Ericsson is just fine for where he is at. First of all, he is a rookie defensman who, under any other circumstances would be a 6th dman and get 7 minutes a night. Instead the Wings are missing Kronwall and Lilja and periodically Rafalski, which bumps him up to a top 4 pairing and getting 15+ per night, and for the most part he has done well in this scenario. Secondly, this kid does not play like a rookie. He isn't afraid to pinch, he doesn't get knocked off his game by a poor play or big hit, and he's not a passive player on the ice; his mindset is already veteran-like. This makes it all the more apparent when he does make a rookie mistake, such as a turnover or something. It's very hard to forget this is his first year in the NHL judging by the way he carries himself. Sometimes I have to remind myself this kid is a rookie after he makes a stupid mistake. Then after putting everything in perspective I'm impressed by the kid (despite the mistakes) and look forward to the Dman he is capable of becoming once he actually has some experience under his belt. We also need to keep in mind that Ericsson isn't a natural defensman, and he's still learning some of the finer points of the defensive aspect of the game that most people at this level know naturally.

I just read an article about Filatov and why he left Columbus. In the interview he mentioned that he plans on coming back to the nhl next year, but there's obviously some issues between him and Hitchcock. I would absolutely love for the Wings to trade for this kid's rights, but I understand that possibility is next to zero.

Our top players are supposed to be our top players regardless of who is covering them. That's why we're investing so much into them. They've never had trouble producing in the past, despite being up against Iginla, Thornton, Crosby, etc, but now they're being shut down by the opposition relatively effectively. Unfortunately this is also coming at a time when we need them to produce more than ever I'm hoping they can turn it around because they always seem to, but I am definitely not content with their play and rightfully so. I don't have as much of an issue with Lids as I do some of our forwards, but I have been noticing his positioning this year has been off. There have been a number of breakaways or turnovers where I was surprised to see Lids in the middle of the cause. Granted he is still an elite defensman (hence my giving him a bit of a break) but he is definitely on a downward slope right now. And again, you seem to be missing the entirety of what I am saying and focusing rather blindly at the "the wings are hopeless and its all their fault they aren't going to have an 82-0 season." I understand they are suffering from injuries, and I understand they've played more games than anyone else the past three years, and I understand [insert excuse here], but the fact is the team that's healthy right now is capable of playing better than they have been and they aren't doing so on a regular basis. That's why our past 10 games have looked so terrible, and thats why Zetterberg has called himself out to play better, and thats why Babcock has repeatedly said this year he is disappointed in how the team is looking. The team on the ice last night and the past couple weeks is NOT giving 100% of what they're capable of.

Taking a look at the past couple years and the fact that we need to start looking at the post-Lidstrom era I expect the Wings to look for investing in a defensman.

Oh please, enlightened one, share with me your wisdom of how Datsyuk who has 5 points and a -2 in the past 10 games and countless turnovers is not underperforming, or how Zetterberg has cooled off completely since the Dallas blowout, only getting 5 points and a -6 since then should be no cause for concern, or how Lidstrom who hasn't scored in God knows when is something we should just ignore. That's almost half the that $41M payroll you mentioned earlier. I understand we have injuries and I understand that we lost players in the offseason. I also understand as a result that the Wings aren't going to win as many games as most people are used to as a result. That's fine, but that doesn't excuse the players who are healthy and supposed to pick up slack were its due to play half-assed throughout the season. Many of the games that we lost weren't because they were beyond the capabilities of our personnel. They were lost because our team didn't show up to play, and that's what I'm pissed about. Yeah we had a bit of bad luck a couple weeks ago and legitimately outplayed a couple teams and lost, but that doesn't account for all 14 losses the Wings have experienced so far this year. Hey, if you're perfectly content with where they are right now and how they're playing, and perhaps blaming the losses on injuries or what have you, that's fine, but I'm seeing a ton of ability on the ice that isn't being used to its potential, and losses are accumulating as a result.

In the past ten games a team that boasts a healthy Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Rafalski (until yesterday) had only won 4 games, and in 6 of those games we scored 1 or less goals. Is that about how you expect the team to perform? Even though they have injuries right now, they're still being beaten to the puck, outskated, outshot, outhustled, and man handled in more than half the games that they're playing right now. We're also not the only team suffering through injuries right now. Edmonton has more guys out than we do, and we looked like children against men last night, and its not the first time they've looked that way.

They don't need an intent to blow, they're doing just fine blowing as it is. If you catch my drift.

Given all the injuries that they've suffered, I'm happy that we aren't as low as we could be in the standings, but I still think we're underperforming.

I'm not sold on Kindl. From what I gather the kid is all offense, and has incredible defensive flaws.

I was actually thinking the other day that expansion in the NHL might allow for greater competition against the KHL, because there would be more teams to retain talent here, instead of 2nd liners going across the ocean to become stars. Granted, it would water the league down even more.
