There are so many things that I hate about the Joe right now: first of all the seats are uncomfortable and cramped, so when I sit down, my knees are usually wrapped around the guy's face in front of me. That's even more awkward when its a woman. There's no place to put my food or drink should I want to watch the game live and eat at the same time. There's no place for me to put my food or drink should I want to watch the game on a 30" tv in the corner of a concession stand (unless you're fond of garbage can lids). The bathrooms are too few and far in between and I don't like the looks I get for my inferiority when I'm pissing in ye olde public pig trough. I also don't like the looks I get when when the poor guy next to me is having trouble getting that last drop out. There aren't enough suites for the corporate ticket-grabbers who prevent real fans from buying lower bowl. And these are just basics. I think it would be nice to see some in-arena restaurants or bars or something where the everyday working-class guy can go and feel like he's in a suite, with a big screen right there so you can keep tabs on the game, of course. Illitch will probably end up delaying what happens for another couple years though. The rough economy really complicates things.

Well I'm more of a playmaker than a goalscorer; I have a tendency to look for the pass first, and shoot as a last resort (although I've been trying to break that habit). I'm tall, but lanky, so my size is useless. I'm very defense-oriented (played 1st line pk in every team I played for in my organized league days), and as such, I always end up filling in for a pinching defensman. I'm fast, but not Draper-in-his-prime fast, but probably in the top 20% of my peers. I'm decent at stick handling, but no Datsyuk by any means. Overall I think my two greatest strengths were defensive play and finding the open man, or setting up someone for a good shot on goal. I don't really know who I would be. By the way this is a great idea.

Whats to stop Chris Chelios from falling so much that the refs are forced to call a penalty, and when he comes out of the box he gets a lead pass from Zetterberg for a breakaway, but skates slow intentionally so the defensman can catch up, at which point he falls again to draw the penalty shot, then just rips it from the half line and scores top shelf because he can?

I'm really excited to hear that he wants a longterm contract, and was implying that he wants to be a Wing for life. What has me worried is what the economy holds for the future of the nhl. I really don't want to invest 6M+ each into Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Hossa just to have the cap fall by four million three years from now and cripple the Wings. Anyway, I trust Holland, I'm sure he'll have some sort of trump card built into any signings that take place between now and then to protect the organization from a collapsed economy.

I remember there was one game where the Wings were versing Anaheim, and it was very early in the season. It might have been the preseason, actually, I can't remember. But it was either the goalie was pulled for a 6th man on the PP, or the Mighty Ducks were down by a goal late in the third and pulled for an extra attacker, but I remember that Karyia had the puck deep in our zone in the corner, and they had already established our zone, and he passed it blindly back to the point, but the defender pinched into the slot for a one-timer, and sure enough the puck drifted into an empty net. Maybe that's what you are remembering?

He definitely has amazing offensive talent; that is something I can give him in a heartbeat. In his own end, however, I haven't heard a single story that can demonstrate his defensive capabilities. I have heard numerously that he can be a liability. I personally haven't been able to watch him so I can't formulate an opinion of his defensive play based on direct observation, so these anecdotes are all I have. I expect him to be a Norris candidate regardless, but there are plenty of good defensive players out there who, based on from what I've heard, are better suited for the title.

You can see the anticipation in their stride. Datsyuk especially. He has been all over the ice the past couple games, both offensively and defensively. Its like he hasn't ever won the cup yet or something. Has anyone else noticed this?

I think the important thing to take away from the past week or so is that the entire team is suddenly getting more focused. Osgood has steadily been improving, the defense has been tighter, and the offense is exactly what we expected it to be the day Holland signed Hossa. Since the Columbus fiasco the Wings have averaged 4.3 goals per game. Including a 6 goal breakdown against Calgary (if you include the shootout goal), the Wings are averaging 2.5 goals against per game. That's a pretty comfortable margin.

Even though they lost tonight it appears the Wings managed to grab an extra point on San Jose. At least they're chipping away at the lead that the two games in hand could potentially be.

For how much grief that seems to follow your posts as well as our tendency (not unlike many other forums) to play homer, I'm really glad you're sticking around through it all, because its nice to be able to get a perspective of the conference from your end of things.
