I don't think Smith would be solid on the PP because from a defensman's point of view, one of the biggests skills you need to have is to be able to reliably get your shot through from the point. Smith's offensive ability isn't due to his bombs from the blue line, but rather from jumping in on the play during a breakdown in coverage (which doesn't happen when teams are penalty killing and thinking positional hockey above all else). I don't have anything against the guy, but I don't think he'd be a big difference maker on the man advantage. Getting mentored

I forgot they named it after Matt Wuest. Anyway is this available to watch in any capacity?

Which coach ran the powerplay? The one that stayed or the one that left?
-
Seems the criteria often requires a coach to have immediate success with a new team. If Blash gets the Wings to the top of the standings I wouldn't be surprised if he wins. Then again, if Babcock gets Toronto into the playoffs it'll be hard for anyone to overcome that hype train. The real reason i made this thread was for number9 to post this

Putin and russian all stars beat children...seriously.

My first thought too -
Another way to look at this would be that we would have a number 1 goalie only making 600k or whatever it is. Either way we have less than 6M tied up in both our goalies, and that number doesn't change regardless of who is number 1 and who is backup.

That's why the majority of us are vouching for a 50/50 split. Mrazek gets ample opportunity to prove whatever success he had last year wasn't a fluke (and to iron out his inconsistency), and Howard has an opportunity to try and get back to his pre-injury form. And on the event that one of them falters, we still have the other one to rely upon. It makes so much sense that it's really baffling that this thread has made it more than one page deep.
-
You mean Mrazek will get the praise he deserves only after he earns it? Seems fair to me.
-
Everyone seems to only remember the shutouts that Mrazek got, and completely forget the very next game when he was consistently pulled. Mrazek had one good playoff series and a very inconsistent regular season, and that's not enough to give him the number 1 job and get rid of the insurance.

Wings hire Bryan Campbell as Director of Statistical Analysis

What's this guy's background? Does he have a master's in stats or is this a hockey gut who's familiar with what corsi means? -
Worth it just for that. In fact number9 is actually Kenny Holland trolling everyone.

Precious nectar of the gods -
This reminds me of something funny I read: If I have a daughter I'm going to name her lizard, and then she'll get the nickname Liz. And everyone will ask her "oh is that short for Elizabeth?" And she'll have to say "no my name is lizard."

I'm guessing the bolded has something to do with it. Considering he was signed almost immediately after he became a free agent, I'm assuming he either wanted to come to Detroit and wasn't considering much else, or Detroit was the only team who came calling.
-
This confuses me. Where does Russo fit on the Wings' depth chart? We have Marchenko, Oulette, Sproul all knocking on the door, plus Kronwall, Ericsson, Green, Dekeyser, Smith, Kindl, and Quincey. I would have imagined he would sign somewhere where he's more likely to play given that he lost his job with the Islanders due to depth.

Pssh Glendening Schmlendening. Cleary goes down faster than anyone.

Is the criteria that we had to have hated these players first? Cuz I've always loved Kopitar. Maybe Crosby. I used to absolutely loathe him but since he's cut the whining and entitlement issues down considerably, and continues to play at a phenomenal level I've really grown to respect him. I don't know if I "like" him, but I certainly don't hate him anymore.

you and number9 and destroyed the quality of my posts. i don't even know who i am anymore. All I think about are Hampus Melen and Mexican Waterbugs

Edit nm Lol

He seems to be more like Toews on the ice, but what do I know ive barely seen him play.

Tatar doesn't realize how small he is either
-
A lot of folks were quick to ignore Mrazek's inconsistency from game to game last year as well. One game he would post a shutout, then follow it up with getting pulled. Those kind of growing pains are expected in a rookie goalie which is fine, but it's not a characteristic you want to see in a number 1. The only problem was Jimmy wasn't any better in that second half of the season.Anyway I agree with your assessment that the job is up from grabs right now, and I could easily see either goalie walking away with it. Both are quite talented and capable goalies when they're in the zone (see: Howard's first half of the season, Mrazek in the playoffs). I can also see Blashill giving them each 41.

I think Gus has more talent to work with than Tatar, but I think Tatar makes up for that with how hard he plays every shift, and how involved he gets.
