    Franzen or Hossa?

Franzen is definitely not going to earn as much as Hossa, home team discount or not. So what I think would be a good way of looking at this would be Franzen + Hudler or Hossa + Sammuelson. Ideally (which is entirely possible), Holland will try to lock up Hudler for a long term contract that increases for about 4 or 5 years. That way Holland can lowball him for next year, but it would balance out in the longrun. I'm confident in his development to take that risk personally, and I'm scared that another team will throw a high $$ contract at him. He's more valuable than Penner was IMO, so whatever Holland can do with him before free agency I think would be best. Anyway, back to my original point, if we can squeeze Hossa and Hudler under the cap, then I'd pick that 10 times out of ten. But if its Franzen and Hudler vs Hossa and Sammy, I'm going with Franzen and Hudler.

    Interesting stat...

I wouldn't mind seeing Osgood start 4 of 5 in a short period of time (ie a roadtrip), but if that plan is to come into reality, it needs to happen as soon as possible, because a month before the playoffs is a little too late to be getting your no. 1 in the groove, and on the very real possibility that we lose the majority of those, we still have time to make up for lost ground.

    Schnieder to return?

I was never a fan of Schnieder, as I always saw him as a player who was too willing to sacrifice the defensive position for a possible offensive opportunity. And I've seen this result in a goal against the Wings many times.

    Leino Sitting Out Tonights Game

Kopecky isn't a fighter. People saw him tango with Sharp just one time and all of a sudden the Wings have a fighter. He would get his ass kicked by anyone with any fighting experience and he knows it. That's why he doesn't fight.

    Schnieder to return?

We have Rafalski. Even on his off night I would take him over Schneider. Schneider was definitely an offensive powerhouse, but I remember him being somewhat retarded defensively. Especially for a defensman.
  14. Well that's good that his lead is so dominant over everyone else. I honestly expected it to be a lot closer this year, what with how much of an offseason it started off to be. Anyway I can't help but wonder if there is a certain stigma associated with not voting for Lidstrom as the best defensman.

Wings have a perfectly fine second line

They're all finesse players, and while there's nothing wrong with that, its a lot easier for a goalie to stop a shot he can see, rather than one he can't, and that's why guys like Homer and Franzen are all the more valuable. Who knows what kind of catalyst these guys act as to increase shooting % for folks like Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

    Leino Sitting Out Tonights Game

I'm 99% positive that I'm the only one who thinks this, but this year Kopecky has been our top grinder, and pretty much has done what should be expected of him as a fourth line getting-paid-next-to-nothing youngster.

why can't the NHL have a salary cap like baseball?

The MLB's salary cap prevents parity from occurring, which is what the league hopes will stimulate failing markets. The idea is, if there team has a better chance of making it to the playoffs, more people might be interested in paying attention to a more successful team. As long as Holland stays ahead of the curve I can't really complain with the cap. A lot of me thinks it is a good idea, but I would also like to see something implemented where drafted and developed players only count 50% towards the cap or something similar. This way the playing field is still evened, and it is also able to reward organizations for their investment in behind-the-scenes folks. This may also lead to a greater interest in minor league hockey (although doubtful).

Could Kenny go the Z route for Hossa?

The past week has really put a lot in perspective for me. It seems that having a good mix of old and young players works in more ways than just to balance out slow veteranship with fast inexperience. Signing prime players to long term contracts is good in the immediate future, but then you have a 6M cap hit when they're 37 years old. This is balanced with signing youth, whose contracts will get larger with every year instead of smaller, so in that last year they're getting paid 4-5M with only a 2M cap hit, which helps offset the veteran contract of a 6M cap hit.. Its all risky, but this further emphasizes the necessity of signing Hudler or Leino or some other young, high potential player to a multiyear increasing contract.

Carl Weathers (born January 14, 1948) is an American actor, as well as former professional football player in the United States and Canada. He is well known for playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky series of films, as well as his role as Dillon in the first Predator movie. Contents [hide] * 1 Biography o 1.1 Personal life o 1.2 Football career o 1.3 Acting career * 2 Filmography * 3 References * 4 External links [edit] Biography [edit] Personal life Weathers was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1] He graduated from St. Augustine High School and then went to San Diego State University. Outside of acting, he is a member of both Big Brothers and the United States Olympic Committee. In April 2007, he married Jennifer Peterson, a documentary filmmaker. [edit] Football career Carl played two years at Long Beach City College in 1966-1967 playing linebacker. At San Diego State University, Carl was a member of the football team. This led to a brief career as a linebacker with the Oakland Raiders, where he played 7 games in 1970 and one game in 1971. He joined the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League in 1971 and played until 1973, 18 games in total. He retired in 1974 to become an actor. In his football career, he played for hall-of-fame coaches Don Coryell at San Diego State and John Madden with the Oakland Raiders. [edit] Acting career Weathers had his first parts in two Arthur Marks directed 1970s blaxploitation films: Bucktown and Friday Foster, both in 1975. Weathers also appeared in an episode on the 70's sitcom Good Times as an angry husband who suspected his wife of cheating on him with J.J. Ironically, though his character was presumably supposed to be older, Carl is actually one year younger than Jimmie Walker. He noted that this was not the first time he worked with Arthur Marks; they had known each other since they were young. In 1976, he starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in Rocky as Apollo Creed, a role he would reprise in the next three Rocky films in 1979, 1982, and 1985. For the most recent film in the Rocky series, Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone asked Weathers, Mr. T, and Dolph Lundgren for permission to use footage from their appearances in the earlier Rocky movies. Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren acquiesced, but Weathers wanted an actual part in the movie, even though his character died in Rocky IV. Stallone refused and Weathers decided not to allow Stallone to use his image for Rocky flashbacks from the previous movies. They instead used new footage of a fighter who looks similar to Weathers.[2] In 1978, Carl portrayed misogynist Vince Sullivan in the TV movie, Not This Time. Weathers also starred in a number of action films for the small and big screen, including: Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Predator (1987), Action Jackson (1988), and Hurricane Smith (1992), and is briefly seen as an Army MP in one of the three released versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As a member of the cast of Predator, Weathers worked with future California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and future Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura. Many years later he appeared in a spoof segment on Saturday Night Live, announcing that he was running for political office and urging viewers to vote for him on the basis that "he was the black guy in Predator". He also appeared in Michael Jackson's "Liberian Girl" music video, and played Chubbs in Happy Gilmore, teaching Happy how to play golf. During the final season of In the Heat of the Night, his character of Hampton Forbes replaced Bill Gillespie at the chief of the Sparta, Mississippi police. He continued that role in the television movies based on the series. Another noted TV role was on the cop show Street Justice where he played Sgt. Adam Beaudreaux. He also played as MACV-SOG Colonel Brewster in the CBS series Tour of Duty. In 2004, Weathers received a career revival as a comedic actor beginning with appearances in 3 episodes of the comedy series Arrested Development as a cheapskate caricature of himself, who serves as Tobias Fünke's acting coach. He was then cast in the comedies The Sasquatch Gang and The Comebacks. Weathers had a guest role in two episodes of The Shield as the former training officer of main character Vic Mackey. Weathers provided the voice for Colonel Samuel Garret in the Pandemic Studios video game, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.[3] In 2005, he was a narrator on Conquest! The Price Of Victory - Witness The Journey of the Trojans!, an 18-part television show about USC athletics. Weathers is a principal of Red Tight Media, a film and video production company that specializes in tactical training films made for the United States armed forces.[citation needed] He also appeared in one episode of ER as the father of an injured boxer during their 2008 finale season. He is currently acting as "Brian "Gebo" Fitzgerald" in advertising for Old Spice's sponsorship of NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. He also appears in an ongoing series of web-only advertisements for Credit Union of Washington, dispensing flowers and the advice that "change is beautiful" to puzzled-looking bystanders.

Osgood proves he doesn't deserve No. 1 spot

So if its not Osgood's fault that Osgood's goals against is almost at 3.5 per game (42nd in nhl, and by the way, theres only 30 teams), and Osgood's save percentage is at .880 (44th in nhl), then who's is it? The defense? Because Conklin plays with the same team, and he's 12th in the league in save percentage, and 7th in the league with goals against. Thats a huge statistically significant difference. Heck, Conklin has 5 shutouts already. Osgood's still looking for number one. But those are just numbers, right? Yeah, the defense hasn't been up to Detroit standards. If you can't see that, you're watching the wrong end of the ice. But its not preventing Conklin from controlling his rebounds and playing sound positional hockey. Just watch him. He's playing smart goaltending. Osgood looks lost out there. Well, maybe the defense is a little more shaky with Osgood in net, so they don't play as well. I have to be honest. This is one of the worst arguments for the defense of a goaltender I have ever heard. First of all, if this is actually the case, thats further argument to NOT play the goalie. When he's in net, the goalie is bad, the defense is bad. Lets just sit him and solve BOTH problems. Secondly, if I was playing in front of mr. 3.5 GAA, .880%, I would be nervous too. I have no idea how fast I'm going to need to be on another uncontrolled rebound, and I have no idea where the thing is bouncing. I'm going to need to be right ontop of the shooter, and right besides Osgood at the same time, because if I'm not on the shooter, then its my fault that he had a clean shot into the net to score on. If I'm not next to Osgood, then its my fault again that I wasn't there to clear out that juicy rebound. Yes, I'm going to be playing very nervous. But I'm not an nhl player. I've gone as far as midget-B, and currently play IM at college. Which brings me to my next point: its the nhl. And its the Red Wings. From all the playoff games and come-from-behind victories and experience playing with Dom (the most unpredictable goalie ever), and other high pressure situations, I have little doubt that they can handle the pressures of having an incompetent goalie behind them, and "nervousness" isn't going to affect their game all that much. Now in light of all of this, Osgood has proven in the past that he can lead this team. So I'm not saying that he shouldn't play in the playoffs, or we should dump him just yet. What I am saying is that the season is already past half way over, and he's running out of chances to turn it back on. Which scares me, because I don't think Conklin has the playoff experience to take us deep. But as of right now, he's currently our best option.

    Value of Wings

One of the biggest problems with rating players by skill, is the vast amount of intangibles that comes with how people view a player. There's offensive production, defensive skill, passing, shooting, checking, fighting, position, blocked shots, penalty killing, power play, etc etc etc, and everything is also relative to what role the player is in. Its difficult to compare people of two different skill levels, who's roles are two completely different thing (goal scorer vs penalty killer vs faceoff winner vs whatever) So instead of focusing on doing things that way, and in light of the Wings' predicament of who stays and who goes, I want to know how everyone would rate the Wings based on their value. Essentially how much do you think they bring to to the team over how much of a (potential) hit against the cap they make. I'm aware that there may be a certain stigma against not rating Zetterberg or Lidstrom first, but seriously give me your honest answers. I really have no idea how I would personally rate everyone, and I think it could be a good idea to determine who is likely to be on the trading block, or not brought back next year, should the Wings need to make room.
