He retired due to complications over a shoulder injury, though there is talk that he might be back next year.

On January 18, 2006 Penguins GM Craig Patrick told reporters that Pálffy told him he was retiring due to a lingering shoulder injury. Pálffy completed his career with 329 goals and 384 assists in 684 games in 12 NHL seasons.

Zigmund Palffy-W- Penguins Jan. 18 - 12:28 pm et

Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Ziggy Palffy has retired.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins winger announced his retirement, effective immediately, due to personal reasons. "I have agreed on all matters related to my retirement with the Pittsburgh management," Palffy told a newspaper in his native Slovakia. "There is no point in suffering any longer." Palffy, 33, first injured his right shoulder in January 2004 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Kings. He twice had reconstructive surgery, but problems persisted. "I have talked to my doctor and he did not recommend a third operation," Palffy told the newspaper. Palffy had previously retired from the Slovak national team ahead of next month's Turin Olympics. Palffy owners will not be pleased with this decision as he still had 42 points in 42 games this season.

He played 42 games last season and retired prematurely because of an injury that I can't specifically remember right now.

EDIT: I'm slow.

hahaha. It's ok, it's the thought that counts or so they say. ;)

Ziggy was awesome. I don't remember him all that well.... and with a shoulder that hasn't gotten better with two surgeries, I don't expect him coming back. Or anywhere near his playing capacity when he was fine.

I'd say that Slovak media thing is nothing more than catching a whiff of nothing.

The other day I was wondering what had happened to Espen Knutsen? I remember the whole incident where he shot the puck into the crowd and it hit a little girl that died from it and it seems ever since then he hasn't been around.

The other day I was wondering what had happened to Espen Knutsen? I remember the whole incident where he shot the puck into the crowd and it hit a little girl that died from it and it seems ever since then he hasn't been around.

Knutsen got a second chance in the NHL in 2000, when he was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets on the recommendation of assistant coach George Kingston, who had previously coached the Norwegian national team. In a very good first season, Knutsen tallied 53 points (11 goals, 42 assists) in 66 games. His numbers dropped a little the next season, but was nonetheless named in the World team (as an injury replacement) in the 2002 All-Star Game. The 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons were disappointing for Knutsen, who spent large parts of the seasons on the injured list. He left the NHL in early 2005, shortly after being assigned to Columbus' AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, and once again returned to Djurgården.

Although widely considered one of the best Norwegian ice hockey players of all time, the lasting legacy of Knutsen's NHL career might unfortunately be his involvement in an 2002 accident in which a puck he shot was deflected by Calgary Flames defenseman Derek Morris and sailed into the stands at Nationwide Arena, striking 13-year old Brittanie Cecil in the head, resulting in her death. Knutsen would later help set up a charity in Columbus to honor Brittanie's memory. Also as a result of the tragedy, protective nylon mesh nets above the glass behind both goals were made mandatory at every NHL arena from the start of the 2002-03 season.

Knutsen retired due to injury in July 2005. At the news of his retirement, the director of Djurgården called him one of the greatest players in the history of the club. After his retirement, Knutsen moved back to his native Oslo, where he lives with his family. He is currently head coach at Vålerenga, the team where he started his career.

There ya go. :P

I remember Knutsen. I always thought he was an excellent playmaking centerman. He was never really the same after the puck incident though. Injuries caught up to him too, as he hurt his shoulder, I think, during the lockout.
