    We're Down One Goose

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2014/09/red_wings_gustav_nyquist_knee.html Sounds like it wasn't malicious. Just an unfortunate result of the play. Nyquist says he won't miss any of the regular season though, for what that's worth

This is a good post. Way to put things into perspective.

According to mlive, Callahan laid a big hit on Chara in the first period. Any video evidence, or can anyone from the game confirm?

NHL Gamecenter Live **No illegal stream discussion**

I have a question that perhaps you guys could help out with. I recently moved in with my girlfriend and we decided not to get cable/satellite, simply because I'm too busy with school and she's too busy with work to make the purchase worth it. I'm still interested in watching Red Wings games, but I understand that having NHL Game Center only allows you to watch games that are outside of your market area. Seeing as how I'm about 20 minutes north of Joe Louis, I suspect that Game Center won't allow me to watch Red Wings games unless I work through a proxy, which i would rather not deal with. Do I have any (legal) alternatives?

    Seriously? Where'd you hear this?
  6. I don't think anyone believes that toughness and a strong physical presence isn't a good thing to have on a team. The issue pops up with how different folks define what toughness is. I personally find value in players who are strong in the corners and can protect the puck well, and retrieve loose pucks amidst slashes and cross checks and the like. I find value in players who can effectively drive the net and hold their ground there. I find value in players who can physically wear down on the opposition, through hard hits, relentlessness, good speed and pressure. I don't find much value (other than for entertainment and personal sadistic gain) in players fighting other players for hits or past issues, legal or otherwise. I don't think it deters anything (in fact I think it potentiates the issue, as Kip alluded to), and just slows the game down. But that's my personal stance on the issue. Obviously there are plenty of folks who think that Downey's presence on the roster gave the team the courage to win the game, or Drake's willingness to fight kept the opposition honest, whatever that means. I just don't buy that aspect of it.
  7. He was a difference maker in the prospects tourney, which is a bit surprising given his size and age. Hopefully this kid can keep turning heads and make a name for himself in the Wings' system.

I can see Kindl and Lashoff dropping in the depth chart for someone like Oulette, or if the Wings are desperate for some points from the back end, Sproul (although I think the former is more NHL ready). Smith makes some bonehead plays on the ice from time to time, but he's definitely a level above Kindl and Lashoff, and has a higher ceiling than either as well.

The game as a whole is pretty sloppy, so its tough to gauge exactly what kind of player he can be just yet, but he definitely is skating better than anytime last year. He's moving well, getting open, rushing to pucks, that sort of thing.

Real fans don't care about the opinions of swedes like Federov. I get my info from good ol' Canadian boys like Mike-y Redman and Don Cherrios.

I know its still early (and preseason) but Weiss has a hop to his step that I never saw last year.

    9/22/14 7:00 PM. Preseason GDT - DET 2 @ PIT 1

Backman has looked real solid for the most part. Much more poised than I was expecting. Sproul had a nice PP shift in the first where he essentially took the quarterback role onto his own shoulders and was doing a good job distributing the puck and finding open lanes to shoot. He got crushed joining the rush by Bortuzzo in the second, but he's back on the ice so looks like nothing serious. Helm Datsyuk Tatar line has looked pretty good. Tatar and Datsyuk have some pretty solid chemistry so far tonight. Cleary hasn't looked bad, but I haven't really noticed him much. Our defense looked pretty shaky at first, but it looks like they've settled down a bit. Kronwall looks like he's playing lazy. Anithisou (sp?) and Frk haven't really stood out.

Sproul looked pretty impressive on the powerplay early on, but I have to say Backman has been the best looking defensman out there for the Wings tonight.

Hard to tell, he hasn't really had much opportunity to show us anything yet. At the very least I haven't seen him fall.

Datsyuk was the player victimized, yes, but Tatar's stretch pass to Helm, and Helm subsequently driving to the net, then wrapping around behind the net causing Fleury to go out of position set the play up, and was the true draw of the penalty.

Someone in the comments section in the link Dirtydangles posted noted that Weiss has looked really good out there so far, despite the stats.
