade deadline discussion out of that team. I'd tend to think Smid, Hemsky or Smyth because of their veteran status but I also seem to lean in the direction of team captains being seasoned players. I don't think Yakupov would be a consideration this year.

    The person below me game...

Still concerned about losing Brunner.. i'm more "In like" with him but it's close to a love if that counts. The person below me has an excessive firefly population outside their home this time of year.

    Captain vacancies

Assuming he said in his original post "I'm completely joking about Calgary" i'd assume so. I think Tyutin will get a look in Columbus, other than that I agree with most of the other here. I think Wideman or Cammalleri realistically for Calgary but who knows with that squad.

    What Are You Playing?

I know I got you on my friends list, if you ever want help with some achievements and I own the game i'll let ya know. I've been interested in Defiance, how is it? I played Dragons Dogma for a while but got side tracked with other games as I normally do... I tend to not be much of a completionist for achievements even though my gamerscore is really high, I just play a ton of games. With the Ultimate Game Sale going on, I bought the newest Tomb Raider for twenty bucks and i'm pretty much blown away by it. It's so incredibly good I really didn't expect to like it as much as I do. Today is the last day it's on sale and it's worth every bit of $19.99. I also picked up Crysis 3 recently and is likely the next game on my list after TR completion. Also been playing some Battlefield 3 multiplayer here and there.

    Abdelkader Hypothetical

Abby is a frequent visitor of this site and is sick of Flashy making him the chick in his GDTs so by that motivation alone he can reach that goal of 55 points.

David Clarkson is a Maple Leaf

I lived in New Jersey for 4 years and made some friends, two in which I have now kept in touch with since the late 1990s and they are die hard Devils fans. Spoke with both of them today in a chat as we were hanging out watching the UFA period unfold and both were overjoyed to be rid of Clarkson. Before his one productive season I heard from them very frequently how sorry of a player he was, how they wanted him gone, how he took idiotic penalties in key situations and cost that team games because of it. Both also agreed which is also where I stand that he had an abnormally good season which he played well above his skill level and is highly unlikely to repeat another season like it. For that reason alone, two close friends of mine who have been devils fans for as long as i've been a Wings fan put enough negativity in my head about Clarkson over the years that it's hard to not pay attention to their feelings about him. Clarkson got overpaid, and we'll see as the season progresses that not paying him that much was a great decision for us. He's a $3.5 mil player that got a free agency day contract that I believe Toronto will regret.

Filppula to Tampa 5 yr $5 million

Somewhere Loo is in her pajamas with a tub of ice cream watching chick flicks drowning her sorrows. Wish he was a bit more reasonable with his asking price, hope for years of success in Tampa and don't disappoint Mr. Yzerman now mister.

    is anyone happy right now?

I think the OP was stuck in the mindset that anything outside of a tremendous trade would make this team worse as it's a theory he had brought up in other threads and now it's an effort to gain further justification even though this team improved today. Face the facts that Filppula wanted a contract based off of the one good season he did have even though he proved the following year that he could not remain consistent and was not any kind of force in the playoffs. It was an intelligent decision to let him walk which is a positive. We'll let this upcoming season speak for itself, we made the playoffs by winning the final regular season game this year, so if we miss playoffs this upcoming season then sure, the moves today damaged this team. When we do make the playoffs though, which we will, maybe a choice few that post here can step back a bit and realize maybe, just maybe, Kenny Holland knows what he's doing and made the right decisions today. So to answer the question, yeah i'm pretty content with what went down today. Losing Brunner hurts, losing Flip not so much, but gaining Alf and Weiss is definitely a positive in my opinion. And the offseason isn't over yet either who knows what else is in store.

    Players of Interest

Ribeiro 112 points in his last 122 games, yeah that won't help us in the slightest... who needs scoring it's overrated. Sure would make this team "worse" because what we really needed was to overpay for Clarkson to increase our dumb penalty minutes taken total and underwhelm on the score sheet. Damn you Kenny. Just bring back Filppula for that amount of money so he can have a 35-40 point season, offer no grit, and let someone else take Ribeiro and his 70 points. A lot of people "hated" Tootoo also, got over it pretty quick once you discover a pain in the ass player isn't so bad when they are on your squad. Edit: not directed at anyone in particular was just a general sarcastic comment before the Ribeiro haters come seeking my head.

    Wings in on Alfredsson

Yeah I was gonna say... 11 seasons over 60 points, 10 seasons over 70 points, 4 seasons over 80 points. Alf was unquestionably an elite forward and a ppg player 4 seasons ago and long before. Still capable of providing some value even at age 40. Most notably, shows up in the playoffs.

redwings talking to ducks for bobby ryan?

"The Ducks are asking for Thomas Tatar, 2nd and 3rd round picks and Adam Almquist or Brian Lashoff." ...not sure why I felt the need to point this out. So we have this guy who can't spell Tatars name correctly and Eklund saying the Flyers and Wings are in talks for Ryan. I'm finding it hard to trust the credibility of any of this until someone reputable says something about it. Normally if Ek is reporting it the likeliness of it actually happening is slim to none.
