Doggy 130 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 The Ducks still won't be as good as they were last season. And we're better.
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 The thing that makes me suspicious of a return is the fact that the Ducks dealt McDonald. You would think Burke would've dumped salary in another way if he knew in the slightest that Selanne would be coming back. If you take Selanne's return into account, it makes the McDonald for Weight deal look that much more lopsided. The two of them were money together. Oh, and we'll take Markov back now. Thanks. Will he sign for the minimum? The Ducks still won't be as good as they were last season. And we're better. and hungrier !
chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 With him in the lineup, they're the best team in the league on paper, bar none. They already have the best defense in the league. Yeah, I know they've sucked this year, but no Wings fan in their right mind can tell me that you wouldn't be apprehensive about us facing them in the 1st round of the playoffs which might very well happen. I know championships aren't won on paper, but this team has already proven that it can win a Cup, so this isn't good news for the rest of the West. No, LAST YEARS team proved that they could win the cup as long as they get to play weak Vancouver and Minnesota teams and the Wings get hit with the loss of their #2 defenseman and they get a lucky bounce in Game 4. This years team hasn't even proved that they can make the playoffs. They have given up more goals than they scored. That is not a championship team. Can they go from a team that is out of the playoff to Stanley Cup contender in 42 games? That would be an increadible turn around. Possible but not probable even considering that they are getting back a HOF defenseman and a HOF forward at the end of his career. The difference? Even if they get Selanne back, the personnel have changed Gone - McDonald, Bryzgalov and Penner. Don't forget that Giggy missed the first 3 games of round 1 and Bryzgalov had to play. Replacements - Bertuzzi, Schneider and Weight They have swapped big, young players for old washed up players. Agreed that they are better with Selanne than without and I don't want to play them in the playoffs but I'm really not worried about it since they might not even be in the playoffs. The team that concerns me is the Sharks. If they ever get their heads together, they could be tough. But of course that's a big if. And of course, their coaching is abysmal. Its really amazing to me how quickly Red Wings fans forget the damage that lower seeded teams can do in the playoffs. It doesnt matter whether theyre the 2 seed or the 8 seed, the Ducks will be a legitimate contender no matter what. In hockey, all bets are off when the regular season ends. And as far the first part of your post...talk about excuses man. Yeah thats the same Vancouver and Minnesota team that people here were afraid to play. Hell even now Luongo still worries people. Only because the Ducks dispatched of them quickly did they became gift, weak opponents.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 And as for the lucky bounces, yep the 2 goals in game 1 that went off Anaheim skates were just all skill!
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 And as for the lucky bounces, yep the 2 goals in game 1 that went off Anaheim skates were just all skill! Exactly. It's crazy to me how people pick and choose exactly which lucky bounces were the ones that decided the series.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 6, 2008 The only team currently below the Ducks in their division that isn't fully capable of overtaking them with games in hand is Los Angeles. Their rank in the conference is skewed right now. Look at the standings. If every team below Anaheim in the standings - those capable of overtaking them with games in hand - does what they need to, Anaheim instantly drops to 13th in the conference, ahead of only Edmonton and Los Angeles. Even if only half of those teams (consisting of Colorado, St. Louis, Columbus, Phoenix, Nashville and Chicago) manage to overtake Anaheim, they still end in 10th - well out of the postseason. Even WITH Selanne, they certainly wouldn't be out of the woods.
Opie 308 Report post Posted January 7, 2008 I said all along that he was the main cog in that wheel, if he comes back that spells trouble and I begin to worry a lot about the ducks. There D is statistically insane, and their O has been dormant. You bring this guy back and he will facilitate that offense, he could single handedly turn this team around. If he does that is your MVP!!!
