Hank 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2007 Maybe Mack can clarify this but one of my die-hard Leaf buddies claims that Maurice has been trying McCabe as a forward on a few occassions in training camp. Rumour has it it's because of how brutal he is in his own zone. This is the first time I've heard anything of this nature. Has anyone else? I guess this wouldn't be mind blowing as both Gary Leeman and Wendel Clark were two former Leafs that were drafted as dmen only to be moved up front. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 1, 2007 I haven't heard anything like this, but to be honest, I haven't been that close to Leaf news lately (just on and off). I really don't see that working all that well. McCabe's biggest (only?) asset is his big shot from the point (great on powerplays). He's very similar to Souray. I don't think he is the greatest skater, so he won't be flying up and down the ice on the wing, which is much more important now than it was 5 years ago. The only thing I heard, while more an idea than a rumour, is that the Leafs could send him down to the minors and get some cap relief. This is one thing a rich team could do to get an advantage. McCabe has a no-movement clause which prevents him from being put on waivers. Kubina is the guy they will try to move for cap relief. The only thing that might give this some merit is that the Leafs are carrying 8 defencemen to start the season as Staffan Kronwall & Anton Stralman both made the team out of camp, but McCabe practiced in a pairing with Ian White today. Interesting, I didn't realize he had a no-movement clause, thought it was just a no-trade. You would have thought that those discussing the possibility would have known this....but obviously they were just throwing the idea out there. This makes his contract even more stupid on Mr. Ferguson's part. Not only did he throw way too much money his way (pretty much negating any possibilities of trade even without a clause), he throws in a no-movement clause. However, he didn't want to appear as the bad guy, so he entered into negotiations and made outrageous demands, with the idea that the Leafs will break off negotiations. Once he realized that the Leafs were going to give in on all those demands, he realized that he wasn't going to get a better deal anywhere else, so he signed.
