As this sport is a bit less popular than basketball, it will take a bit longer to get the amount of cash flow that they have to reach that point, and I suspect that time will be forced upon the nhl with inflation, not necessarily a huge influx of money. I imagine nba stars will be close to 35-40M at that point.

The cap is heavily influenced on how the overall economy is at the time. Because rates steadily inflate as the value of the dollar steadily declines, the cap could easily be expected to rise as long as the salary cap is enforced in the nhl. Of course there will be periods of fluctuation as the economy fluctuates, but overall I see an upward trend. You have to keep in mind, though, that gaining 8M in capspace over a period of 5 years isn't as appealing as it sounds. Financial demand of players, equipment companies, management staff etc will all rise accordingly, and the cap is more acting in response to nationwide inflation. It may be commonplace to see 2nd and 3rd liners make as much as Datsyuk makes now in a decade's time, while the Ovechkins of the league make close to 20M. Many people hope that this becomes the case, as Zetterberg's and Franzen's contracts are still on a 2009 economic basis. If they're taking a caphit from the Wings at 7M and 4.5M respectively 10 years from now, right now that seems like a disaster, but if inflation continues the way it has been, those numbers might not be uncommon to see in someone of their production at that time.

I don't know if he can supply what the Wings really need right now. Injuries have slowed down his production, and even at his best he never put up Hudler's numbers. Ideally, Detroit also needs a good 3rd or 4th line PKer who can occasionally chip in offensively. I don't know if Eaves is strong in that department.

This is going to be a big year for Kindl in Grand Rapids. With Adbelkader, Helm, Leino, Ericsson, and Howard most likely staying in Detroit all year, it really puts a lot of pressure on Kindl to step into a leadership position on the ice. Additionally, Kindl is going to be working towards keeping the upward trend going as far as his statistics go (I think a lot of people are expecting a career year out of him in GR over the next 365 days). Consistency will be a big factor in how well he succeeds. Anyway, its exciting that the Wings organization went with a three-year deal.

I wonder if the NHL will be more inclined to award Hudler a greater deal of money after his signing in the KHL for 10M to possibly prevent him from being poached. At the same time, I can see the NHL wanting to send a message to all players who might try to use the KHL as leverage and award Hudler very little.
