This was last year's Detroit team with Brad Richards instead of Tomas Jurco, Mike Green instead of Marek Zidlicky, Dylan Larkin instead of Drew Miller, and Andreas Athanasiou instead of Landon Ferraro. And they're playing a Tampa team that doesn't have Stamkos, Stralman, or J.T. Brown - all of whom played last season. Oh, but Detroit also has a new coaching staff.... which more than cancels out both rosters moving in directions (for this series) that favor Detroit heavily.

Hopefully, this is a learning experience that Blashill can build upon and improve. Part of that learning experience should obviously be to fire Pat Fershweiler immediately.... since he contributes to Red Wing losses about as much as the opposition.

I blame Pat Ferschweiler for the loss. And Ken Holland, indirectly, for not firing Pat Ferschweiler long ago when he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he sucks terribly large buffalo testicles at his job.

It is difficult to believe that we came out of that otherwise horrible period tied.

Like Smith in. Don't really like Quincey out (unless he's hurt). Like Mrazek in (it's just the right decision. Howard should be starting game 3 as well if the roles were reversed). Don't like Andersson still in the lineup. I could understand being conservative at the start of the series, but not now. I can understand playing Andersson over Pulkkinen for size, but at least put Jurco in for him. But in any case... LET'S GO RED WINGS!!! Come out hungry from puck drop on and show everyone that it isn't just about making the playoffs and extending the streak. Show us you want more that that!!

Meh. He'll be fine. He's a big boy and he's a hockey player. He can handle a few stitches. It may not have been necessary, but it was something that maybe can help get his team going with the series moving to Detroit.

Don't get me wrong, Howard wasn't great tonight... and he is certainly in the discussion when handing out blame. I did say I thought Mrazek should be in for Game 3. I don't hold Howard responsible for the Game 1 loss, though. He wasn't Conn Smythe worthy or anything, but I felt the defensive mental lapses in front of him were the main reason for the loss.... that and the usual lack of much scoring. I was just saying that I don't blame him solely for either loss. I mean, one of the four Wings just standing there could have done SOMETHING to keep Tyler Johnson from tapping that puck in, etc. The blame is shared.

Easier in the Pacific, maybe... but in the Central? I don't think I would call that easier.

I really felt like they should've had game 1. Never felt like they were really in game 2. Maybe the hotter heads prevailing at the end will light a fire. While I don't hang the losses solely on Howard like others, I do agree that Mrazek should start game 3. Smith should be in as well. Andersson should sit for Jurco.

Well, at least Smith would be willing to throw some punches if that's the only kind of fight we're going to show in this series. Changes are needed - put him in.

It's pretty tough when the officials are handing out momentum builders to the opposition like candy. Should have been coincidental minors on Abdelkader and Johnson (interference or diving - take your pick). Any way sliced, the officiating decisions are the difference in the game at this point imo.

Well, he had 4 points last year in 7 games.... while Smith had no points in 5 games.

Smith has 5 career playoff points in 24 games. Ericsson has 20 career playoff points in 72 games. Not even a better point scoring rate for Smith vs. Ericsson. You're likely correct about faster... better is certainly up for debate, at least... stronger, though? I'm doubtful.

Tonight's loss isn't on Howard and hardly warrants a change in goal, imo. I remember people on LGW used to call Lebda "Lebderp." Well, with that precedent, tonight we saw Derpen Helm. What a complete butt clown that guy was. Maybe, if he tries to get more than $2.75 million per next season, they can just play tonight's game tape to talk some sense into him.

Just finished - had to watch on DVR. The good news is that, if game 2 is just like game 1, Detroit can win if they can just learn one lesson from game 1. The bad news is that lesson is "don't be complete morons and blow your assignments in the defensive zone." Which begs the obvious question of... why said lesson wasn't learned long ago by all involved.
