I wonder if he'll conveniently end up on LTIR around the time Ericsson returns

It's impressive to see Ovechkin only 30 points behind Dats, with 180 less games, especially because the past few seasons people started labeling Ovy as a floater.

The ones who go on to have NHL careers, typically. Some of the top scorers fizzle out in the AHL, and some of those that make it to the NHL fizzle out there. What's promising about this kid is how immensely he seems to be tearing it up. As of right now, he has 43 points (20g, 23a) in 17 games. The guy who is second place in the league is at 33 points in 20 games. As Crymson mentioned earlier "#1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon had 75 points in 44 games last season in the Q, and #3 Drouin had 103 points in 50 games. Mantha is on pace for 126 points if he plays 50 games." It definitely doesn't guarantee that he is going to be a star at the NHL level or even succeed as a third liner. That has yet to be seen. But what it does show is that at the very least, Mantha has the potential to really be a difference maker for the Red Wings. And besides, when you're a Wings fan who hasn't seen a top 10 pick in 100 years, these kind of players are all we have to get excited about.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nhl--beach-bum-s-lucky-break--how-chris-chelios--hall-of-fame-career-almost-never-happened-at-all-223053286.html This was an excellent read and I had no idea that his path to the NHL was what it was. On a particular note, the article made a point to talk about Cheli's commitment to staying in shape, mentioning how he would sometimes ride his bike to the Joe from his place in Bloomfield Hills, and the stuff about his cardio workouts in a sauna. Everyone makes a big deal about Howe lasting until 52 (which is definitely a huge deal, don't get me wrong), but I wonder whether in today's NHL, whether lasting until 48 is an equally impressive feat. The four year gap is a big one, especially when you're talking about those years around 50. But at the same time, it takes serious commitment to succeed after 40, especially on defense, and we've all heard stories about how Cheli's workout regime would make other, younger NHLers keel over and vomit. Anyway, its a good read. extra credit: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nhl--chris-chelios-q-a--on-whether-he-could-still-play-at-51--his-post-nhl-life---what-future-holds-233740518.html

It was extra credit pal, no worries. excerpt (when asked about his qualifications as a potential coach): What can you add that others can’t? “[Wings defenseman] Brendan Smith, for example, I know exactly what he’s going through, his struggles. Twenty years ago, Smitty has no problem playing in the league. He’s got all the skill and vision. But now he’s trying to fit into the system. That’s one of the issues that Smitty’s having. People will look and say, ‘What’s he doing?’ I see what he’s thinking. “Hockey’s way better now. The systems, you don’t see ‘D’ taking it end to end like you used to. It’s just not going to happen. That’s what I think my value is. I can talk to the kids. I still stay within the systems, but I can help with little things until they make it. Once they get their confidence and hopefully the opportunity to be in that role – power play and penalty kill – then they’ll get that leash. You’ve got to get there first.”

I'm a bit confused on the roster limit thing. If Tootoo is claimed, wouldn't that open up one spot on our roster, which Nyqvist could then fill? Or are we somehow already over the roster limit as is and we need to move two bodies to bring up one? I feel like I've been pretty good at understanding the whole salary cap and CBA stuff and how it pertains to a roster, but frankly this year has me baffled.

It was interesting to read his view of Smith. There are many hockey players who don't have what it takes to be in a managerial position, but Chelios is one guy that I could see excelling in a coaching role.

I'd like to see where you read/heard this, if possible.

Who is this move making room for?

EDIT: I R GUD AT TEKNOLOGEE
-
Not to take anything away from Ozzie and Murph, but it really makes me appreciate how difficult commentating can be, and how phenomenal Mickey Redmond is at his position.

Does anyone actually vote for the player of the game? One night we need to organize the LGW crew to vote for some random player who would never actually get voted for, and see how many votes FSD actually gets. Someone like Cleary.

Helm just went to the bench mid shift in the offensive zone...
-
uhhh have you seen this guy's table tennis serve? He's playing phenomenally! edit: oh we're talking hockey..
-
Isnt' Rexall place one of those arenas where the visiting lockerroom isn't behind the visiting bench?
-
Sammy speaks Swenglish???? I thought it was just Homer!
-
I'll be watching this one at 0.5x speed. You know, so I can follow Helm.

Autobiographical masturbation? Wait til Joe Thornton comes out with his book.
-
I wish I had time to read all these books! I also didn't know McCarty wrote a book.
-
What a joke. Flyers get embarrassed on the ice, try to goon it up, and now they're down two players.
-
I can't believe how far they've fallen from last season. Its unbelievable.
-
Coming next, a special on why Franzen is worth every penny of his contract
-
Weiss is looking good out there. Or maybe its everyone else is playing terribly... I can't tell.
-
Bring back Murph!

I would like them a ton if they didn't have the C on them.
