Sometimes its tough to watch, like the tripping call in OT this afternoon for example, but my general philosophy is: if you're playing the game in such a way that the refs are able to influence the outcome in the final minute, then you're not playing hard enough in the first 59. If the Wings took care of business in their own zone today, the Wings would have been up by two or three goals to close the game out. As it happened, we didn't, and the invitation to hand the game to the Capitals, or the refs was thus handed out.

What's wrong with Pasha? (Mod warning post #57)
Echolalia replied to matthewdanna's topic in General
It would suck, but I would do the same thing in his position. Olympics are a big deal. Hosting them is an even bigger deal. Representing your country as Captain is monumental, and it may very well be the last chance he gets at fighting for gold. -
It's getting harder to remember who is up and who is in Grand Rapids. I thought Emmerton was in GR already

I'll be in for this one from start to finish, which is something I wish I could do more often!

Hey I used to play at Frasier through MSE, then moved to Mt Clemens! My team was the NADS. My friends are still playing but I decided to quit because I started school and wasn't sure I could juggle both.

We will never know for sure what Babs and Holland are thinking in not playing Tootoo, but I did notice that many of his hits came at the expense of losing his positioning; usually an offensive zone turnover where the Wings begin to transition into defensive hockey. Tootoo would step up and go for a hit instead of fall back and clog up center or take away a passing lane. I've wondered whether that was against Babcock's strategy, and Babs would rather play the situation by trying to get the puck back through a center ice turnover, or a retrieval off a dump in. As you guys have mentioned, Babs and Holland wanted Tootoo here, and he's done just about everything we've expected him to. The only thing I can think of is that he cant (or won't) fit into the type of team hockey that the coaching staff have been establishing for the squad this year.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?
Echolalia replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
If the Wings could get a 1st round pick out of the trade deadline, and trade up to a top 10 pick in next year's draft (two firsts for a top 10), I wouldn't be against it. I think it could be a pretty modest way to get a solid player who could potentially be a franchise type of guy, especially considering the going-rate of 1st round picks in previous seasons' trade deadlines. -
Franzen likely rushed to hopefully see if he could play in the Olympics. Understandable, but stupid if that's actually the case. Anyway, I guess Jurco or Sheahan will be up with the big club a bit longer now

The Wings have an excess of forwards right now and the top priorities IMO are a top 3 defenseman, and/or a franchise-type young scoring winger. I think the first is more likely given we have 30 forwards signed to the team right now (and teams typically don't trade franchise goal scorers), so I imagine any scouting or trade possibilities will revolve around a defensman coming this way, and forward(s) being traded from our side. Probably not Cleary, Bertuzzi, or Sammuelson because the rest of the league in all likelihood sees them the same way we do. I don't see Holland moving Datsyuk, Zettetberg, Franzen, Alfredson, Helm, or Weiss, because it wouldn't fit his style. Abdelkader, Nyqvist, Tatar, Jurco, Glendening, Anderson, Miller, Sheahan, Eaves I think are all fair game as far as forwards go. The only way to really make it work though is for some team to eat some cap space for us too, and somehow take some salary back their way. At the same time, scouts checking out other players hardly means a trade is imminent. Holland has no problem sitting on his hands if he doesn't see something he likes, as we all know.

This is an awesome thread concept

Dude General Tso's Chicken isn't going to move Destiny's Child, especially cuz Suit n Tie McFly has such a hard-on for him.
-
This is what I'm worried about. Both Jurco and Sheahan have played far better than I expected they would, and they've been difference makers in just about every game they've played. Furthermore, that line with them and Tatar has been consistently putting pucks into the net. In the playoffs last year our first two lines did what they had to do, but it was the depth at our third line which put us over the top and got us past the Ducks and to game 7 against Chicago. We need to get back to that.

Every time I watch the Wings they lose I caught the last few minutes of the win over the Kings a week or so ago, but before that the last win I actually got to watch from start to finish was from the beginning of December...

I still want to see a Nyqvist Helm Tatar line

GDT 1/18 GDT: Kings 2 @ Red Wings 3 (Shootout)
Echolalia replied to MabusIncarnate's topic in General
I'm not watching the game. How was the tie goal scored? -
Did you use a bold font in addition to the size increase? Because bold predictions require a bold font.

Awesome work by Glendening! Rubbing a little grease in goal!

I want to be clear that I'm not projecting him to be a top 6 forward who knows how to fight and play hard ala Lucic. But to have a bottom six guy who has a scoring touch could be quite invaluable to this team. Babs and Holland preach responsible and productive hockey above all else. Callahan may be able to contribute where it matters most, while at the same time playing a greasy style game, which as LGW points out every 45 minutes, we lack.I don't think we have a reliable player who can score dirty goals in front of the net. Cleary used to be that guy. Abby is sorta there, but he keeps switching lines and his role has changes accordingly. Helm when he's healthy. Callahan may be able to fit that role, but also specialize in it. That could be dangerous.
-
I didn't know much about this kid, and after doing some reading, it seems like he was pegged as a 4th line agitator who does his best work in the greasy areas. If he has somehow developed a scoring touch, Callahan is going to be dangerous.

He took on Toews, Perry, and Nash in a span of like a week

<- American. Last Olympics was Babcock's and more importantly Yzerman's first time managing the Canadian roster. A huge part of me wanted them to get gold, especially with the added pressure of Canada hosting the games. A slightly bigger part of me was rooting for USA though, and it was painful that that meant rooting for Yzerman to fail as a first-time GM.

I'm looking forward to Inglorious Backes picking fights with all the Canadian players leading up to the Olympics

I heard Team Canada is a bunch of hosers

Kyle Quincey/Brendan Smith or Ian White/Carlo Colaiacovo
Echolalia replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Well a lot of goals are scored when Quincey is on the ice -
