Gordie Howe was known for being a tough guy. He was also well known as a goal scorer. He was also well known as a play maker. The name seems appropriate, no? Also, I've heard that Howe only having one GHHT is a myth, and the correct answer is closer to 3 or so. But who knows for sure?

The coach wasn't to blame for this one. The boys just looked uninspired and uninterested and slow tonight. The players did a fine enough job to receive the blame themselves.

I know this is going to come off as incredibly homerish, but I think Datsyuk is one of the most underrated players in NHL history.
-
Look for Kopecky to get two goals against us. The puck seems to bounce off him wonderfully when they verse us.

Thats not the definition of charging. That's the definition of reading the play. Bradley didn't skate into his opponent, he strided. He also didn't leave his feet. I don't know how that could be considered charging.

Don't underestimate the power of THE ESTABLISHMENT

Ha that's pretty cool. I still think Aflac's GDTs were the best the internet has seen.

Well his philosophy is "110% is for suckers"

Datsyuk, Franzen, Hudler & Bertuzzi likely will not play

Now that the league (Western Conference especially) has established good parody, there really isn't as much of an advantage to being a top seed and versing a 7th or 8th seed team. Chances are, if you make the playoffs, the 8th seed is going to give you just as much hell as the 3rd seed. Ken Holland himself has said as much. The only real advantage is home ice, but it is worth sacrificing health to maintain home ice advantage throughout the playoffs (especially with our home ice record), or is it more beneficial to drop a couple games late in the stretch when most teams are playing physical gritty playoff style games to climb in the standings and go into the real dance feeling less banged up? I'd rather be a third or fourth seed and relatively healthy, than a second seed and worn down. On that note, don't be surprised if Zetterberg misses a couple games before Round 1. -
I said this in another thread, but Stanley Cups are won on what Helm has. Everyone in the postseason has skill, that's not the difference maker (unless you're the 2002 Wings). For every Datsyuk there's a Malkin, for every Zetterberg there's a Getzlaf. Heart is the difference between first and second place, not skill, and Helm has as much heart as anyone in the league. If Holland were to throw a long-term contract to this kid, I would love it, even though he's a third liner.

I love this guy. He is my second favorite player behind Datsyuk, and he may surpass Dats depending on their postseason play.

Thumbs up for the it crowd

The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, because I'm a nerd.

Just got back from the game and the Joe seemed a bit more electric tonight than its usual casual self. Ovie's goal was sick, but Z has a gorgeous response. I will say that Datsyuk really seems to be trying for the low percentage finesse pass alot, and its leading to uncharacteristic turnovers. Possibly for the first time in his career, I wish he would simplify his game a little more. edit: spelling fart

Heck, I don't even consider the Wings of the past 20 years a dynasty.
-
Is anyone not expecting 100 points? 10 points over 13 games isn't even .500.
-
There hasn't been a killer instinct with this team for a while, now.

I think Helm is capable of reaching 20 goals/season simply because of his work ethic and hustle. He's the type of guy who can will the puck into the net. I don't know if he has quite the raw talent that Kesler, or even Filpulla has, but given his skill set, I wouldn't have even expected him to be as productive as he has been. His hard work has really opened doors for him, and its not out of the question that he becomes a 40+ point-getter. Edit: And just an aside, but Helm's character is what wins Stanley Cups, and I'm hoping to death that its contagious this year.

I'm glad to see they're addressing the issue. Its a shame it took up until Crosby's concussion for the league to make a move, though.
-
I said this in another thread previously, but I don't think cheap and dangerous hits will be eliminated from the game simply by larger suspensions, fines, and more rule tweaking. Players just need to respect each other more.

I mentioned this earlier but I guess I should repeat it. You're correct to a degree with the point that you are trying to make, specifically in that none of us as forum-goers can say with 100% certainty that McCrimmon is the source of the defensive problems the Wings have been plagued with for the past couple years. However, during his tenure as defensive coach, he has done absolutely nothing to fix these problems. As a fan of a prestigious team with a history of winning, I admit I've become a bit spoiled and expect the best product that the Wings can give, but I think I'm correct in my entitlement because of the Wings' recent history of consistently being the best, and working as a well oiled machine. I know they're capable of delivering. Consequently, I expect the Red Wings to employ a defensive coach who can make a difference on the ice, and come up with innovative and effective solutions to the problems that keep coming back to haunt us. As far as the on-ice product, McCrimmon has done about as much as I'm capable of doing (and I'll work for half the salary), and that is unacceptable.
