    Ranking potential 1st round opponents

I do not want to verse Anaheim in the first. The physicality and long travel do not make for ideal deep playoff runs. That and I don't want Cory Perry injuring our players with cheap shots.

    Ericsson's fight

I'm glad that he's been broken into an nhl fight at least. Maybe we'll see some more formal fights from him now. The kid is a beast.

I dunno I was at Kaplan tonight. I just saw that he got a fighting major for tangoing with Drew Stafford

What does everyone think of Ballard's hit on Malkin?

I didn't see much fighting on Crosby's part

4/6 GDT: Red Wings 4 at Sabres 1

I see Ericsson had a fight tonight. Can someone post that please or link to some highlights? I also see Osgood only let in one goal, and I did see that one, and no blame goes to him for that. Did he play playoff hockey tonight, or was it mostly fluff that he was stopping?

Who Should be on the 3rd Defensive Pairing in the Playoffs?

It depends on who the Wings play. Lebda has speed, Chelios has veteranship, Lilja has shotblocking and grit, and Ericcson has just about everything a defensman can have besides experience. Any combination of the above will have its advantages and disadvantages, but I do hope to see a lot of Ericcson.

    Did anyone cap todays game?

What does cap mean? I didn't see it either, by the way. I see Osgood was in net and only two goals went in. Was he alright?

    Pavs

Two more points for Datsyuk today, so I believe that makes it 5 points left per 4 games left.
  13. Echolalia

    how about khabibulin?

I don't think it would be much of an improvement, especially for an extra 2M against an already tight cap

Should Datsyuk be named the next Captain?

Iginla got his ass whooped, thats what happened. What you don't see is Datsyuk prowling just off camera.

Should Datsyuk be named the next Captain?

Pav's speaking doesn't deter him like it used to four or five years ago. He isn't hesitant to be outgoing in interviews (and there are many more of them nowadays), and his hustle on the ice is unmatched right now. He has addressed every one of his weaknesses and has become a "complete player". He is the only player on the Wings team this year that I haven't pointed to at some point and said "he isn't awake out there." On the contrary, his hustle usually catches my eye, regardless of when he is on the scoresheet or not. Yzerman is often said to have lead by example. If you want a captain to lead by example, Pavel is the guy to look at. Of course there is more to captaincy than playing well on the ice and setting a positive influence, but the other aspects involve character behind closed doors in the lockeroom, and none of us know conclusively whether Dats has that, or Zetterberg for that matter. Heck, Fillppula might be a big lockerroom presence and we wouldn't have a clue. Based on what I know and what I've seen, Pavel is the man, despite the fact that he isn't captain-handsome like Yzerman Lids or Z.

    Mule close to signing

This is the first time that I've actually looked at the Wings' situation as a win-win-win (haha). 1)Wings win if they sign Franzen but not Hossa, because they now have a proven goal scorer, probably the most clutch player in the league, and is more than half way to a solid old time power forward, an endangered species in the nhl. The Wings also get 2-3M extra to sign 2nd-3rd line players and keep a larger portion of the core together. That plus Leino and Ericcson. 2)Wings win if they sign Hossa but not Franzen, who is of the same calibre of Zetterberg and Datsyuk, something that was considered impossible to have on the same team in a salary cap era. The guy has a great shot, too. That plus Leino and Ericcson. 3)Wings win if they sign both Hossa and Franzen, for all the obvious reasons that LGW has boasted about for the past year, even at the expense of Hudler and/or Sammy and/or Fillppula and/or Kopecky and/or Lebda and/or Lilja. That plus Leno and Ericcson.

    Mule close to signing

With the whole salary cap conflict the Wings are facing, I admit I was worried about the future of our team being consistently one of the best for years to come. Regardless of whether we sign Franzen or Hossa (or both, somehow), kids like Leino and Ericcson, who easily have the potential to replace some of our higher tier players, in combination with Holland, who knows how to manipulate salaries like noone's business really settled any doubts. I say welcome back Franzen, you're sure to be a big component of another Stanley Cup within the next five years.

    Pick 2 Players.

Pavel Datsyuk and Alex Ovechkin, because then it wouldn't matter who the coach was.

Get Rid of the Extra Point for OT/SO Losses

Despite the fact that many old time hockey fans hate the shootout (and I'm not calling anyone old), its become a big, irreversible part of hockey. Everyone is on their feet during a shootout: fans, players, everyone. It's a very exciting time, and yes it is a huge marketing gimmick, but its doing its job effectively, at least. I prefer 1 point for a shootout to 2, because, like pre-lockout hockey, if a team can't close it up after 65 minutes, they don't deserve two points for a clean win. I also understand why someone would then say "well give 'em both 1 point and go ahead with the shootout, just for kicks". If this is implemented, then the shootout becomes redundant, and there's a good chance players will stop caring, or not even want to participate in it, having gave it 100% already in a 65 minute game (or 110% if you're a coach's boy). The quality would almost certainly turn into a circus act, then the nhl loses an effective way to sell the game. The other alternative is to revert back to the tie format, but the nhl will never remove the shootout from the game after the amount of success it has seen. Edit: Dano brought up a good point too in that this system is a motivational force to not play the trap-and-dump game for five minutes in OT to guarantee a point. Instead, this type of strategy (which becomes more appealing if you are tired) will be punished because a team would essentially be choosing to risk it all in a shootout. I'm sure some teams will still do this, because their only chance for victory might be a shootout, but it makes overtime a bit more worth the effort.

Get Rid of the Extra Point for OT/SO Losses

I see where you're coming from, but I don't really like a 1 point win system, for overtime at least. I always wanted to see 2 points for a win, regulation or OT 1 point for a shootout (because its essentially a tie) 0 points if you lose, no matter when you lose, regulation, OT, or shootout. Losers don't get rewarded. We have that in common, at least.

Doug Weight Wishes he was a Red Wing

I would love this so much. It would be difficult with the capspace problems we already have (is he even a free agent?), but the guy is exactly the mold that many folks think the Wings are missing.
