  1. We won't know for sure until tomorrow noon. All the teams have 24 hours to submit their interest in Nabokov, then tomorrow at noon the league looks at what team is the lowest in the standings. For all we know 15 teams could have submitted their "claim" already.
  2. You are correct. Vancouver and Philly both have the option of claiming Nabokov off waivers and have higher priority than us, because we are the ones who put him on waivers.
  3. Each team has until noon tomorrow to submit their interest. The NHL pools all the interested teams together then calls up the one that's lowest in the standings. We won't hear an inkling of news until afternoon tomorrow.

My comment wasn't an insult at you, if you took it that way. I honestly don't know the answer to your question, and it seems like we're all going in circles by citing people who don't know what they're talking about a lot in the past 24 hours. The CBA is confusing.
  5. I didn't get your reference, but I know my reference was Tobias from Arrested Development
  6. That won't work either, because the misconception that Detroit gets first pick if he reenters waivers is false. What's happening between now and tomorrow at noon is all interested teams are submitting their name into the hat for Nabby's contract. The NHL then looks over who's interested and pick the team lowest in the standings. If that team decides to reintroduce Nabokov to waivers, then the next team on the list gets first dibs and they work their way up through all the teams that expressed interest. The Detroit Red Wings are last on that list.

They really need to make a NHL CBA for dummies handbook.

  10. Just a sidenote, but Vancouver and the Flyers both get to claim him also. Because the Wings are the ones that put him on waivers, we're last in the pecking order. Granted its unlikely Vancouver or the Flyers will end up with Nabokov..
  11. More talks about a possible deal with NJ http://twitter.com/wharnscbcsports I guess my issue with making a deal to put Nabby back on waivers is that the NHL might suspect circumvention, which may lead to a fine, loss of draft picks, etc. edit: actually I came across this bit of info at hfboards, which DEBUNKS THE RUMOR THAT WINGS GET FIRST DIBS SHOULD NABBY BE PLACED ON WAIVERS AGAIN: "That is the default rule for Waivers (Article 13.20(b)). If a player is claimed on Waivers and the claiming team wants to trade him during the remainder of that season - he has to be offered at waiver price to any team which put in an unsuccessful lower priority waiver claim. In this case, that is superseded by 13.23 which explicitly states that in the case of a player who was waived due to playing overseas (Svatos, Wellwood, Nabby, etc) and was claimed, then he has to clear a new round of Waivers (where any team can make a claim) before he can be traded." In short, if Holland is pulling some strings behind the scenes, the end result won't be Nabby in Detroit, unless its next year. There may be something going on where some team picks up Nabokov, then trades the Wings their backup to make room.
  12. Well were talking about Evgeni Nabokov. What are the odds that a team would even want to put him in the AHL? The main deterrent from what I've gathered is the fact that he pretty much has to take up a roster space if he is claimed, which means that whatever team that picks him up will have 3 goaltenders dressed each night unless/until the old number 1 or 2 are traded away.

see that 3 assists he contributed to 3 goals for. his line is the reason we got the first of two points tonight
  14. So if NJ picks up Nabakov off waivers then puts them back on waivers (maybe with a couple incentives from Holland), the Wings get first dibs, essentially bypassing the other 28 teams?
  15. Kind of risky though. Ken and Mickey were saying that Nabby cannot be sent down to the minors, and we already established that he can't be traded unless he hits the waiver wire again. Is it worth the risk to waste one of two, maybe three available slots on a goalie who refuses to play for you? Granted, I doubt Nabby cares as much as we do where he ends up. I expect he's looking at the remainder of this year as an audition for next year. So if a team was at their roster or salary cap limit and wanted to acquire Nabokov, would they first have to move a player, then pick up Nabby, or could they pick up Nabby first and go over the roster/cap limit for a couple hours to a day while they sort things out? On that note: are there any teams who are so close to the Cap or are at their roster limit that picking up Nabby isn't feasible right now?
  16. Hello Nabby. Goodbye Nabby.

Which NHL player have you met

The guy was seriously acting like we were the celebrities. He was so quiet and reserved and kind of stuck by our coach the entire time. We all got an opportunity to get something signed by him and shake his hand and all that jazz. Just the way he behaved you would never guess he was a perennial Hall of Famer, let alone an ice hockey player.

How many other teams have the roster space to add another goalie? On the likely event that Nabovok is grabbed off waivers, that team would likely have get rid of another goalie beforehand or they'd be over the roster limit, correct? I think Holland is planning on using Nabakov to force some other GM's hand into a trade. The thing is, there's no guarantee that the Wings will be the one's participating in said trade, but worth a shot, right?

Which NHL player have you met

My old hockey coach was a financial adviser for a lot of the Wings. One day our team is getting dressed in the lockerroom for practice and Shawn Burr walks in with his hockey gear. I was especially fortunate to play on a line with a winger who rarely showed up to practice, so coach put Burr on my line to do drills and plays and stuff. One of the coolest experiences I have ever had was having Shawn Burr feed me the puck in a practice 3-on-2 for a goal. Also, that guy was ripping wrist shots from the blue line harder than any of my teammates' slap shots (this is midget hockey, btw). My coach also invited Steve Yzerman to our end-of-the-year hockey party. We're all in our coach's basement shooting pool and coach walks down with Stevey Y behind him and is like "Boys, I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine." Stevey's all quiet and shy and just goes "Hi, guys."

I imagine that's the angle Holland is hoping for. Make an unbelievably appealing contract for an elite goalie, which forces some other goalie out to the trading block.

Would he have to clear waivers again? I'm kind of foggy on the rules after a waiver acquisition. I was under the impression that if a team signs someone off waivers, they are 100% a part of the active roster of the new team (maybe this is wrong?). edit: thanks for the clarification 10min

Here's the pecking order for waivers: http://www.leftwinglock.com/nabokovs-waiver-process/ New Jersey Edmonton NY Islanders Ottawa Toronto Calgary Buffalo Florida Columbus Los Angeles San Jose Carolina Atlanta St. Louis Minnesota Anaheim Chicago Phoenix Colorado NY Rangers Montreal Nashville Washington Tampa Bay Boston Pittsburgh Dallas Philadelphia Vancouver The Devils have no cap space but Edmonton has 12M available and I imagine they would bite to get Nabby. At the same time, we have plenty of what they need: veteran and/or winning experience. I wonder if Holland is negotiating with Edmonton to trade away a couple of our players, maybe a draft pick to reacquire Nabakov?
