I'm planning on going to the Wings vs Blackhawks game on January 8th/9th somewhere around then Anyway its in Chicago and I was planning on wearing my Lids jersey. Are hawks fans assholes?
-
That is definitely my hope, but only time will tell

The thing is that we have a salary cap now, and the more years we continue under a cap, the more "balanced" all the teams are. The Wings have money to buy as many good players as the nhl will let us, so we'll always have a chance at the playoffs so long as there is a salary cap. I would be more concerned with Illitch selling the team to someone, or Ken Holland retiring and not having someone as capable fill his shoes.

I like to think of it as winning 3 cups in 6 years, and everything else is pointless to keep track of

I have to admit the commercial timeout really pisses me off also, because it kills the whole point of the no-change icing, but there really isn't too much that can be done. At the very least its affective in overtime. Another rule that I don't like is the trapezoid "play zone" for goalies. I really don't think that benefits the game at all. If anything it slows it down when the puck is cleared into that area on a power play, and unnecessary and ridiculous penalties to suffer from are annoying to watch, especially with Hasek needing to leave the crease as much as he does.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/rumors/post/NH...F?urn=nhl,53248 This is the first semi-official report that I've actually heard of them making the nets larger, or bowing the posts and crossbars out. Im still against it

I would stop watching if there was an illegal defense rule, and I definitely agree that the pads that Patrick Roy used (and those of the era) were way too big. If only it were legal to interfere with defensman if it means clearing the path for a shot. That would create some kinda hell though

A masochist is someone who takes pleasure in pain, and is usually used in a sexual context.

Pactrick Roy hasn't played since the nhl shortened pad sizes. Heres a quote of some pics i found comparing today's pads with pads from two decades ago The only thing that looks bigger today is the chest protector, and there may be an argument for the pants, but none of the pics have good angles. And even if we do shrink the pads down even further, teams are only going to adapt and put more players in front of the net to prevent shots from getting through. Look at the Blues last night. The last minute of play and they have all five of their players between the net and the hashmarks blocking shots. I really think the problem lies in defensives strategies moreso than goalie pads and net sizes.

Hudler NEEDS to practice one-timers. I can clearly remember him having 3 perfect, wide-open nets if he shot the puck as soon as his stick touched it, but he takes too much time settling the pass

I dont like it, and its not that I don't like the competition, but it belittles significant rivalries that build up over multiple years, becasue everyone is almost exactly as good as everyone else. There are no dynasties, no team to love to hate for consecutive years. But this is the result of the salary cap, which I also believe is responsible for lower scoring games (someone else said it, but it makes sense because teams are more diluted)

His screams are that of competition, not fear

I posted in a recent thread a series of pictures from goalies today vs goalies in the late 80s, and aside from Giguere, all the pads were clearly smaller in today's era. Scratch that, all the pads beside the chest protector are smaller. I will give you the fact that today's pads are more mobile I don't determine the quality of play based solely on how many goals are scored in a game. If its a fast paced game with lots of shots and scrambles and scrums and whatnot, then its a game that I'm going to enjoy.

I personally don't think that games are suffering from "lower scoring", however I do think a big catalyst for this is the amount of talent actually on a team. There have been a number of expansions since the "scoring days", and the all star players are being spread out over more teams. Sure many teams still have a solid first line, but the second and third lines are weaker. I also don't think that making goalie pads smaller, or nets wider is going to make much of a difference. Teams will adapt and instead of having two defensmen within a five foot radius of the goalie, they'll add a center in there as well to make up for the extra space to cover. edit: I also think that goalie pads, aside from the chest protector are actually smaller than what they were in the 80s.

2-1 Holmstrom from Z and Lids Karya from a couple guys Lidstrom from Homer and Z Legace faces 80 shots on net Homer gets 8 penalty minutes my fantasy team has nothing to do with this prediction nothing

How is this degrading to Native Americans at all??? Last time I checked team names and/or logos are created to be intimidating and are selected for their traits in strength, agility, speed, and various other manly, intimidating features. If anything, having Native Americans represent a team is a compliment.

White or light colors are associated with protagonism, whereas darker colors are often associated with antagonism. White should be the home jerseys because the home team is the protagonist of the building, and dark colors should be on away jerseys because they are the antagonist to the city/building they're playing in.

this is a great poll

Since the nhl started looking at pad sizes, I think they're quite small, aside from the chest protector. Goalies from the 80s/early90s Ron Hextall http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/Legend...9/000305246.jpg Grant Fuhr http://www.sharkspage.com/jpgs2/Fuhr_Oilers_57.jpg Mike Vernon http://cdn.nhl.com/photos/v/vernon1990_flames_tall.jpg vs Today Henrik Lundqvist http://www.freewebs.com/sahl/05LundqvistHenrik06.jpg Dominic Hasek http://www-personal.umich.edu/~swarheit/Dom1.jpg and worst of all Giguere, who I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on when looking at the chest protector. http://sharkspage.com/jpgs3/giguere2.jpg I really think the "low scoring games" is a result of adaptive defense. Teams have learned if you never get scored on, you can't loose, no matter how bad you're offense is.

All this really makes me wonder what would've happened if Moore actually stood up and fought Bertuzzi the 200 times he confronted him.

Theres still plenty of scoring in the nhl. Last night there were 38 goals scored in 8 games, for an average of 4.75 goals per game. Thats about the equivalent of a 3-2 game, which is quite a normal pace for scoring. Factor in the fact that there were 5 shutouts also, and you get the average for each team that scored last night at about three and a half goals. And last night was by no means the norms for nhl, whether you're talking about today's nhl or the game played in the 80s or 20s. By increasing the width of the rink you open up more space, which ultimately spreads the defense out more to cover more ground. Shooting lanes will get wider, and it will be easier to skate around defensmen because there will be more open space to move around in.

Yahoo widgets has had one for a while, and its compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. Although I personally prefer just having yahoo sports open and getting play by play updates and lists of who scored, assists, penalties, etc
