    Who do we target now?

If I start posting random garble from wikipedia on here in hopes of derailing this thread and forcing its closure, will people join the cause? Because I've done so in the past, and you guys don't seem to understand what I'm getting at.

    Alex Tanguay

Even though Homer had a relatively poor postseason, the Wings still need a big body with no neurons around his spine to screen the goaltender. Dropping Homer for Tanguay could easily become a mistake.

    88 goals, 118 assists, and 206 points

Jeez this argument keeps popping up. Leino --> peg him for 10 goals (yes, just 10) Helm --> peg him for 10 goals Abdelkader --> peg him for 7 goals Ericsson --> peg him for 7 goals 4th Line Grinder --> peg him for 6 goals Do any of these marks seem out of reach at all? Because right there you just made up 40 of the 80 goals the Wings just lost, and like I've said numerously this past week, you can't include Hossa into the equation (who contributed the other 40 goals the Wings will lose), because we weren't supposed to be able to afford him anyway. Again, compare this year's team to the Cup winning team a couple years ago. Also, this is assuming Filppulla doesn't grow in his new role, and that Zetterberg has another off year, which hopefully won't be the case. So if you do feel that the above players can't hit those marks, perhaps you feel a bit more comfortable that Filppulla and Zetterberg and Datsyuk and Franzen and Cleary know that they are also being counted on to pick up the slack.

    Alex Tanguay...

Holland could potentially sign Tanguay to a frontloaded multiyear contract, assuming he is willing to make 1M/year when he's 34-35ish, but is it really worth it?

    Holland's Strategy Now

I wouldn't call this a crisis, and I disagree that he wouldn't predict this outcome to be a possibility. Heck, I even suggested it as a possibility a couple months ago. Hossa was an anomaly on our team. He shouldn't have been here in a cap world, so you can't look at losing him as a loss (besides we won the Cup without him a year earlier). Instead compare our team to the 2007-2008 Wings. Leino for Sammy possibly Abdelkader for Kopecky Helm for Drake We have about 1.7M in free space right now, and that will go to about 2.5 after Holland trades a defensman off, and that's all the money the Wings really need to replace a Hudler (if he wants to be tricky about it, he might get a player better than Hudler with that capspace; the possibilities are certainly there). Meech can play as forward and defense, and players like Kindl, Ritola, and the like become our depth should an emergency occur. Remember, all of these players we are bringing up were at one point in the past couple years acknowledged as nhl caliber players, and would be in an nhl lineup if they didn't play for Detroit. Also: remember the Pens? They were absolutely decimated last year and everyone was questioning whether the would even make the playoffs. They won the Cup. Now its our turn, and again, this isn't a crisis. More reassurance? Our top 6 is as good as any in the league. They're our goal scorers. Our bottom six are grinders, and if the postseason is any indication of what they're capable of, my only worry next year lies in Draper and Maltby, not Helm, Abdelkader, and Leino. Our defense is as good as any in the league. Especially now that the Big Rig is a full timer.

    Fil's Play

Its not that I have a hard on for stats (see: my support for Kopecky this season), but when they support your argument, its better to use them than to use "what I saw". In Filppulla's case, both his on ice play and the resulting positive statistics demonstrate that he was more effective than Hudler; however the numbers are a lot less debatable and don't provide as much wiggle room as arguing how hard he plays. You may notice in my quote that I added the disclaimer "in case your friend missed the entire playoffs, the statistics back up your arguments just as well"

Who do we try for next?

Holland already said he plans on trading a defensman.
  23. Echolalia

Who do we try for next?

Without Hudler I think we have about $1.77M in capspace. Add at least .650M to that to account for a traded defenseman and we have approximately 2.42 to use for a 12th forward for a lineup of: Dats Zetterberg Homer Franzen Filppulla Cleary Leino Helm Draper Maltby Abdelkader 2.42M investment Lids Rafalski Kronwall Stuart Ericsson Lilja/Lebda Meech Tom Kostopoulos? Travis Moen? Rob Niedermayer? Mike Grier? Mike Comrie? There are a ton of options for a bottom 6 forward, especially if Holland gets creative. 2.42M is enough to sign someone with decent skill, especially for a three year depreciating value contract.

Holland confirms that Hudler will play in KHL

That's right where we would expect to be, though, as Hossa scored exactly 40 goals last year, and he is the only player that we haven't replaced (because in a salary cap world we aren't supposed to have Hossa to begin with) We're still good, even if Hudler takes off.

    Fil's Play

Hudler had 4 goals in the postseason, with none of them occurring in the last two series. He had 8 assists for a 12 point total, and was +4. Filppulla only had one less goal in the postseason, with two of his three coming against Pittsburgh when the Wings needed it the most. Filppulla also had 13 assists, which alone beats out Hudler's point total, and was a +8. It was relatively easy to see that Filppulla's play was far more dominant than Hudler's this postseason just by watching the games, but in case your friends missed the entire playoffs, the statistics back up your arguments just as well.
